The Wednesday Hodgepodge #52

I hope you are all having a good week. It's Wednesday, which means it's time to join in with the Wednesday Hodgepodge with Joyce who blogs at From This Side of the Pond! Each week there are 6 questions, we answer and then link up. Simple!

The Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. April 22nd is Earth Day...what's the most 'out of this world' place on earth you've ever visited? Tell us something about it.

I’m actually quite boring when it comes to travelling. I don’t really go anywhere but the most "out of this world" trip I’ve had was spending Christmas in a hotel with my family, my dad and his partner. It just felt really different from the usual Christmas at home. Everything was already done, the decorations were up, there was no stress about cooking or cleaning and it felt like I was stepping into a Christmas film for a few days.

2. A favorite quote, verse, or song lyric with the word earth in it?

The first thought I had for this was Earth Song by Michael Jackson, I used to love that song and the music video which went with it but thought that was too obvious! I found a few quotes which did make me smile:

Be like Earth: keep spinning even when nobody appreciates the effort.
You are allowed to grow slowly. Earth took billions of years and still isn’t finished.
If Earth can survive asteroids, you can survive that awkward email you sent.
When life feels heavy, remember Earth is literally carrying oceans on its back and still showing up daily.

3. What's the most trivial thing about which you have a strong opinion?

The TV volume! It is never right! One minute someone’s whispering like they’re sharing a big secret and the next minute it’s like the whole soundtrack is trying to blow the windows out. When I am watching some shows, it feels like I am a sound engineer, constantly turning it up then down! While I am on about the volume on the TV, it has to be on an even number. Odd numbers just feel wrong.

4. What's your most commonly used kitchen utensil or tool? What's the last thing you made using that tool?

Tongs

I bought some tongs a few years ago and they are the most used thing in my kitchen. I got a pack of 5 or 6 purely to get things out of the air fryer but now I use them with everything like the George Foreman grill, turning things over in pans and they have saved me from burning myself many times while using the air fryer. I last used them to make the red onion and bacon tart. They are great for turning the bacon over in the pan and scooping the red onions out of the pan to put on the pastry.

5. Marilyn (Memphis Bridges) gave me a great book of 3000 questions, and I'm going to try to use one in our Hodgepodge every week. Here is today's - What is your greatest extravagance?

My biggest extravagance is definitely takeaways but not just the obvious ones, like pizza, Chinese food or fish and chips. It’s the random shop sandwiches for lunch when I could’ve easily made something at home but didn’t. It’s picking up a sausage roll when I’m out, even though I wasn’t even hungry five minutes earlier but I could smell them coming from the shop. It’s the fancy coffee drinks which are like a reward for getting something done. All these little food decisions add up and I never seem to learn.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

If my eldest could have a break from bringing colds and germs home from work that would be great. I came down with a cold that I caught from her over the weekend. Thankfully, I didn't feel too ill. It was more the inconvenience from my runny nose and not sleeping as much as I would have liked but that worked out well. I was snotty and sneezing, dosed up with cold and flu tablets and felt wide awake, which meant I stayed up both nights to watch Wrestlemania. If I had been feeling well I would not have stayed up both nights but sick me thought I was going to be awake anyway, so I might as well. I am feeling much better now and can at least breathe through my nose properly again.

  1. Kitchen tongs are a good one! I forgot about those...I hope you get to feeling better soon. UGH to feeling poorly and being congested. I hope that Wrestlemania was exciting for you even if you weren't feeling 100%.

  2. Oh yes, we use our kitchen tongs often too; I hadn't had a pair for ages and ages and now I reach for them all the time. They do come in so handy. Hearing your plea about your daughter/germs reminds me of how my husband felt when I worked in day care. I didn't catch much when it was going around but always brought the germs home to "share" with him... completely unintentionally of course.

  3. I've never spent Christmas in a hotel or 'on holiday' although I've had a lot of Christmases not in my own home. I am curious how I would like going somewhere tropical for the holidays. My hubs and I talk about doing that one year when our kids are with in-laws. I like your earth memes, especially the one about sending that email : ) I hope you're feeling better!

  4. Yes food can be an extravagance- I totally get that. Those tongs were a close second for me! Use them every day!

  5. Those tongs look so useful and I may need to get a better pair of tongs. I hope you feel better!

  6. You are so right about the tv volume. It always gets louder on ads!
I use my kitchen tongs all the time too. I like your red ones - more fun than my plain black tongs!
I hope the cold leaves your house quickly!

  7. Oh my goodness yes! Why is the TV volume the way that it is?! Just be consistent please!

  8. Sorry about the cold! I hate when tv volume for music is so much louder than dialogue!

  9. Great answers! Yes to tongs! Duh! Love mine! Also, the tv volume. You are so right! Then, the commercials are super loud! We still watch tv with commercials sometimes.

  10. I didn't watch any Wrestlemania this year, which made me a bit sad because I've always been a huge fan. But I just don't make time for it anymore. I do miss watching it though, and I do acknowledge my tribal chief. LOL

  11. That would be an out of this world experience to enjoy Christmas in a hotel instead of at home. I like the 'be like earth' keep spinning quote! Tongs are a great tool! I had the sneezy snotty thing, too. Glad you are feeling better now. I am, too. I want a sausage roll. Have a beautiful day.

  12. Kitchen tongs was my third choice.. hee hee! Spatula was my second. I chose a strainer.
I hope you are feeling better. I was sick last Thursday - Saturday. Boo!

  13. My husband is "in charge" of the remote (simply because he likes to be and I could care less) and he mutes the TV during any commercial. Most of our streaming services are now ad free which helps, but that drives me crazy. I didn't think of this until I read your answer about the TV volume!
Kitchen tongs are a good choice!!

  14. I had to go watch the MJ earth video and it was sad. It made me think of the movie Soylent Green with Charleston Heston. So, you had a Hallmark Christmas? How fun! I sure hope you get well soon!

  15. Kim, I almost used Michael's Earth Song, too!! And LOL because I also only do even volumn numbers on the TV. Odd numbers are just odd!! Eating out (or take away) is an extravagance that I need to curb a bit. It's easy to justify it by saying it's just for me. I cook and then eat it for three days. Except I usually throw away what's left after the second day. Waste is as extravagant too. Sigh. Glad you are feeling better!! I am too. Another interesting Hodgepodge from Joyce!

  16. I love your Earth quotes and will definitely be inspired by them next time I'm struggling with something hard. Also, yes, yes, yes to the TV volume. Why can't it just be consistent?!?!?!?!

  17. Great earth quotes you shared! I like a quote that's thought-provoking and also humorous, like the one about the earth showing up every day.
I like the little extravagances like eating out or just grabbing a coffee or snack while I'm out even though I could easily have gone home.
Hope you all get feeling better and stay healthy! Have a great week!
