Baker Days Letterbox Cake - Review!!

Everyone loves cake right? 

We do!!....So when the lovely people at Baker Days asked if we would like to review a 'Letterbox Cake' for them there was no way I could refuse...

Bakerdays is a website that makes personalised cakes for any occasion their specialty being 'letterbox cakes' which they send and they fit through your letter box meaning no waiting in for the postman!!

Choosing the cake... 

This was hard....There is a cake for just about everything you could think of (over 500 designs) and if you can't find one you like you can personalise it with one of your own photo's and add words of your choice...

There are so many options...

Letterbox Gift Cake £14.99 - 4-5 portions.
Small Party Cake £24.99 - 8-10 portions.
Medium Party Cake £35.00 - 20-30 portions.
Large Party Cake £45.00 - 50-60 portions.

There are different recipes to choose from too...

Sponge Cake, Carrot Cake, Fruit Cake, Double Chocolate Chip Cake & Gluten and Wheat Free Cake!!

We chose Carrot Cake and waited for it to arrive....Which only took two days....I ordered it about 5pm Tuesday and it came Thursday which I think was very quick!!

When the postman came I head a thud and went running (I only run when cake is involved)....I was dying to get it open and see if it had survived!! It had!! Which I knew it would but I was still quite surprised....

The packaging was brilliant! I was very impressed with the strong box the goodies came in and inside the box a beautiful tin containing the cake (which I will be keeping and using for something else), a card saying 'Enjoy your Cake' & a few balloons, candles & party blowers which I wasn't expecting which is a nice little extra touch...Very thoughtful indeed!! 

So onto the cake!!

When opening the tin it had a lovely little paper tab to make it easy to get out...Which I think was a great help and it was covered in a cellophane wrapping...

The cake it's self looked lovely!! Not the biggest of cakes but as a quirky little gift for someone it is great....We managed 4 slices of it....Which was just enough for a piece each!!  There was just the right amount of icing....Not to thick or thin & I was surprised in how moist it was.....I don't know why but I expected it dry but it wasn't!!

Can you tell the girls enjoyed it :) 

I have someones birthday coming up soon who lives quite a bit away from me and I will be sending one of these cakes....I am really impressed with everything about the service, the choice of cake, the packaging & the cake it's self!! I can highly recommend BakerDays!!

Too Posh To Push?!

We've all heard the phrase that a mum is 'Too posh to push' but Kirstie Allsopp has called the label 'unfair' and says the obsession with natural birth can cause mums 'huge distress'

Kirstie Allsopp says...

“The current obsession with how a baby is born and fed can lead to huge distress on the part of women who feel that they have failed to give birth “naturally” or are unable to breastfeed.

Nationally, 25 per cent of babies are now born by caesarean, up from nine per cent in 1980. Partly this can be explained by more older mother giving birth and more obese mothers  both which increase the chance of needing a caesarean. NHS statistics show the proportion of planned caesareans has actually dropped slightly since 1980, from 44 to 40 per cent.

I have had two caesareans....I am not too posh to push!! Even though I've been told I was with Ellie by certain people...I didn't feel like a failure either because I didn't have a natural birth...

With Becky two days before my due date my midwife discovered she was breech (head up instead of down) so they decided it was for the best to have a caesarean and with Ellie all the way through my pregnancy I was told Ohh yes she's breech you'll need a caesarean.....Until I went for the final check up at 37 weeks and they decided to do one last scan...She was the right way up for a normal delivery....They said then I had the option to have a normal delivery but as I'd mentally prepared myself for another caesarean there was no pressure so another caesarean it was....

Having a caesarean is NOT the easy option!!!

With Ellie they took over an hour to get the needle into my spine to numb me up!!

While on the operating table the spinal wore off just after Ellie was born and I could feel them closing me back up!! Not nice!!!

The after affects of the spinal meant I shook so much I couldn't hold Ellie until about two hours after she was born...

Now 5 and a half years later my lower stomach still has areas on it which have no feeling and my back causes me a lot of problems!!

If I could go back now I would of tried a natural labour with Ellie only because of the after affects of the caesarean.... It is not the easy option!! 

I think it really does not matter how a baby is born as long as the mother and baby are ok!!

Chem C500 Science Kit - Review

Did you know that National Science & Engineering week starts on Friday!!

No? 

Neither did I until I received an e-mail from the good people at Crafts 4 Kids asking if we (Becky, Ellie & myself) would like to review one of their Science kits....We jumped at the chance!!

A science kit is something I would never of thought of buying my girls....I think of Science as more for boys....But after today I can admit I was so wrong....Science is as much for girls as it is for boys....My two girls Becky 10 and Ellie 5 had a great time with the Chem C500.....

Chem C500 from award winning Thames & Kosmos is a great starter chemistry set for children...The kit covers topics such as acids & alkalis, liquids & gas, electric current, and chemical compounds....It is accompanied by a 32 page manual that gives simple instructions for setting up and performing each experiment and then clear explanations of what happened and why. It is recommend for ages 10+ and does require adult supervision......

When I first opened the box....I did think is that it? There didn't seem a lot too the kit at all but when you start using it you do realise there is no need to have 10 test tubes, 100's of tubes of chemicals and lots of things you may never use...There is enough chemicals in there to keep a beginner entertained for quite a while....

Included is...Litmus powderand bottle for making litmus solution, Potassium ferrocyanid, Ferric ammonium sulfate, Sodium carbonate, Citric acid, Amber glass bottle, 3 test tubes, Metal measuring spoon, 2 plastic dropper pipettes, Rubber stopper, Safety goggles, Plastic lid opener, Clip for 9-volt battery.

 

The experiments were explained very well in the instruction booklet and Becky who's 10 had no problem understanding what to do!!

We went through the booklet and did quite a lot of the experiments and I was quite amazed at some of them....I didn't know what was going to happen when we added water to Sodium Carbonate & Tartaric Acid...I obviously never took notice in Chemistry lesson's at school...lol

It does say only for use by children over 10 but I think as long as they are correctly supervised there should be no problems for younger children using the kit...

Ellie is five and she showed a great interest in the kit and there was no way we could test it without her....She had a go at some of the experiments too..

Chem 500 is a great introduction to basic chemistry and I think it is a good choice for children who like science but have never done science experiments at home before....Like us!! It is priced at £22.99 which I think is quite reasonable....

After today I will definitely be buying more Science kits my two were learning without even realising it....

Meal Plan Monday!! #mealplanningmonday

 We're getting quite good now at meal planning and sticking to it and I have noticed the shopping bill going down as I'm only buying what we actually need and not things we might fancy and then throwing it out when it's not ate...

This week on the menu we have.... 
 

Monday -  Soup with some nice crusty bread to dip in....
Tuesday -   Chicken Jambalaya
Wednesday -  Ham, eggs, chips & beans.... 
Thursday -  Spaghetti bolognese.... 
Friday - Fish/fish fingers, new potatoes & peas....
 Saturday -  Home made burgers in a buns with Corn on the cob....
Sunday - Chicken casserole with mash & veg....
