How to create the ultimate family games night with older kids!

Planning family time when your kids are teenagers or young adults is a whole different ball game. Gone are the days of jelly and ice cream and a quick round of Snakes & Ladders before bedtime. These days, your kids might be taller than you, have better social lives and let’s face it might be a little too cool to sit around the table playing Happy Families.

Fear not! It is possible to create a family games night that doesn’t involve eye rolls, mysterious disappearances to their rooms or them suddenly remembering an urgent FaceTime with their mates. In fact, with a little planning and maybe a bribe or two you can have everyone laughing, competing and actually wanting to spend time together. Yes, even your moody 17 year old and your 22 year old who now drinks proper coffee. lol

Let them choose the games!

The fastest way to ruin the evening is insisting on playing a game you loved in 1998 that now takes four hours and has 96 complicated rules. Instead, hand over the reins and let them suggest some games. They’re way more likely to join in if they feel like they’ve had a say.

Teenagers often love fast paced or funny games like Cards Against Humanity, you can get a Family Edition, Dobble,  Exploding Kittens, 5 Second Rule, What Do You Meme? or UNO Flip!! Just remember they might say they’re not fussed but the minute they start winning, it’s game on!

Snacks are important!

If you want to lure them in, feed them! No one can resist a good snack table and your teens/young adults will show up purely for the food even if they pretend it’s a coincidence. Think nachos, loaded fries, a pizza or two, pick and mix sweets or even a themed picky platter if you're feeling fancy.

Make it a tech-tolerant zone!

Hear me out. Instead of banning phones completely (which is bound to lead to sneaky scrolling under the table), why not include them? Lots of fun games are app based and easy to join in on. And if someone’s taking photos or videos of the chaos? All the better. You can create a little tradition of documenting your game nights.

Add a bit of friendly competition!

Teenagers and young adults love a bit of banter. So make it competitive. Add a leader board, create silly trophies, or even promise a prize like they get to choose the takeaway next time or skip the washing up for a week. Little stakes equals big motivation.

Keep it relaxed!

The aim is to make this feel like something fun, not an obligation. Keep the schedule light, maybe just a couple of games, let them lounge in hoodies or PJ bottoms and don’t force anything. If it ends early with everyone chatting on the sofa or arguing about what film to watch next that still counts as a win!

Make it a regular thing but not too regular!

Don’t push for weekly if everyone’s got a million things going on. A monthly games night or just whenever everyone’s home, is enough to keep it special. Make it something to actually look forward to. They might not admit it, but deep down, they’ll love it.

Lego Harry Potter - Dobby the House Elf set!

Last Christmas I got the Harry Potter Dobby Lego set and I only got around to doing it at the end of last month, better late than never. Dobby is my favourite character from the Harry Potter movies. He is a little bit chaotic, has a good heart and is just adorable.

The Dobby the House Elf figure has a posable head, ears, arms and fingers so you can change his look and he can hold the brick built accessories which include Aunt Petunia’s floating pudding cake, a model of Tom Riddle’s diary and of course Harry Potter’s sock! Master has given Dobby a sock. hehehe

Last year I put together the Hedwig Lego set and it was a challenge. I imagined this one being the same but it was totally different to put together. I got started and it didn't take long to see Dobby coming together. The detail on it is fantastic. I love Dobby's hands and the moveable fingers.

The most challenging bit came when I was doing Dobby's ears, I ended up with both facing the same way but I needed one in reverse. I got there eventually and just look at him, those eyes!

The accessories which came with Dobby are just brilliant, even the evil diary owned by Tom Riddle. Aunt Petunia’s floating cake was a fiddly to put together with the little pieces and I think I lost a couple of the red one's from the top. I did knock a few on the floor and some obviously went missing. I am sure they will turn up and then I will just pop them on. 

I loved making this set, it was straightforward to build and I completed it in just under two hours which I felt was the perfect time. Even though it seemed quick to put together compared to some Lego sets it was fun and I am so happy with the end result! This would make a great gift for any Harry Potter fan and now it is being sold for round about £18 to £20.

Five fantastic travel games.

It's getting to that time of year when we could be travelling more on days out and holidays and it's always good to have something to keep everyone amused. Travel games can ease boredom on flights or trains, keep kids quiet on long car journeys and even provide a bit of entertainment in waiting rooms at the doctors or dentists. Technology is great, using tablets and phones to pass the time but sometimes it's good to unplug.

When I was a kid travel games weren't really a thing unless you counted games like I-spy, 20 questions or memory games. Now you can get travel size games of things like Monopoly, chess and just about everything that you can think of!

Here are some of my favourites.

Top Trumps!

Top Trumps is one of the UK's top card game and has been a family favourite for over 40 years. No matter your age, gender or interests, there is a Top Trumps set for you. Over the years we've had sets with animals, the kids favourite movies and TV shows, football and of course my favourite set, Harry Potter. hehehe It's a game for all ages and my girls never get bored of it.

Top Trumps is traditionally played between two or more people. Each card lists numerical data that players compare with the aim of 'trumping' their opponent by having a greater value. The winner gains the opponents cards with the game continuing until only one player holds all the cards.

Dobble!

A clever game with 55 cards, 57 symbols in total and 8 symbols per card. Each two cards have one symbol in common, that you have to find and name to win! Dobble is a game that encourages concentration and observation.

Dobble is perfect for train journeys especially if you are lucky enough to be sat around a table. We have had a couple of sets over the years and love it. There are themed sets including Minions and Harry Potter and it's good for all ages.

Pass The Pigs!

Pass the Pigs is an addictive dice game for 2 to 4 players. It's small plastic case makes it easy to carry and a terrific travel game to have with you on a trip. Points are gained and lost depending on how the pig has landed. Whatever you do you don’t want to throw an oinker or a piggyback!

We have played the giant Pass the Pigs game and thought it was fantastic fun. It is such a simple game but can get real competitive real quickly. 

 5 Second Rule Mini Travel Card Game!

A mini version of 5 Second Rule game that you can play anywhere! It seems like it would be easy to name three things you find in the desert or down the back of your sofa but can you do it under pressure? You have to be quick, so just say whatever comes to mind and risk silly answers slipping out. hehehe

We have had a couple of the 5 second rule games but not the travel one before. I have bought it for when we go away later in the year. It is such a fun game.

Tension Travel Edition Game!

The Harry Potter Hedwig Lego set - Review!

I got the Harry Potter Hedwig Lego set a while ago and never got around to putting it together until the start of this year.

When I opened the box I thought it will only take a couple of hours to put together, I was so wrong. lol The last time I did anything with Lego was when the kids were much younger and their Lego sets had a lot less parts. When I was a child I had Lego but no real sets, I just built what I wanted with the blocks that I had. This set came with 4 bags of Lego, pack one being the base, the 2 pack being the body of Hedwig, 3 mostly being the wings and 4 everything else that was left.

Building the base and body of Hedwig was pretty straightforward and what I did notice was the little handle, I had no idea that the wings on Hedwig would move until I was building. Turning the handle operates a mechanism that drives Hedwig's wings up and down.

I found it a challenge to put the wings together and on. I had them on upside down and the wrong way around at one point but I eventually got them right. It wasn't looking much like an owl until I got further into the build and started adding things to the wings. The detail is really amazing and it looks so realistic.

The finished Lego Hedwig really is stunning! It was well worth the effort that it took to put it together! The instructions are easy to follow but there was a few parts where I really had to study them to figure out where parts went. It took me about 3 and a half hours to put together, I did it over a few days. It measures 20 cm (7.8”) from beak to tail and 17 cm (6.7”) tall and looks really realistic. I love that the wings move, that is a really nice addition.

This is a great set for any Harry Potter fan! I love it, I now have it on a shelf in my living room as I am so proud of it!

I paid about £29.99 for it a while ago when it was on sale but I have since seen it on Amazon for just over £30.00.

Top 10 Toys for Christmas 2022 from Amazon!

My girls are older now and aren't into toys. Hmmf. I do miss buying toys and seeing my girls excitement on Christmas morning when they have got the one toy they really wanted and then there was always the fun of getting it out of the box and putting it together. hehehe

Can you name 10 types of pasta in 60 seconds? What about 10 different cheeses? You'll find the answers on the tip of your tongue, but can you shout them quickly enough?

This is such a fun game and the timer seems to run down so quickly when you are trying to think of 10 things in a certain subject. Who'd have thought my family couldn't name 10 things on an English breakfast in the time given! To make things interesting only answers on the game card count, causing a little excitement and debate as it isn’t always the most common food item included. My family were very annoyed that onion rings weren't a correct answer for the breakfast card even though we sometimes have them on an English breakfast if we're having it for tea. 

Most of the cards feature a subject that we could name the majority of the things but there were some which where we only finished with a couple of points. I drink wine but could only get 2 of the Wine regions in France.

I would say this is a good game for teenagers and adults as you do have to know a little about food and I think younger children would struggle. 

On the instructions for the game it mentions progressing around the board but there is no board with this game, I assume this version is an add on for the original Tension game but it really doesn't matter, a board isn't needed. You just play with the score pad. 

We love this game and it is fun to play as a family and I think we will be playing again and again when we have time together.

We are at that time of year when the games come out on an evening or a rainy day. Now that my girls are older the games that we play have changed. A lot are card type games instead of the traditional board games. Quick to set up and a lot of fun. We are always on the look out to add to our collection so when we had the chance to try a new game I jumped a the chance. 

We were sent the card game So Wrong It's Right to have a look at. Another classic game created by TV and radio personality Matt Edmondson. It's an easy quiz game but each question has five possible answers. With 500 questions and 2000 possible answers, with this game you will never play the same one twice. Perfect for large or small groups.

How it works is that each question has 5 possible answers, with action cards dictating how players must answer the question. ‘Got it’ means you answer correctly, ‘Flip it’ means you flip the words around in your answer, ‘Switch it’ means you switch the first letters of your answer, ‘Ditch it’ means you lose the first letter of your answer, and ‘Not it’ means you give a wrong answer. Giving the correct type of answer earns you action cards and at the end of the game, the player with the most action cards is the winner!

The manufacturer recommended age is 12 years plus and that is just because the questions are general knowledge. You could play in teams with a younger child if you want to play this game.

It was such an easy game to play. Set up in a minute and we skimmed through the instructions of how to play and all in all we were away playing within 5 minutes of opening the box.

The longer we played the funnier it became and the louder we all got trying to the be the first to answer. The questions are not really hard, my girls got nearly all of them with no hints but flipping, switching and ditching elements really add to the fun. It really makes you think. I just couldn't get the hand of ditching the first letters of an answer but my girls were brilliant at that. Ellie did make me laugh out loud when she couldn't think of wrong answers for quite a few questions. lol

This would be a great game to play either at a family games night or a larger get together. It is fantastic for older children and teenagers and really is a lot of fun to play.

We are at that time of year where the games come out on an evening, especially a Saturday when we're all home. We are always on the look out for new games to add to our collection so when I got the chance to try out Zombie Kittens I jumped at the chance.

 

Zombie Kittens is an undead twist on the original Exploding Kittens game that keeps every player involved in the game, dead or alive, until the very end. The last player alive wins!

Give “nine lives” a whole new meaning. In Zombie Kittens, exploding just means you’ll have a chance to rise from the grave and take your revenge. Bring back your friends (and enemies) in this undead spin on your favorite Russian Roulette style kitten card game.

In the deck of cards are some Exploding Kittens. You play the game by putting the deck face down and taking turns drawing cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten. When that happens, that person explodes and they are out of the game (for now).

There are 61 original cards with brand new illustrations and they give you powerful tools to help you avoid exploding! The cards are very cute, not scary at all but they really can change the game. hehehe. This process continues until there's only 1 player left who wins the game.

The rules how to play are pretty daunting when you look at the instruction sheet and it took us a little while to understand them but after watching a video of how to play and just getting on with the game we soon got the hang of it.

This really is a fun game for ages seven plus. You can play Zombie Kittens by itself with up to 5 players or combine with any other version of Exploding Kittens to unlock a mega game for up to 9 players. Each game lasts around 15 minutes but can last longer if you have a family who like to try to cheat and argue like I do. lol

We seem to spend less time together as a family during the summer on an evening so when the darker nights draw in and Saturday night TV gets good again we like to spend a Saturday night together playing games whether it be on the computers or a good old fashioned board game.

Recently we were sent the Cheatwell Games Top It from Zatu Games to try out. My family is very competitive and now that my girls are older it's every man or woman for themselves. lol

In this edge of your seat party game you race to place your cones on letter discs whilst calling out examples to teasing topics. But beware, any other player can Top It with another answer and place their cone on top of yours! Only the last cone counts and bags all the points!

In the box is 76 Top It double sided topic cards, 60 coloured cones in 6 colours, 18 letter discs, a 60 second sand timer, a pencil, a scoring pad and a set of rules.

For ages 10+ and up to 6 players the rules are simple to pick up. Players are each given 10 cones of the same colour, then 9 letter discs are laid out and a topic card is turned over. The timer is flipped and everyone plays at once, racing to name something that fits the topic and begins with of the 9 letters on show putting their cone on that letter. However if someone thinks of something starting with the same letter after you, they can then Top-It with their own coloured cone and the colour at the top wins the points. There is bonus points to be had if you end up with your coloured cone on 3 cards in a row which adds to the excitement. The winner is the first to get to 50 points.

The age says for 10 years and above but I think younger kids could easily join in as long as you take it easy on them. Most of the topics are really easy to come up with answers for but it is funny how your mind can go blank when you are asked to name something beginning with a certain letter. "Things that are brown" really got me stumped. hehehe.

It is a lot of fun to play and can get quite noisy with everyone shouting over the top of each other but the chaos adds to the fun of the game! 60 seconds really doesn't seem that long when playing. I can see this becoming a firm favourite as it was so simple to set up and play. 

You can buy this game for £18 from Zatu Games. I think it is well worth the price, especially with the colder months just around the corner when you will be spending more time at home.

I read the instructions how to play and at first it seemed a little complicated but once I had looked at everything in the battle ball it made sense.

I think the Marvel Battle Balls will be great for kids and even adults to play over the summer. I know when I was a child I loved things like this. Collectible figures, card games and the added mystery of the hidden figure in the Thanostone. I was very happy with hero figures in this Battle Ball. Iron Man is one of my favourite Marvel characters and I like the Scarlet Witch, mostly.
