I started the week with no appointments at all and as the week has gone on we've had a few and have more planned...
Tuesday we received a letter from the Audiology department for a check up on Ellie. In case you didn't know she is deaf in one ear. I have blogged about it in the past. As she gradually lost the hearing they like to keep a eye on her good one...
If you have followed my blog for a while whenever we get an appointment at the hospital they always give us it for about 9am which is no good....It takes us over two hours to get there and longer in rush hour! There is no way I'm leaving the house at 7am for a half an hour appointment. I got straight on the phone and spoke to a lovely woman who said she would speak to the specialist and see when he wanted to see us....He told her a different day but the same time! She said stuff him and just made us a sensible timed appointment in the late afternoon and in the Easter holidays so there is no missing school....
Also on Tuesday I got a phone call from a woman from CYPS (Children and Young People's Service) who wanted to come and see Stu and I about Ellie's suspected Autism. She came and spoke to us for a good hour and a half and I never thought talking about your own child could be so draining.....Everything from my pregnancy with her and right up until now was discussed....There was a ton of questions and a lot of thinking on mine and Stu's part....
The woman said it doesn't look like Ellie has Autism....It does look like there are issues with school but because she doesn't show signs at home it doesn't seem like Autism. To her it seems Ellie's lack of concentration at school is down to her the deafness in one of her ears but she did agree that Ellie does need extra help in school....We are going to look into getting Ellie an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). At the end of the meeting I was left feeling frustrated. The CYPS woman was saying completely different things to what other people have told us....I have been back on the phone to the school nurse to deal with an issue that she said CYPS would deal with but they don't....It's not anything serious but as much as I blog about Ellie I do like to keep some things private....So another appointment will be coming up with her.
Last night we had parents evening....I was dreading it but it was really positive. Ellie did OK in her mock SATs. Way better than expected in some subjects but there was still places where she struggled which we expected. We will be getting extra work for her to do at home like spellings but we can make it fun so she will be more interested in learning...There is a learner support worker who comes in once a week to help Ellie with emotional development which will be sat with Ellie during her SATs to keep her working and writing....
We spoke to the head about getting a Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and that's fine and sensory support woman for her deafness back. They are willing to do anything to help Ellie. We mentioned about what the CYPS woman said and was really shocked that she formed an opinion about Ellie without even seeing or meeting her. The head is on a mission to get Ellie help and will be making phone calls tomorrow....
Ellie has a busy weekend. Next week it is the school performance of Beauty and the Beast where lots of schools come together and my girl is in the choir...Last weekends rehearsal on Sunday was cancelled due to the snow so they are having it today. It's going to be a long day for her but she loves the choir. Then tomorrow she is back again for more practice.

Busy busy busy but fun too - great the school are being so receptive
ReplyDeleteA busy week on the appointment front. It does seem strange that they made decisions without actually meeting Ellie, I do hope you get the support she needs x Thanks for sharing with #WotW
ReplyDeleteIt must be so frustrating trying to get the help that Ellie needs, I'm not sure how that lady made any sort of assessment without even meeting her. It's great that the school is determined to help though x
ReplyDeleteIt is great that the school are being so supportive and trying to help. Its a shame that the lady who did the assessment wasn't more help. It's so frustrating when you get appointments for first thing in the morning. #wotw
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got a better appointment time. I usually get silly time for my appointments, like 7am and 7pm! Who wants to be at the hospital at 7pm. Luckily when I go to the ward for my treatments they are find if I turn up late. I'm sorry your appointment with the CYPS didn't go so well. It's hard but you need to keep fighting for the help she needs, it only gets harder as they get older :( xxx #wotw
ReplyDeleteIt is so good that the s good are willing to heko, it makes all the difference. These meetings are so timing. Well done on the sats that is great news X #wotw
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be happening a lot recently - people having either pre-formed judgments of things or judging things without being aware of the full facts.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it has something to do with this younger generation....
Yes, lots of appointments sprung on you. I agree that it's strange that a separate meeting wasn't set up for CYPS to meet Ellie. Your Headteacher sounds like she is on the ball. Good to hear that Ellie did better in her SATS. #wotw
ReplyDeleteAh I bet that meeting was tough, I think schools are so quick to call the autism card and maybe they should be looking at classroom management and students support. I hope things get better x
ReplyDeleteSounds very busy! Hope the performance goes well next week #WotW
ReplyDeleteSounds like a stressful, emotional week with a lot of demands. Hope you had a lovely Mother's Day and that this week is more relaxed. I always look forward to dropping by your blog and catching up with your life. #MMBC
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have been really busy Kim. Hope you get a bit of a rest this week :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a busy week - of appointments as well as to & froing between people really. I hope the weekend provided some rest & relaxation, as well as a lovely Mother's Day #WotW
ReplyDeleteWhat a busy week you had and it sounds like quite a stressful one. It's good to hear that Ellie's school are being so supportive and hopefully having an EHCP in place will help her. I hope that the school production this week is going well :-) #WotW
