The Wednesday Hodgepodge #25

I hope you are all having a good week? It's Wednesday which means it's time to join in with the Wednesday Hodgepodge with Joyce who blogs at From This Side of the Pond! Each week there are 6 questions, we answer and then link up. Simple!

Question marks on paper crafts

1. When someone finds out what you do or where you're from, what's a question they always ask?

People are always curious when they find out I live in England and ask if I live near London like it’s just around the corner. Funny thing is I’ve never even been to London! I’ve always lived up North and while London is only about 170 miles away from me it’s not exactly a quick hop to the capital. To get there by train, it's about 3 of them and several hours of travel.

Another classic question is Does it rain all the time there? Yes it rains a lot but not every single day like people seem to think. We do love to chat about the weather here in England though, it’s practically a national pastime.

2. Did you participate in 'Greek Life' when you were in college, or have children who did? If so what was your experience like? Taking another tack...have you ever been to Greece? If not, is that a destination on your bucket list?

I had to Google what "Greek Life" actually is! If I’m right it’s all about fraternities, sororities and the whole social scene around them? I’ve only ever seen it on TV shows and in movies. At university here in the UK there are groups and clubs but nothing on that scale. So no I didn’t participate although it does look like a lot of fun!

Greece is definitely on my bucket list! I actually have a friend who is Greek and she is an amazing cook! She even wrote a cookbook a few years ago full of Greek recipes. The country looks beautiful and the food sounds amazing.

3. Do you like Greek food? If so what's your favorite dish?

I’ve tried quite a few recipes from my friend’s cookbook and I have to say my favourite is Souvlaki, those little skewers of marinated meat served with warm pita, fresh salad and creamy tzatziki!

4. What incredibly common thing have you never done?

I have a list. lol I have never eaten a Big Mac, I was allergic to cheese so never even thought about eating them. I have never been abroad or flown in a plane, the appeal just isn't there for me. I would much rather stay close to home. I have been to Scotland and Wales so it's not like I haven't been to other countries. I have never watched Star Wars, of course I've seen clips and bits over the years but it just doesn't interest me. As much as I want a tattoo I've never got one and I've never used an Uber. They're not a big thing in the small town where I live.

5. What is a tell tale sign that you're upset?

It's not the most obvious when I’m upset. I tend to go quiet and retreat into myself. If I do have to talk it’s short, sharp and a little snappy. I vanish into my own little world and hope everyone gives me space until I’ve processed things.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My youngest went and did all the formalities for enrolling into her 3rd year in college yesterday, she got her timetable and it might be the most perfect one she's ever had! Last year she had a day where she'd start at 9am, had a lesson then had to hang around college for a few hours for another lesson in the afternoon. This time everything is all bunched together so she does one full day and two half days. She can do college, work and have a social life. I am so excited for her and now we can make plans for the rest of the year because lots of our plans depended on when Ellie was in college.

  1. It’s funny what people ask when they find out where you’re from. I usually get asked if we have massive spiders and insects everywhere — almost everyone I met in the U.S. asked me the same thing! I had a chuckle about the question of whether it rains every day — that’s something I would ask. I love Greek food as well, and now I’m going to pop over and check out your friend’s recipe book!

  2. That cookbook looks great! I will have to see if I can find it here. Congrats on the great college schedule! I hadn't Ubered until a few years ago and now I'm a pro. I have mostly only done it while traveling, not here at home.

  3. I definitely would be the one asking if you’d been to London. I think it’s more of an assumption when you live over that way. I’m also always very surprised when I learn that someone hasn’t flown in a plane by the time they are grown. It seems like a common way to travel these days.

  4. Americans in general will hop in the car and think nothing of driving for hours. Our UK friends thought we were crazy when we told them we drove ten hours to my in-laws several states away. I love a road trip : ) I'm glad things worked out so well with your daughter's schedule. It's nice to begin a new year feeling good about how things will run.

  5. I would definitely ask if it rains every day! I read many books set in England and the weather seems to be a theme- it's often portrayed as dark and gloomy. I think I would like England, hehe! How neat to have a friend publish a cookbook! I'll check that out. Congrats to Ellie and all of your for her good schedule!

  6. I enjoyed reading your answers! Do you want to visit London someday? I always thought it would be so nice to visit at Christmas. How wonderful that you've made some recipes from your friend's cookbook! I do love Greek food. Congrats to your daughter on her enrollment and schedule! I hope you've been having a great week, my friend.

  7. How cool that your friend has a cookbook! When people hear I live in Kansas, they might ask if I know Dorothy. The answer is no, she lives on the other side of the state.

  8. I enjoyed reading your answers! I have been to London 3 times. As much as I have enjoyed it, I have said that next time I come, I would like to travel some to the countryside. I have used Uber when I travel and now only fly somewhere maybe once a year, twice at the most. That is good to hear your daughter has a good school schedule. Have a good afternoon!

  10. My only experience with Greek life is from movies too! No tattoos here either and I've never tried a big mac either I just used an Uber for the first time ever when visiting Amy, Marilyn, Maria, Jenn, and Tanya in Louisville (I was a nervous wreck! LOL).

  11. I would have asked you if you had ever been to London. Here in America, I don't think twice about getting in a vehicle and driving a couple or more hours. I have never watched Star Wars and don't plan on it; not my cup of tea.

  12. When people learn that I've lived in England, they ask the does it rain all the time question! I had to think back if I'd taken an Uber - the answer is yes but Sophia arranged for it and was there with me, so I didn't have to take care of any of the details. That's great that Ellie has a good schedule. One semester I would drop Sophia at preschool at 8:00am and then have until almost 11:00am before my first class. I spent a lot of time killing time at the library.

  13. I like London, but now a days I rather go to York when I go to England. If I go back to London, it would be mostly for the museums. Travelling to Greece would be wonderful!

  14. I enjoyed reading all the things you've never done. :) London is such a sea of humanity. I'd much rather travel about Scotland and Wales and smaller cities and towns in England. How nice that your daughter got a good workable schedule this term. I like knowing schedules! I'll have to check out your friend's cookbook!

  15. You're absolutely not missing anything by not watching Star Wars. Haha. My whole family loves it so they made me watch them a while back and it was not good at all. Very boring. Although, I do think the Star Wars area at Disney World is cool!

  16. I've not watched Star Wars either!

  17. So funny about people asking if it rains all the time in England, that is definitely a stereotype in the US, I think. I admit I'm surprised you've never been to London, even though I didn't know where you lived in comparison. Believe it or not, people kind of assume the same about Canada sometimes - like we all have relative in Toronto. LOL
That's wonderful about your daughter's good schedule at college! Sounds like she will have a great year!
Hope you're having a lovely week!
