Ellie's Story. Auditory Neuropathy. #DeafAwarenessWeek

Looking at Ellie my 9 year old you would never guess she is deaf in one ear....She just deals with it.

This week is Deaf Awareness Week and I thought I couldn't let it pass without writing something.....Sharing Ellie's story.

Ellie was born with some hearing loss in her right ear. It was discovered when we took her for the newborn hearing test....For a few years we were at the hospital every six months for more tests. They couldn't get a clear result.

We went through all the baby tests where she had the probe things put in her ears....Then the toddler ones where she had to wear headphones and they would play a noise in them and the Audiology people would note down if she responded....

Ellie was about 4 years old she was diagnosed with Auditory Neuropathy.....A pretty rare type of hearing loss where the cochlea and all the ear seems to work but there is something wrong with how the nerves work....Basically all the ear works, the nerves going to the brain work there is just a loose connection somewhere in the middle!.....My girl really does have a screw loose....hehehe

When she was a toddler she had 95% hearing loss in her right ear and it progressed....By 2014 she was totally deaf in that ear....

The specialists have mentioned to us that they could do tests....MRI scans to see where the nerves are not working and maybe find out why.....It would help with the research of the condition but the results would not make a difference to Ellie...There is no fix for her ear so I have always said no.

If she wants to be a guinea pig when she is older she can be but I'm not putting my girl through an unnecessary medical procedure! Sorry! She has had her fair share of hospital visits and stays with the problem with her eyes, ears and her heart.....If there was a chance they could restore the hearing I would have said yes but not just to aid their research.....

We have got to the point now where we only go to the hospital once every couple of years just to make sure her good ear isn't losing any of it's hearing.....It isn't so far. Phew!

There are times where Ellie struggles at school especially if there is a lot of background noise but the school is pretty good now. We did have a few issues over the years, especially at the start of a new school year where her medical information was not passed on.....I complained and they have been brilliant ever since. She is sat nearest the teacher and they make sure she hears and understands everything.

There are over 45,000 deaf children living in the UK.
90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents with little or no experience of deafness or knowledge of how to communicate with a deaf person.
Four babies are born deaf every day.
Research suggests that more than 77% of school-aged deaf children in the UK attend mainstream schools where is no specialist provision and in which they may be the only deaf child enrolled.
Deafness is not a learning disability. There is no reason why the majority of deaf children should achieve any less than hearing children.

Ellie doesn't let her deafness hold her back....To Ellie being deaf is normal. There are times when she plays on it....She only has to stick her finger in one ear when she doesn't want to listen to me and pretends she hasn't heard me when I ask her to do something. Cheeky so and so. hehehe

The Liebster Award...

The lovely Sharon who blogs at Teen Tween Toddler tagged me in the The Liebster Award....I love things like this but don't always get around to doing them when I should.... I was tagged a while ago by Tattooed Mummy too and I'm ashamed to admit I never got around to posting my answers. Better late then never!

The Liebster Award is an internet based award that is given to bloggers by other bloggers.....

What is your favourite movie?
That is so hard. It depends on what mood I am in. I would have to say it is between Dirty Dancing and Cool Runnings.

What is your least favourite food?
Green vegetables.... I can't narrow it down to just one. I am a bad example to my girls. I hate broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, celery, leeks. lol

If you had to choose only one social media to use for the rest of your life which one would you pick?
This one is easy. Twitter!! I hardly bother with the other one's. I used to be all for Facebook but not now.

Why did you start a blog?
I used to be a comper. I still am just not as much. I used to enter competitions on blogs and ended up reading them. It got to the point where I thought I want to do this too. Write down and record our lives.....

And is that still why you still blog?
Yes. To remember things about my family....I can't imagine not blogging now....

Are you a happy person?
I think I am, mostly. I have my moments when I am stressy, angry or sad but I'd say 95% of the time I am happy.....

Can you sing?
Yes, badly....lol I am not a singer. It doesn't stop me though. hehehe

Which country that you have never visited would you most like to?
Definitely America. It has everything there which I would like in a holiday. Disney, amazing food and so much to see.

What do you do to relax?
Watch Youtube, read blogs, play computer games.

Do you always take off your makeup at the end of the day?
Nope. In my defence I hardly wear make up, only for nights out. When I have a night out I usually have a little too much to drink and taking my make up off is the last thing on my mind. Sleeping is. hehehe

When was the last time you painted your nails, and what colour were they?
I can't actually remember. It will have probably been for a night out ages ago and they were probably red.

Which book(s) are reading at the moment and are they paper or digital?
I don't really read books....

11 random things about me

I have never eaten cheesecake.
I love Bon Jovi.
I have never been abroad.
I watch Neighbours (The TV show every day)
I am always the last one to go to bed in this house and the first person up in the morning.
I used to make Power tools at a Black & Decker factory...
I buy new trainers but keep going back to my old one's which are about 8 years old. lol
My favourite colour is purple.
I love medical TV shows but can't stand to see blood.
I swear far too much.
I had my ears pierced when I was 16....They lasted a week....I don't do earrings!!

I now going to tag:

My favourite sandwiches.

Did you know that this week is British Sandwich Week?

It is thought that the sandwich was invented by John Montague, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He was a keen gambler and didn’t like to leave the gaming table so rather than breaking for dinner while the game was in full swing, he asked that he was brought some meat between two slices of bread and this was the birth of a great fast food which became known as a sandwich......

What a clever man he was.....Most days I have sandwiches for lunch....They are just easy to make and are enough to fill me up until tea time.

Hot Roast Pork, Stuffing & Apple Sauce.
These always taste the best off vans at concerts, fairs or markets. I have tried to make them at home but they are just not the same.

Egg and salad cream.
Sliced egg and salad cream....Not mayonnaise. I do like mayo but not with egg.

Chocolate spread and sliced banana's.
This is one of my girls favourites too....So wrong but so right.

Ham & pickle.
It has to be Branston pickle though. I do scrimp on some things but Branston is not one of those things...

Bacon.
I have a bacon sandwich at least twice a week. It has to be fried bacon in soft, sliced white bread with lots of tomato sauce on.....

Tuna Sub from Subway.
Without the lettuce though....hehehe

Ham & Crisps.
I have to use two packets of crisps and mix them. Worcester sauce and a meaty flavour like chicken or beef then put them on the bread and ham.

Prawn Mayonnaise.
Prawns, mayonnaise and avocado slices with a squeeze of lemon on brown bread. Delicious!

Fish fingers & baked beans.
It may sound a bit disgusting but I love it....I find just fish fingers a bit dry even with butter and sauce....The beans just add a bit of moistness.

Corned beef and tomato sauce.
So simple but so good. I only have it when my fella is home though. I can never open corned beef tins without cutting myself. lol

What is your favourite sandwich filling?

Our Weekly Meal Plan!! - #mealplanningmonday

Last weeks meal plan went well.....We ate everything apart from the chicken salad.....It didn't feel like a salad day. It felt more like winter so I made a curry with the leftover chicken. Obviously by the time tea time rolled around the sun was shining....lol

At the weekend I didn't get much shopping....The freezer and cupboards are over flowing so I thought I would have a cheap week.

This week on the menu we have:

Monday - Chicken kiev's with new potatoes and sweetcorn....
Wednesday - Sausage, chips and beans....
Thursday Prawn fried rice....
Friday - Pizza....
Saturday - Burgers in buns with fries....
Sunday - Pie, mash & veg....

What are you eating this week?
