A round up of Blogtober22.

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Happy Halloween / Round up of the month.

Here we are at the end of October and at the end of another Blogtober! I have posted a post following the prompts every day throughout the month. With some posts I might have stretched the meaning of the prompt a little but they were all pretty fitting. Like on day 11, What are you scared of I shared a review of the game Zombie Kittens. Zombies are something to be scared of. hehehe

Autumn scene

October is probably my favourite month of blogging as I am so organised. With knowing the prompts I can get the blog posts written up for the whole month pretty early, well most of them and then it gives me chance to have a little break from writing blog posts apart from my regular one's like my Meal Plan Monday, my Word of the Week blog post and Project 365. I should take that time to write blog posts for November and December but the break has been lovely!

It was nice to see a lot of familiar blogs joining in with Blogtober and it was also nice to find some new blogs to read. The Nutmeg Millennial and the HarassedMom to name a couple. I read about so many books from Amanda at Your Book Friend. I am not a big reader but blogs like her's really do get me interested in them again.

It was funny reading the first few days of the Blogtober posts where a few people said they weren't going to bother with it but then saw my post about it and felt they wanted to join in. I think it's the only time I have been a real influencer. hehehe Jo and Leisa who jointly blog at Joleisa joined in and I have loved reading their posts. I enjoy reading their posts anyway but getting one for most of the month has been a real treat.

It was so good to reconnect with Vicky from Miss Tilly and Me. I've read her blog off and on for years and she is such a lovely person and the fantastic Shell who for the prompt My Favourite Bloggers chose me which shocked me so much and made me smile from ear to ear! I feel like I have got to know quite a few other bloggers too.

I think my favourite posts that I have shared over the last month has been The Autumn Tag: This or That. I have been blogging 10 years next month so it is nice to find a tag that I haven't done on my blog and sharing our struggles with my families Mental Health.

I am sad to see October and Blogtober end. It has been a great month. November is tomorrow and that's when I can get excited about my blogs 10th anniversary, my birthday and Christmas!

How was October for you?

Our weekly meal plan! 31st October - 6th November. #MealPlanningMonday

Our weekly meal plan

Last weeks meal plan went really well. We ate everything that I had planned and on the day I had planned too. Hooray! It has given me motivation for meal planning again. I was feeling a bit blah about it recently. It's hard work having to come up with a meal every day. I ask my family for help and suggestions and if they were planning what we are eating we'd be having plates of "I don't know, I don't mind" or takeaway every night. lol

This week will all be about getting back to normal, half term is over and Ellie is back at school and is doing the second half of her mock exams. She said she has the best exams this week. English Literature all about A Christmas Carol which she has revised hard for, she has a full day doing her photography and another full day doing engineering, her two favourite subjects.

I will have some company this week, Stu has some holidays to use up from work. He was told to use some of his holidays as no one can take them between the middle of November and the end of January as it's the companies busiest time and from then until April everyone seems to take holidays so he'd struggle to get them. He's took 3 days off and along with his normal days off it turns out he's only working 2 days out of the next 8. Our local pub has started serving food again so I think we might treat ourselves to a pub lunch one day.

On the menu this week we have:

Monday - Pumpkin soup which I made yesterday along with crusty bread.
Tuesday - Something out of the freezer with chips and most probably baked beans.
Thursday - Spaghetti bolognese with garlic bread.
Friday - Leftover bolognese over jacket potatoes.
Saturday - We're eating out. We're going to see a firework display and will get something to eat while we are there. Burgers probably.
Sunday - A fry up. Sausages, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, baked beans, tomatoes and toast.

What are you eating this week?

Our carved pumpkins. #MySundaySnapshot

It's almost Halloween and we always carve our pumpkins the weekend before. It was just Ellie and I carving one as Becky was sleeping for a night shift. We learned a little trick of TikTok, use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. It's a game changer and made the job a lot easier!

Week 43 of #Project365 22nd - 28th October. A photo every day for a year!

Happy Saturday! I hope you have all had a good week. We have here, it has been half term so there has been a good mix of fun, days out and relaxing. I even managed a lie on on Thursday. Ellie and I didn't get up until after 10am. Becky was already up as she had another driving lesson which went really well. She had the experience of driving in the rain and she feels like she learned a lot.

We don't have much planned for the weekend. I think we are just going to have a chilled one before next week and things get busy for us. Halloween, Bonfire night, Christmas shopping, the Christmas lights being switched on really early in our little town, meals out, my birthday, the World Cup starting and goodness knows what else. I am very excited for November and even more so after yesterday and Stu rang to say he'd taken some holidays as he has a lot and they're not allowed to take any from the middle of November until February because it's their busiest time. He's took 3 days off but actually gets 5 with his normal days off. Hooray!

Now for a photo every day!

Cupboard under the stairs and Reese's chocolate
Plate of food and Autumn leaves
Hole in fireplace and my girls
Body book

295/365 - 22nd October
I cleaned out the cupboard under the stairs. I do it every year when the boiler man is due to do the gas safety check. Decluttering also makes room for me to put Christmas things. The food drinks and sweets that I want no one to touch until December.

296/365 - 23rd October
I was very disappointed when I opened my Reese's pumpkins and they didn't have faces on them. Hmmf.

297/365 - 24th October
We went to the all you can eat place in Hull and we all ate until we couldn't anymore. Becky missed out as she was sleeping for a night shift but has said when we go Christmas shopping in November she is going to treat me to a meal there as an early birthday treat.

298/365 - 25th October
It is looking very Autumnal now. The trees are losing all of their leaves.

299/365 - 26th October
The boiler man was here checking all of our gas appliances. He had the fire off the wall doing some checks, I was so ashamed of the dust but in my defence we can't get under the fire to clean it.

300/365 - 27th October
I convinced the girls to wear coats when they were on their way out as it was chucking it down. About 15 minutes after they left the rain stopped and the sun came out. I thought they would be grumpy with me making them wear their coats but thankfully it started raining again later in the afternoon. hehehe

301/365 - 28th October
I was sent a book to feature on my blog and will be next week. Body by James Davies. It is the ultimate guide to preventing pain and fuelling your body to its fullest potential. It is very interesting.

Scary films that I have seen! #Blogtober22

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Favourite Halloween/ scary films!

I am not a fan of horror films now. I used to be but since I have got older and watched a couple of really scary films I went right off them.

Spooky warehouse

If you go onto Google and ask what the scariest film of all time was it usually says The Exorcist. I watched it years ago, probably when I was a teenager and I didn't get why. I didn't think it was that scary. The same with The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, they made such a big deal about it being shown on TV because it had been banned for so long before. It wasn't nice but it wasn't scary to me.

The first film I remember being scared by was the original IT film. My brother and I thought we were so clever, we rented the two videos from the local corner shop. I was about 14 years old and my brother was about 12. It was still in 2 parts back then, I am not sure if the remake is the same. My mum did ask what we were watching and we just said a film about a clown. hahaha

Final Destination still makes me think twice before doing something careless, I'm afraid of roller coasters because of it and I will never go on a tanning bed and being in a car behind trucks carrying logs or anything similar is just asking for trouble. The Blair Witch Project was such a big thing when I was younger. The fact that nothing really happened messed with my head.

Horror films never used to scare me that much until one Sunday evening in 2002! Again I am blaming my brother for encouraging me to watch a scary film. He had bought me a DVD player for my birthday and a few DVD's that he thought I would like. I loved Coyote Ugly but the same couldn't be said for The Ring! The Ring was a 2002 remake of a Japanese horror film. After her niece's horrifying death, Rachel, a young journalist, investigates a mysterious videotape that kills its viewers within a week's time. That girl Samara with the hair who comes out of the TV makes me shudder just thinking about her now. I used to have one of those TV's in a cabinet and for months I couldn't sleep with the cabinet open in case Samara came out of it. It wasn't just me though, my brothers partner bought and watched The Ring as well and she was terrified too.

That was the film which put me off horror films so I am really choosy about what I watch now. If I do choose to watch anything that is slightly scary now I need to watch all of the trailers and read exactly what happens. Most of what I read about I don't watch but over the last few years I have watched and enjoyed scary films including: A Quiet Place, Split, Birdbox and I can happily watch episode and episode of The Walking Dead although Negan really did used to scare me when he was swing happy with Lucille. I'd rather see blood and gore than not see the things that are there to scare us like on movies like Paranormal Activity. I saw about 10 minutes of that when Becky was watching it and it really spooked me. I think it's the ghosty, spooky one's which get my mind working overdrive. I do not like them!

Do you like horror films?

This week my Word of the Week is: Old! #WotW

This week my Word of the Week is:

Old

When I think back over the past week I think the word "old" sums up our week pretty well. Old things, feeling old and old places.

I did the annual tidying out of the cupboard under the stairs, the cupboard of doom. I do it at this time every year. Partly because the boiler man was coming to do the yearly gas check and partly so I can make space for Christmas things. Last year Stu must have cleaned the cupboard out because there were shoes and bags in there which were old, things that we've not worn and used in years and things I would have thrown out last year. lol I was ruthless. There was 3 piles: keep, bin and donate. I think I did a good job, it is a lot less cluttered now.

On Sunday we were very excited about the new episode of Doctor Who. Ellie has been slowly watching the old episodes and is enjoying watching the David Tennant one's so imagine her joy when she saw the Jodie Whittaker doctor regenerate into the David Tennant one!! We were all a lot surprised, shouting what, what, what at the TV. I am just gutted we have another year to wait for the next episode.

Stu, Ellie and me went to Hull on Monday to do a bit of Christmas shopping and noticed that Hull's Old Town had been made to look older with World War 2 decorations and things. We thought it might have been WW1 and could be something to do with Remembrance Day. Nope, on Tuesday when Stu left work there were trucks with huge green screens on and then on Wednesday roads were closed and they were filming for the Netflix show The Crown. I thought it was so interesting.

The boiler man came to do the gas safety check on Wednesday, he was supposed to come on Tuesday but forgot. Ugh! He had no other excuse. Last year when he came he replaced a part on the boiler and struggled to get a part and said it will need replacing soon but it turns out the old boiler is running fine, the issue he had was with our old gas fire.

Old gas fire

He did a smoke test on it and it wasn't pulling the smoke back like it should. He ended up saying it wasn't safe and condemned it. He capped the gas pipe so it's just sat there at the moment blocking the hole in the fireplace. The landlord is getting us a new one, hopefully one which looks a little more modern than the one we have. (This is an old picture, we haven't just reconnected the fire.)

This week saw us get a new Prime Minister. It made me chuckle, it is the first time I am older than our Prime Minister. Ellie said Rishi and I would have been in the same year at school but I am still older than him. lol I haven't seen much of the news since he walked into number 10 but saw a clip of him doing Prime Minister's Questions and it looked like he was loving his life. He stepped up and gave as good as he got. I am not a fan of the conservatives but I do think Rishi Sunak will do a better job than Liz Truss.

I came up with a great idea for Ellie for Christmas! A record player. She is so into music and has been wanting to collect vinyl but I thought record players were so expensive but it turns out they have some decent one's online for around £35. I was all set to get her one until I looked at the list of records that she wanted. Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and the Arctic Monkeys to name a few. It turns out they cost the same as record player! I remember when records used to be cheap and tapes & CD's cost more. I saw a video on TikTok why Generation X is angry. They had to replace their record collection with tapes, then tapes with CD's, then CD's for MP3's and then digital subscriptions. Now it's gone full circle and the young one's are buying records. lol It makes me feel old. lol

How has your week been? I hope you've had a good one!

Toffee Apple Crumble - Recipe!

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Anything apple!

Now that it's getting chillier on an evening my mind turns to hot puddings and desserts. We love anything that goes with custard especially sweet pies and crumbles. Recently I was sent a recipe for Toffee Apple Crumble to share with you all. I will be making it soon, I think my family love it.

The Toffee Apple Crumble is a warming recipe made with Granny Smith apples, toffee and demerara sugar. With only 7 ingredients and 5 pieces of kitchen equipment needed, this recipe is perfect for those who are after a simple and seasonal recipe that everyone will enjoy.

Toffee Apple Crumble

Ingredients:
150g of toffee's.
2 of tbsp water.
7 Granny Smith apples, each one peeled, cored and cut into 8 wedges.
200g of plain flour.
100g of unsalted butter.
100g of demerara sugar.
Ice cream or custard to serve.

Equipment.
A saucepan.
A wooden spoon.
A knife.
A baking dish.
A mixing bowl.

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (fan).

2. Place the toffees in the saucepan with 2 tbsp of water over a medium heat and stir continuously with the wooden spoon until melted and combined.

3. Add in the apple wedges, coat evenly in the toffee and cook for a few minutes before transferring to the baking dish.

4. In the mixing bowl, bring the plain flour, butter and demerara sugar together by rubbing it between your fingertips. Once a crumble consistency is achieved, sprinkle the mixture evenly over the top of the toffee apple mixture in the baking dish.

5. Bake for 30 minutes until golden and crisp on top.

Serve with vanilla ice cream or custard.

My Halloween traditions! #Blogtober22

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: My Halloween traditions!

My Halloween traditions have changed so much over the years. When I was a child we lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere and there wasn't much chance to go trick or treating as our nearest neighbour was just under a mile away. Thankfully the school I went to always had a Halloween disco so there was the chance to dress up and join in the spooky fun.

First Halloween costumes

I didn't really get into Halloween until I was much older and had kids myself. I carved my first pumpkin when Ellie was little and I always remember we had bought the kids their first Halloween costumes, they were both little witches and that was the day that Ellie walked for the first time. We joked that it was the magic of the witch costume. hehehe

Since that Halloween we have always had a lot of fun each year. The girls used to love carving pumpkins even though they hated scraping the insides out. There was always a lot of screeching and shouts of "mam, can you do it".

My girls carving pumpkins

For a good few years we would meet up with friends from the girls primary school and go trick or treating. It was always a lot of fun and the amount of sweets that the kids got were crazy.

A lot of the time Halloween would fall during the half term holiday from school which means we had plenty of time to do some spooky crafts and baking! Fingers crossed this week we will be doing some baking with a couple of the baking kits that I have bought from the supermarket.

Halloween cupcakes and biscuits

Now that the kids have got older I am not that involved in their Halloween plans. Hmmf. They are too old for their old mum to go trick or treating with them. Becky isn't bothered about Trick or Treating but I am still sending her out to keep an eye on Ellie.

The last time they went trick or treating was in 2019 before Covid. I don't know what happened last year, I think it was raining, really windy and Becky might have been on a night shift. This year she finishes a night shift on the morning so she should be wide awake to supervise Ellie and her friends.

Around here everyone gets involved in Halloween and we get a ton of trick or treaters knocking at the door so I will have to make sure I have plenty of sweets to give out.

With Ellie going back to school after half term on Monday which is Halloween I think we will be carving our pumpkins over the weekend and hopefully I will give making some pumpkin soup a try.

Becky is determined to get me to watch some scary films but I am hoping she forgets about the suggestion because I am not a fan of anything too scary! Eek!

What do you do for Halloween?

Five fantastic Halloween Crafts.

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Autumn / Halloween crafts!

We love to decorate a little at Halloween. You can buy a whole host of decorations, there seems to be more and more on sale every year in the shops but it is also good to make some yourself to use year after year.

Crafts from Baker Ross

Years ago we used to review a lot of craft kits from Baker Ross and we still have a lot of those Halloween decorations that we bring out each year. The kids cringe at their creations but they do make me smile remembering years gone by.

Here are some of the best Halloween crafts that I have seen from other bloggers!

Halloween Decoupage Letters!

Halloween Decoupage Letters

From Sticky Mud and Belly Laughs there are the Halloween Decoupage Letters! I think these are so simple to make and are easy peasy for a craft novice like me. I could just imagine these on the shelf in the living room. They're so pretty.

Toilet Paper Roll Frankenstein!

Toilet Paper Roll Frankenstein

Make your own model Frankenstein monster with this super simple cardboard toilet paper roll craft that is so much fun for kids to make at Halloween from In the Playroom. What a cutie this is and it's made from a simple toilet paper roll that we all have going spare! I know I can always go in our bathroom and find at least one.

There is something about painted rocks which make me smile and they are so simple to make. The Inspiration Edit has a great guide on how to get started on painting rocks for Halloween

Halloween Felt Bunting!

Felt Bunting

The Homemade Halloween felt bunting from Jennifer's Little World is just adorable. I am a sucker for bunting and Halloween bunting is just the best. It looks a great way to use up scraps of felt and spare craft supplies that you have stashed away.

Creepy Halloween Jars - Upcycled Decorations!

Making decorations from things that you have around your home is a good way to reuse and upcycle. These Creepy Halloween Jars from A Rose Tinted World use jars that could have just gone into the recycling. They are so pretty and really set the Halloween mood.

Some alternative Halloween costumes for adults. #Blogtober22

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Halloween costumes!

Halloween costumes are fun but I think at nearly 43 years old I am a little too old for the spooky, scary Halloween costumes. I want to think I am anyway. I feel too grown up to wear the typical Halloween costumes which can sometimes can seem a little tacky for us adults. I was out to find something a little different and I came across a whole host of things on Amazon!

Holding a pumpkin

The Halloween dresses that I found on Amazon were just fantastic. Way better than the typical witchy one's or Morticia Addams one's that you think of when it comes to Halloween. There were a couple that I would be tempted to wear all year around.

Fashion Star Womens Halloween Dress.
Toamen Women Pumpkin Skull SkaterProm Swing Dress.
Women's Pumpkin Witch Pattern Printed Dress.
Women's Gold Foil Floral Skull Print T-shirt Dress.
Women's Halloween Dress Long Sleeve Pumpkin Printed Cocktail Swing Dress.

If you don't fancy going full on Halloween you could always just wear a Halloween themed t-shirt with some jeans or pants. As Becky has got older she has just gone for a Halloween themed t-shirt as she thought that she was too old for a kids costume. Here are some, that I also found on Amazon!

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Autumn Winter skincare!

I love a soak in the bath especially at this time of year when it's cold out. There's nothing better than a warm up in the tub. getting out and putting my fleecy pj's on. A bubble bath is nice but you can always make it nicer.

Lush products

I am a big fan of Lush products especially at this time of year with all of the seasonal stuff, the Halloween and Christmas things. I only ever buy products from Lush when I visit Hull and that is maybe a few times a year. I know they're expensive but they are such a nice treat.

Our weekly meal plan! 24th - 30th October. #MealPlanningMonday

Our weekly meal plan

Last weeks meal plan went OK. Wednesday came around and I couldn't be bothered making the Minestrone soup and we ended up having sausage pasta and we swapped Friday and Saturday around. It was ready meal curries on Friday and the kids had pizza and fries on Saturday and Stu and I had one of the £12 Asda meal deals. One of those where you get 1 main, 1 side, 1 dessert and 1 drink or chocolates for £12. The steak and red wine pies are delicious and the lemon cheesecake too.

Last week I spotted that Asda were releasing their Christmas delivery slots to delivery pass users so I bought the delivery pass and got my Christmas slot! Hooray! It was the exact one that I wanted too. I didn't just buy the delivery pass to get the Christmas slot, I used to use Tesco every week but struggled to get a slot with them even with their delivery pass. It was time to let them go, I have been using Asda more and more and I am finding their prices more reasonable.

It's half term here this week, hooray and we have a few things planned. Poor Becky has a couple of night shifts to get through before she can join in but she won't be missing out on all the fun things, her and Ellie will be having a day out later in the week. Ellie is very annoyed that they day that she goes back to school is Halloween. It does seem a little unfair but I think it makes next week more exciting. Halloween at the start of the week and Bonfire night at the end.

On the menu this week we have:

Monday - We will be eating out at lunch so will probably bring something home to eat later on. It will most likely be Greggs or Subway.
WednesdaySandwiches, crisps and cake! We're having a baking day so there will be plenty of treats to eat.
Thursday - Jacket potatoes with baked beans and cheese.
Friday - Fish, chips and mushy peas.
SaturdayRed onion and bacon tart with new potatoes.
Sunday - A roast dinner of some sort.

What are you eating this week?

How to make the perfect Pumpkin Spice Latte at home

I am taking part in Blogtober 2022 and will be writing posts with various themes/prompts throughout October. Today's prompt is: Anything pumpkin!

Autumn lovers and pumpkin worshippers alike are happy at this time of year with Starbucks selling their Pumpkin Spice Latte. I had never tried one until this year. It was nice, something different but not amazing but the thing was a few days later I fancied another. There is some kind of Autumn magic about them.

Pumpkin Spice Latte

How to make the perfect Pumpkin Spice Latte at home!

1. Create some pumpkin puree.
The first step is to make the pumpkin puree. Begin by slicing, deseeding and then deveining your pumpkin. Bake the pumpkin for 45 minutes at 374 degrees Fahrenheit (190 ◦C) in a preheated oven. Then blend in a food processor until smooth.

If you are short on time, perhaps try a pre made pumpkin puree that will make the process speedier. Supermarkets sell it, especially at this time of year.

2. Create the perfect spice blend.

Whilst you wait for the puree to bake, you can begin to create the vital spice blend that gives the latte its distinctive flavour.

To create the perfect blend of spices, you will need:

4 teaspoons of ground cinnamon.
2 teaspoons of ground ginger.
1 teaspoon of ground cloves.
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg.

It is worth noting that this recipe can be adapted to suit most dietary requirements or if you only have cinnamon sticks, you can ground down to be used in this recipe.

3. Heat up your chosen milk.

In a pan, warm 2 mugs of your chosen milk (dairy or non-dairy alternative).

4. Mix together.

In a heatproof glass or mug combine 2 tablespoons of pumpkin puree and 1 shot of espresso, add half a teaspoon of your spice mix and whisk until smooth. For extra sweetness, include 1 tablespoon of sugar or 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Add in the warm milk and any leftover froth and stir.”

To achieve maximum autumnal cosiness serve in a large mug or to achieve the cafe aesthetic, serve in a tall glass. Don’t forget to serve with whipped cream, a dusting of cocoa powder and a cinnamon stick for stirring.

The idea for this blog post and instructions on how to make a Pumpkin Spice Latte came from Jack and Beyond.

Week 42 of #Project365 15th - 21st October. A photo every day for a year!

Finally half term is here. I am very glad of it. This last week was long. I think it's because the last few days have been gloomy and wet. Next weeks weather isn't looking much better but we won't have to be up at the crack of dawn, well Ellie and I won't and we have some plans.

This past week has been a good one. The highlight of it was getting my Christmas food shop delivery booked with Asda. That's one less thing to worry about. Becky has started her driving lessons and the first one went brilliantly and Ellie is doing really well with her mock exams.

Now for a photo every day!

Burgers and Christmas music on the TV
Premium Bonds website
A desk and the light on
Raining outside and the cupboard under the stairs

288/365 - 15th October
Burgers and fries for tea. Ellie put the burgers together and made me take a photo as they looked so good.

289/365 - 16th October
Christmas music is on one of the music channels on the TV which has made me so happy. I know, I know, I will be sick of it come Christmas. lol

290/365 - 17th October
My dad won some money with his Premium Bonds and gave the girls £25 each to get them started with it. We set them up on Monday and they're all set for Novembers draw. Fingers crossed they win something eventually.

291/365 - 18th October
Becky finally got her desk put together after buying it this time last month. It took her hours and Stu ended up helping her but it's done and it looks fantastic. She said she wants lots of pretty desk things for Christmas so that has helped me out.

292/365 - 19th October
I am having to switch the living room light on earlier and earlier each day and Thursday and yesterday it was on all day as it was so dark in here. Ugh.

293/365 - 20th October
It was a wet and grey day. I was out in the morning and got soaked so when I got in I had a hot bath and put my pj's on. It was lovely.

We have the gas safety check next week and the man needs to be in to see the boiler so the annual tidying of the cupboard of doom happened. It didn't actually take me too long but tell me who needs 67 reusable bags for life? That's how many we had! I've kept some and the rest have gone into the garage. I'm sure they'll come in for something.
