I never set out to be the nosy neighbour but I do like to know what's going on outside, especially on my street. I've always been a little nosy but during the lockdowns I got even nosier Then things happened and we got a security camera. Now, I am fully invested in the lives of the people on my street and I don’t even know most of their names.
It started innocently enough. I wanted a security camera to keep an eye on my house for safety reasons. What I didn’t expect was that my camera would provide me with the best reality TV show that I didn't even know that I needed!
One of my favourite things to watch is the early morning rush. Parents ushering their little darlings to school. There’s people who are always running late, hurrying their kids into cars, forgetting things like school bags, a lunchboxes. There are little one's running away from their parents, chasing after dogs and whizzing off on their bikes and running riot.
There's a neighbour who sits in his car for about 20 minutes before he leaves for work. I have no idea why he just sits there but I imagine he’s scrolling through his phone, sipping his coffee and contemplating his life choices. lol
If you think your street is boring, get a security camera because trust me, stuff happens and it's so interesting!
There's the neighbourhood cat who does make me chuckle. He comes out every day just after 3pm waiting for the kids coming home from school hoping to be stroked. It is very clever and if he does get stroked he will follow the person for a little bit and then run back to it's spot. I've seen it try to jump in the back of cars or delivery vans and it has an awful habit on sitting under cars that are parked up, I do fear for it's safety sometimes.
One of the more intriguing sights my camera has uncovered is a mystery individual who walks past my house at around the same time every single night. Hood up with a plate of food in his hands, every night!! Where has he been to get the food? Who cooks it for him? What's on the plate?
I always thought to myself that I never see my neighbours getting a food shop either delivered or carrying bags in from their cars but it turns out everyone gets a food shop. hehehe There's the fancy family up the road who get Ocado or Waitrose every week and there's always supermarket delivery vans whizzing about. I love having a nosy and seeing what people bring in with their food shops.
The funniest time to watch my security camera is when the weather is bad. Parents trying to hurry their kids along in the rain, people slip sliding on ice and bin day is extremely entertaining when it is windy out and the bins have blown open and fallen over! There's rubbish everywhere and blowing about.
I have found the camera fantastic for catching people doing things that they shouldn't. I am always spotting delivery people walking over my grass and when I tell them not to they said they didn't! Little liars. The camera is also great for when they say they came at a certain time to say they tried to deliver a parcel but the camera footage shows different.
I like to pretend that I check the camera footage purely for security purposes but if I’m being brutally honest it has become a guilty pleasure. Watching the daily dramas, the comedy of everyday life and the tiny mundane moments that are all weirdly fascinating.
Do you have a security camera? Have you seen any interesting sights?
No I don't have that and if I got one, I'd be paranoid and watch it constantly.
ReplyDeleteThis post cracked me up! I'm a nosy neighbor as well, and I have one across the street. I've appreciated her efforts a lot this last year, trust me!
ReplyDeleteLoved reading this post! We have a doorbell camera but it never picks up anything as exciting as yours does!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I could see becoming completely invested in checking out the footage constantly!! Several of us neighbors know each other and will report when we see funny or unusual things on the street.
ReplyDeleteThis was so funny! My computer desk looks out onto the street, and I like watching what's going on as I blog/read blogs.
ReplyDeleteHaha! This was such a fun read. Now I wish we had a security camera — it would save me from spending ages scrolling through streaming services trying to find something decent to watch!
ReplyDeleteThis post is hilarious!! I had no idea what you can see so many things outside your own front door. Thank you for sharing these stories with us. I might get a security camera too... 😁
ReplyDeleteAhh-hahahahaha, how hilarious! I live in an apartment building so can't have my own personal security camera. But on my side of the building, I have a fantastic third floor view of the storage units across the road, the one old dude who lives in a single house on that property, and the seed and grain business across the adjoining street. I could tell you stories. Heh-heh. I could also tell stories about the old ladies in this building (our apartment building is for ages 55+). Dang, I never knew old ladies could act like durn toddlers or high schoolers... so much gossip and lying about other tenants. Let me roll my eyes for the thousandth time. LOL! Loved this post, Kim! I'm going to add you to my blog list!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Love this. Get you having a nosy. I might watch ours a bit as well lol! We used to have some right goings on when we lived on the canal. I could write a book.
ReplyDeleteThe 'fancy family' cracked me up! 😂 xx
This is funny. Your street sounds much more interesting than ours. We have a camera, mainly to watch for deliveries, as our gate defeats some drivers. Apart from dog walkers and joggers, it's a bit dull, especially now I've heard about your camera!
ReplyDeleteMy close is not so interesting. I do have a camera but it's a bit boring. I did catch Graham sneaking out at 3am a couple of times when he was still living here. I also know were to get weed from but I'm not interested in that, lol. We also have a cat that knows how to get her fuss, she likes it when I get my food shopping and sees it as a chance to sneak in my house my while everyone is busy bringing the shopping in. My cats don't like her though but she has managed to wolf down half a bowl of their food before being caught. There are a lot of food vans from everywhere (Iceland seems popular!) We are the posh ones with Sainsburys, lol. But no, I'm not a nosey neighbour...errr! How do I know all that? I wish I could tap into a camera in the next street, from the noise they have a lot more action!
ReplyDeleteI could easily see getting hooked. That being said just ask the men in this neighborhood. You always here about the old grannies that know everything. Ask one of the male neighbors and they know more about what people are doing than is healthy for anyone.
ReplyDeleteYour post reminds me of how much I enjoy people watching! Sometime we go to an event jus so I can sit on the sidelines and watch the people and how they interact! Thanks for the smile your post put on my face, Kim!
