British TV that shaped my childhood!

There are certain sounds that will forever live rent-free in my head. The thud thud thud of Contenders ready? Gladiators ready? The little trumpet jingle of Blue Peter and that eerie theme tune from Knightmare that made my living room feel like it had suddenly been transported to a haunted castle. Growing up in Britain, TV wasn’t just something we watched it raised us, entertained us and occasionally scarred us for life. These are some of the TV shows that shaped my childhood.

Blue Peter!

If you grew up in the UK, there’s a 99% chance you’ve tried and failed to make something with sticky back plastic because Blue Peter told you it was so easy. Blue Peter was like an after-school club on TV. You got crafts, pets (I loved the tortoises) and you got presenters who felt like your slightly cooler older brothers or sisters and let’s not forget the Blue Peter badge. That tiny piece of plastic was basically childhood royalty. If you had one, you could stroll into theme parks and museums for free, which in kid currency was priceless.

Knightmare!

Knightmare was a fever dream of a TV show and I still can’t believe it actually existed. You’d get this poor kid shoved in a giant horned helmet so they couldn’t see a thing, then their mates had to guide them through a medieval dungeon full of dodgy CGI monsters. The graphics were not good when you look back now but it was terrifying at the time. I was always shouting at the screen because the kid was about to walk straight into a pit of fire! It was basically the 80s and 90s version of a video game but on the TV and way more stressful.

Byker Grove!

This was meant to be a cool, gritty show for teens but most of us were watching it years before we were anywhere near the age of the characters. It felt grown up. The storylines were heavy with bullying, relationships, even drugs but the one that made everyone gasp was the infamous paintball incident. Poor PJ getting blinded!

Gladiators!

Saturday nights were never boring when Gladiators was on. Forget Marvel superheroes, we had Jet, Hunter and of course, Wolf, the pantomime villain who made kids either terrified or obsessed. The whole thing was way over the top. The giant cotton bud battles or Duel if we’re being proper, were everyone’s favourite. Two grown adults smacking each other while balanced on a podium. That’s quality television right there and the Eliminator course which I always wanted a go at!

Fun House!

No childhood TV list is complete without Fun House. The slime, the games, the mullet were iconic but the real dream was the go-karts. Every kid watching just wanted a go on them. The Fun House itself was basically every child’s fantasy playground, filled with ball pits, foam and prizes that were usually a Walkman or a mountain bike.

Animals of Farthing Wood!

If you know, you know. This animated show was supposedly for kids but it was more like a crash course in heartbreak. The series followed woodland animals trying to survive and reach a new home and along the way, well, let’s just say things happened. Disturbing, emotional, hide behind the cushion things. Whole generations were left sobbing over foxes and hedgehogs.

The Generation Game!

This was family TV at its finest. Bruce Forsyth was the master of cheesy jokes and audience banter and the games were always chaotic. Watching people try to make pottery in 60 seconds or dance with complete strangers was pure comedy and let’s not forget the conveyor belt finale, always with a cuddly toy!

Saturday Morning Chaos - Live & Kicking, SMTV: Live and Going Live!

Saturday mornings were something special. Forget sleeping in you had to be up early for Live & Kicking, Going Live or SMTV: Live. Between phone in competitions, celebrity interviews and sketches that were organised chaos, it was the perfect start to the weekend! Ant & Dec on SMTV: Live was comedy gold. “Wonky Donkey” still lives in my brain rent-free.

Nowadays, kids have all the streaming services where everything is on demand but there was something magical about sitting down as a family or rushing home from school to catch a show before tea.

Share Our Lives: Binge worthy shows!

It's that time of the month again to share some of my life and join in with the other Share Our Lives bloggers. This month the prompt is: Binge Worthy Shows!

Binge worthy shows are the main reason my armchair has permanent imprints in the shape of my backside. lol There’s something so comforting about getting lost in a series, ignoring the world outside and telling yourself you’ll just watch one more episode which somehow turns into an entire season. I could write a list of the best TV shows to binge watch and I know I have mentioned plenty in the past but I am going to go with something different and share what makes a TV show binge worthy to me!

Getting hooked from the start!

If the first episode doesn’t grab me within the first half hour the chances of me turning off are high. Life is too short to watch TV shows which don't have me hooked from the beginning! I need to be invested from the opening scene, whether it’s a mystery that immediately has me questioning things, a dramatic twist that makes me gasp or a character that I instantly love or love to hate! Some of my best binge watching memories are from shows that had me completely hooked in the first episode. I remember the first time I watched Breaking Bad, I was glued to the screen within minutes trying to figure out what would happen next.

Characters I actually care about!

A show can have the most stunning scenes or the cleverest plot twists but if the characters don’t make me feel something, I’m done. I need to feel love, hate, pity, amusement, just something! If I don’t care whether they live or die, I’m not sticking around for six seasons. Take Gilmore Girls. I can rewatch episodes over and over because the characters feel like real people. You grow with them, cheer them on, get frustrated with them and by the end of a show you feel like you know them!

Cliffhangers that torment me!

I have a love hate relationship with cliffhangers. I love them because they make it impossible to stop watching but I hate them because they can ruin a good night’s sleep. Nothing makes me press next episode faster than an "Oh no they didn’t" moment at the end of an episode. Season 6 of The Walking Dead had a huge cliffhanger which had me shouting at the TV and I was so annoyed that I had to wait for months to see who lived and died.

Pacing that makes me forget time exists!

Some shows drag and make every episode feel like a chore but binge worthy shows know how to pace themselves. I remember watching Stranger Things for the first time. Each episode felt like it was packed with energy, mystery and just enough going on to keep me interested. By the end of the first season, I realised I hadn’t done anything else that entire weekend but I didn’t even mind. That’s the magic of good pacing: time disappears and all that matters is the story unfolding in front of you.

A world I want to live in!

Sometimes it’s about escapism. It could be the glamour of Manhattan in Sex and the City, the fantasy world of Game of Thrones or the comforting charm of a small town cafe in Gilmore Girls. I want a place I can get lost in, if only for a few hours. It's not just entertainment, it’s a little escape from real life. I can laugh, cry, gasp and cheer without leaving my sofa.

What I have loved this week! Week 6. #FridayFavourites

Happy Friday! I usually start writing this blog post mid-week and finish it off on a Thursday but this week I started on Sunday as I already had a couple of things that I loved and then I realised most of them were TV shows and movies, so this week's favourites has a theme. I am of course linking up with Erika and Andrea today to share the things which I have loved from the past week.

The Beast in Me - Netflix!

The Beast in Me is a psychological thriller about a grieving author, Aggie Wiggs who becomes obsessed with her new neighbour, Nile Jarvis, a wealthy mogul suspected of murdering his first wife, leading to a dangerous, seductive game of cat and mouse as she investigates him for a book while confronting her own inner darkness and loss.

I saw so many people recommend this and binged it over a couple of days. Part of what pulled me in was spotting Mike off Breaking Bad. His character in The Beast In Me gave off the same energy! It’s dark, tense, and one of those shows that quietly messes with your head while you’re watching it. It's not an easy watch, not one for everyone but if you enjoy Netflix thrillers, this one’s worth a go.

His and Hers - Netflix!

Two estranged spouses, one a detective and the other a news reporter, vie to solve a murder in which each believes the other is a prime suspect.

Another show where one of the lead characters pulled me in, Shayne off The Walking Dead! It’s one of those shows where you think you know what’s going on and then you don’t. It keeps flipping things around so you’re never fully on anyone’s side and I spent a lot of it talking to the TV screen saying, Yeah, I don’t trust you! The last 20 minutes were shocking and amazing! I did not see that ending coming at all!!

Responsible Child - Netflix

A British factual drama based on a true story that follows 12-year-old Ray, who stands trial for murdering his mother’s abusive boyfriend. The film explores the complexities of the UK legal system, questioning whether a child should be tried as an adult. It highlights the contrast between the brutal crime and Ray’s chaotic home life, exploring themes of abuse, trauma, and criminal responsibility.

I stuck Responsible Child on thinking I’d half-watch it and then suddenly I was fully invested and a bit emotionally wrecked. Watching a child be treated like a full-on adult in a legal system just felt wrong and I kept thinking how confusing and scary that must be when you’re that young. Everyone around him seemed so quick to decide who he was, like one bad moment cancelled out everything else about him. I kept asking myself what the right outcome even was and there wasn’t one that felt good. It’s not an easy watch but it’s one of those shows that makes you stop and think long after it’s finished.

Harlen Corban's Run Away - Netflix!

The drama follows investment banker Simon Greene as he frantically searches for his runaway, drug-addicted daughter, Paige. His investigation plunges him into a dangerous underworld, where dark secrets and violent truths threaten to shatter his seemingly perfect life. Along the way, Simon uncovers Paige’s hidden connections, including a mysterious young man named Aaron and confronts shocking revelations about his own family.

I was hooked, there were secrets, lies, twists everywhere! I thought I had it all figured out and then nope, totally wrong. James Nesbitt as the dad was a legend. He made you actually care about the mess his family was in! It’s dramatic, tense, it keeps you watching and even when it did get a bit confusing it was still fun! Ruth Jones is brilliant in it too. She makes you pay attention and every time she appeared I found myself thinking, she’s onto something here!

The Apprentice UK - BBC1

I’ve been watching The Apprentice again, it's in it's 20th year and still with Lord Alan Sugar fronting it. It’s like a social experiment where they lock a group of very confident people in a room and remove all common sense. It started with a task in Hong Kong where 20 new contestants were split into two teams and were sent out to grab nine items at bargain prices. A scavenger hunt of sorts and they got lost, couldn't find what they were looking for and struggled with negotiating. It of course made brilliant TV! I have no business knowledge or a fancy suit but know I could do better. Hehehe

Independence Day - Disney+

An alien race destroys major cities of the world with their advanced weaponry. However, a geek, a pilot, the US President and a group of ragtag survivors unite to save mankind from annihilation.

An oldie but a goodie! That film isn’t just a movie to me, it’s a full childhood memory! My brother somehow got his hands on a VHS copy right when it was still out at the cinema, which at the time felt very illegal. We watched it over and over until the tape went funny. I watched it over the weekend because I wanted something familiar and easy to watch but I don’t need the screen any more, I still almost know it word for word! Will Smith punching an alien, Welcome to Earth and dragging it through the desert is still amazing. Every time Bill Pullman starts that speech, my brain switches to autopilot and mouths along and Randy Quaid flying into the spaceship. Hello boys, I’m baaaack. It is unhinged but brilliant!

What I have been watching on TV lately!

Lately I’ve been on an absolute roll with my TV watching. I’ve dipped into a bit of everything: twisty thrillers, Christmas movies and those reality shows that are pure chaos but you can’t look away. So I thought I'd round up a few favourites I’ve been loving and would recommend if you’re looking for something new to binge without too much commitment.

Squid Game: The Challenge - Season 2!

Inspired by the TV series Squid Game, real life contestants compete in a series of high stakes children's games in pursuit of a $4.56 million cash prize. Their strategies will be put to the test, while competitors are eliminated around them.

If you’ve watched Squid Game: The Challenge you’ll know it’s one of those shows that has you shouting at the TV one minute and sat there in shock because one of your favourites has been eliminated. The contestants this time are such a mix. Some are absolute stars and others feel like they accidentally wandered in while looking for the toilets. The alliances, the whispering the dramatic pacing around is just brilliant! The games are of course fantastic and had me glued to the screen. I got way too invested in people making terrible strategic choices, it wasn't quite as intense as Season 1 and I did not like how it ended but it is still great reality TV!

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox!

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is a series that follows American exchange student Amanda Knox after she is wrongfully accused and convicted of the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in Italy. The plot traces her long journey of wrongful imprisonment, multiple trials, and eventual exoneration, highlighting the investigation, the misinterpretation of evidence and events, and the intense public and media scrutiny she faced.

I got totally sucked in to The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. It’s one of those shows that makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of what is going on. I found myself flipping between feeling sorry for Amanda and frustrated with her choices. One moment it’s almost playful, the next it’s seriously dark! It was dramatic, intense and thought provoking in a way I wasn’t expecting.

Freakier Friday!

In Freakier Friday, 22 years after the original body swap, Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) and her mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) find themselves in another magical identity crisis, but this time it also affects Anna's daughter Harper and her soon-to-be stepsister Lily.

This wasn't as good as the first movie, Freaky Friday but I still enjoyed it. The four way body swap is bonkers, the grandma in teen body is weird but in a good way and Jamie Lee Curtis is of course fantastic! There are sweet moments about family, identity and aging. You just sit back and enjoy the ridiculous situations. For me it was the perfect Sunday afternoon movie.

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!

A group of celebrities living together in the jungle in uncomfortable conditions with few creature comforts. Each member undertakes challenges to secure additional food and treats for the group and to avoid being voted out by viewers during their stay.

I love it! This season of I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! is exactly as it is every year: funny, chaotic and cruel to the celebs. hehehe The trials are as gross and this is probably my favourite year ever as I know and like all of the celebs! Even Ellie is watching because she knows most of them too. My favourites this year are Angry Ginge who’s hilarious and Ruby Wax is just her brilliant self. Jack Osbourne has had me crying when he was talking about my dad, bless him and Ant & Dec are doing their usual thing which is fun. It’s addictive, full of laughs and my only complaint is that it doesn't start until 9pm which makes for a late bed time.

All Her Fault!

A thriller about a mother, Marissa who arrives to pick up her son Milo from a playdate only to find he's been kidnapped by a woman who denies ever meeting her. The story follows the ensuing investigation with suspicion falling on several women connected to the incident in their wealthy suburb. As panic and rumours spread the narrative explores the secrets within the community, questioning who is truly at fault for the child's disappearance.

All Her Fault hits hard from the first episode. I ended up really liking it way more than I expected, it’s one of those shows that pulls you in straight away and suddenly you’re three episodes deep. It was tense without being too heavy and I loved how it kept me guessing without making me feel like I needed a detective’s notebook. Definitely one of those series where you finish an episode and instantly want someone to talk about it with.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas!

All Kate and Everett want for Christmas is an amicable divorce and one last holiday as a family, but new flames and old feelings complicate their plans.

A Merry Little Ex-Mas ended up being such a fun watch and I went into it expecting something light but it actually had a nice bit of heart to it too. It’s predictable in the best way with all the usual Christmas movie things happening but it never feels dull. It’s one of those films that makes you smile, cringe and root for the characters all at once.

The best TV shows to binge in Autumn and why!

Autumn is my favourite time of year for TV. The nights draw in, it’s suddenly acceptable to put the heating on and staying home feels less like being boring and more like a lifestyle choice. There’s nothing better than grabbing a blanket, making a hot drink and losing yourself in a good binge. If you’re anything like me sometimes you waste half the night scrolling through Netflix, Prime, Disney+ trying to pick something, then before you know it, you’ve watched nothing except trailers and spent 40 minutes saying I'm not in the mood for that. So I thought I’d share my go to list of shows that feel perfect for autumn. Cosy, spooky, funny there’s a bit of everything here.

Gilmore Girls!

I couldn’t not start with Gilmore Girls. It’s the autumn show. The coffee, the jumpers, the leaves on the ground in Stars Hollow it just feels right for this time of year. It’s comfort TV at its finest with quirky characters, small town charm and witty banter. Even if you’ve already seen it, it’s the kind of show you can rewatch and still love. I don’t think autumn officially starts until I’ve watched at least one Gilmore Girls episode. At the moment I am on Season 4 and will watch the rest of it before Christmas.

Bridgerton!

Another good one for autumn nights. Romance, drama and more scandal than you can keep up with. Plus the costumes are amazing. It's very easy to get hooked and great to watch now before the new episodes in January!

Stranger Things!

If you’re in the mood for something with a bit of a spooky edge, Stranger Things is a winner. It’s got that proper Halloween feel with kids on bikes, eerie music, weird stuff happening in small towns. It’s creepy but also funny and full of heart. There's the nostalgia, the jump scares and enough suspense to keep you on edge of your seat. Perfect for October nights when you want something thrilling but not so terrifying you won’t sleep. I read last week that if you start watching from the first episode around now and watch one episode a day you will be ready for the new episodes on the 26th of November!

The Great British Bake Off!

Bake Off is autumn comfort TV at its best. There’s something magical about watching people stress over pastry while you’re sat on the sofa with a cup of tea and a packet of biscuits. It’s light, it’s funny and it makes you feel warm and cosy inside. You might even get the urge to bake afterwards.

Downton Abbey!

Autumn evenings were made for period dramas! When the nights are long and you just want to escape into another world, Downton is perfect. It’s all about the drama, the posh accents and those big country houses. Plus it’s one of those shows that pulls you in before you know it, suddenly it’s midnight and you’re fully invested in whether someone downstairs has messed up the silver polishing.

Call the Midwife!

Wholesome, emotional and just the right amount of drama. One minute you’re crying and the next you’re smiling. It’s perfect for those evenings when you want something heartfelt but not too heavy. Plus it’s got that cosy, nostalgic feel that just works in autumn.

Wednesday!

If you like your autumn TV with a darker twist Wednesday is a brilliant choice. It’s gothic, funny and has just the right amount of spookiness for this time of year. Perfect to watch in October but honestly it works all season long.

The Crown

If you fancy something a bit more serious, The Crown is worth a binge. It’s dramatic, beautifully filmed and has that just one more episode pull. You don’t have to be a massive royal fan to enjoy it either, the acting is so good it just draws you in. Definitely one for those longer autumn evenings when you want something to get stuck into.

Doctor Who!

Autumn always feels like the perfect time for Doctor Who. The mix of time travel, aliens and heart warming stories means it’s a show you can dip in and out of or fully binge. And because there are so many episodes, you’ll never run out.

My thoughts on the Great British Bake Off! (No spoilers)

I had most of this blog post written expecting to schedule it later on in the month when The Great British Bake Off usually starts and then forgot about it until the other day. The TV gods decided we were in for an early treat and brought The Great British Bake Off back early starting at the beginning of September. I'm not complaining though! It seems a waste to waste this blog post so you are getting it now. 

I don't watch live TV very often, I usually watch catch up but one thing I do make a point of watching as soon as it's shown on the TV is The Great British Bake Off! It is a must watch show for the Autumn months, a cosy, comfort show that somehow manages to feel like a hug, a cup of tea and a slice of cake all rolled into one. It’s not just about cakes, breads or pastries, it’s about people. It is just a nice show with no shouting, no sabotaging and no nastiness which is practically unheard of in reality TV shows now a days.

Did you know in America The Great British Bake Off is called the The Great British Baking Show? Apparently Bake Off was trademarked in America by another company so the title had to be tweaked for its international journey. It’s the same tent, the same bunting, the same Paul Hollywood giving that handshake but just under a different name. I have a confession, I love Paul Hollywood, the silver fox! He is as much a part of Bake Off as the tent itself. Part judge, part mentor, part national baking authority and part TV crush for quite a few people. I do have a soft spot for the other hosts too though, there to bring the laughs.

We have a fresh group of bakers with their own quirks, stories and styles. I have already picked my favourites after a couple of episodes but I still can't pick a winner, they're all amazing even with a few hiccups along the way.

On the first episode they had to bake a Swiss Roll, easy I thought until they started decorating them. Wow! The technical challenge was to bake something I eat all of the time, Fondant Fancies, they are a lot harder to bake than I thought. At least us being at home we can Google how to do things, they have to guess and hope. Most recently they were baking biscuits, not the simple sort of biscuits which I would bake though. The challenges seem so much harder this year. Eek! 

There is so much to love about The Great British Bake Off: The creative showstoppers. Some of them over the years have been pretty amazing. I can't even work out how they even carry them as they seem to defy gravity and logic! The comfort bakes that remind you of your nan’s kitchen and the emotional rollercoaster moments are coming with sighs of relief when something comes out of the oven perfectly, the disasters that have to be glued together with caramel and the judges tense walk around the tent as the bakers try to look calm.

Bake Off isn’t just TV, it’s a whole autumn tradition. It’s the kind of show you can watch with family, friends or just a cosy blanket and a slice of something sweet. It’s gentle enough to relax you but engaging enough to have you on the edge of your seat. So here’s to another season of kindness, cake and the cosy joy that only Bake Off can deliver.

Things I’d take with me in a zombie apocalypse!

I am a big fan of TV shows like The Walking Dead, recently I have been rewatching it and sometimes I find myself rolling my eyes and thinking they do some really stupid things. Like on when stuff first started to go wrong in the world on The Walking Dead Lori took their photo's off the walls and albums, what are they going to do when you are fighting to live? Yes, they're nice to have around but they have no practical use.

Over the years Stu and I have talked lots about what we would take with us if a zombie apocalypse happened. This is my list of what I would take with me!

A Trusty Backpack

If you don’t have a decent backpack you’re just not prepared. How else are you going to carry all your gear while running for your life? We need something sturdy with loads of compartments, it’s got to be big enough to hold everything, waterproof and comfortable to wear too! I imagine having a backpack that Bear Grylls would be proud of!

A Machete

Forget fancy swords or katanas. I’m not Michonne and I don’t have time for sword fighting lessons but a machete, that’s practical, it doesn’t run out of ammo, it’s great for close combat and it’s perfect for clearing paths through those pesky forests and bushes when you’re trying to escape. I have actually used a machete when clearing bushes when I was once at my dad's, I had great fun with it. hehehe

Water Purification Tablets

In the apocalypse it’s all about hydration! You can’t rely on bottled water forever and the tap water situation is not going to be great so water purification tablets are a must. These little lifesavers will keep you from turning into a dehydrated, zombie snack and help you make it to the next safe zone without keeling over.

Duct Tape

I swear by duct tape in everyday life so you bet it’s coming with me in the apocalypse. It’s the ultimate problem solver: need to fix your backpack? Duct tape. Got a hole in your tent? Duct tape. Need to shut up that one person who can’t stop panicking and screaming? Duct tape. I think the world could be rebuilt using just duct tape! You would be amazed at what is stuck together in my house with Duct Tape.

A First Aid Kit

It’s not all about fighting off zombies; you’ve got to keep yourself in tip top shape too. A proper first aid kit with plenty of bandages, antiseptic wipes, painkillers and maybe some super glue is non-negotiable. I am not going down because I tripped over a rock and got an infected cut. That’s just embarrassing.

Portable Solar Charger

In a world without electricity, you’ve got to harness the power of the sun! A portable solar charger will keep your essential gadgets running like your phone, (you never know, maybe there’s still Wi-Fi somewhere?), flashlight, or even a mini fan because the apocalypse will probably be a sweaty affair.

Snacks (Lots of Snacks!)

If there’s one thing I won’t compromise on it's snacks! We’re talking high calorie, non perishable goodies like energy bars, nuts, crisps and chocolate. I refuse to become a “hangry” zombie apocalypse survivor and if you end up meeting other survivors nothing bonds a group quite like sharing a bag of crisps.

A Multi-Tool

Think Swiss Army knife but better. A multi-tool is an absolute essential because it’s basically a toolbox in your pocket. Need to cut a rope? Tighten a screw? Crack open a can of beans? This little gadget does it all. 

A Comfy Hoodie

While everyone else is busy grabbing tactical gear, I’m grabbing my favourite hoodie, I already know which one. An oversized Nike one that I have had for years. It’s not just about looking cool, it’s about practicality. A good hoodie keeps you warm at night, can be used as a pillow and offers some comfort when the world’s gone to hell. Plus if I’m going to survive the apocalypse, I want to be cosy doing it. I turn into such a grump when I am cold.

A Sense of Humour

Technically this isn’t something you can pack but I’d definitely bring my sense of humour with me. If you can’t laugh at the absurdity of running from zombies while wearing a ratty old hoodie and eating stale crisps then what’s the point?

I have had another busy week and it was made even busier by my phone, it stopped working. I had to get a new one as I had a couple of phone appointments which I couldn't rearrange, I spent most of Monday afternoon setting that up. Anyway, I have some favourites to share and they are all TV and movie related as I have watched a lot of great things over the last couple of weeks. The Twister: Caught in the Storm - Netflix!

In May 2011, a massive tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri. With pulse pounding first hand footage, this documentary goes inside a deadly twister.

This was so interesting, coming from a country where we don't really have storms and tornados like this it looks terrifying seeing the recorded footage and re-enactments. 161 people died in Joplin and the city was obliterated. It was very raw, very gritty but very heartfelt. I was touched by the stories and found myself crying.

The Electric State - Netflix!

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Simon Stalenhag, the story takes place in a reimagined version of 1997. With humans isolated in their VR helmets and a continuing battle against a strange breed of monstruous drones in the wake of a technological meltdown, a teenage girl named Michelle and a robot travel the West Coast of the U.S in search of the girl's missing brother.

I imagined this was going to be a lot more serious than it was but I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. It is a good family movie with a good story. I wouldn't rush to watch it again but I still enjoyed it. It had a nice message that people need to spend more time in real life and stop relying and being addicted to technology. Ironic coming from me writing a blog post about TV shows and movies.

Glee - Disney+!

A group of ambitious misfits try to escape the harsh realities of high school by joining a glee club headed by a passionate Spanish teacher.

Over the past couple of weeks Glee is what I have had on the TV for some background noise. Can you believe that it was 10 years ago this month since the last episode aired.

Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke - Disney+!

When popular vlogger Ruby Franke is arrested for child abuse in August 2023, it quickly becomes one of the biggest trending stories in America. For years, the Frankes’ YouTube channel had documented a wholesome, happy family life, with nearly 3 million subscribers tuning in at its peak. But as the cracks began to show, the family turned to counselor Jodi Hildebrandt for guidance – and rapidly found themselves trapped in a nightmare.

I had no idea about this family until I saw TikToks about Ruby Franke being arrested and didn't really follow the news about her so this documentary was all new to me. Wow! I was shocked by it all! How twisted and evil Ruby was and that Jodi! Her husband, I just wanted to shake him and tell him to wake up what was going on! I know he was brainwashed but come on! I just hope the kids are doing OK now.

Escape from Pretoria - Netflix!

Based on the real-life prison break of two political captives, Escape From Pretoria is a race-against-time thriller set in the tumultuous apartheid days of South Africa.

This is an old movie from 2020. I only watched this as it had Daniel Radcliffe in and all of his movies and shows are good. It was so interesting for me as I didn't know much about the Apartheid movement. The suspense was built throughout and had me on the edge of my seat at some points, there was no over acting it was just a simple but good prison break movie. Daniel radcliff did an excellent job of course and proves that he is more than just Harry Potter! 

American Murder: Gabby Petito - Netflix!

A young couple's cross country van journey, documented on social media, ends in tragedy when domestic violence shatters their seemingly perfect life; their story sparks a nationwide investigation and raises questions about family loyalty.

I had heard of Gabby Petito but knew nothing about what happened to her. It was so sad to see such a beautiful young lady like Gabby have her life snatched away but the story was told with such compassion by those who lived it.

TV shows I wish I could watch again for the first time!

Have you ever watched a TV show so gripping, so heart warming or so downright hilarious that you wished you could erase your memory and experience it all over again? While rewatching has its charms, nothing compares to that first time magic! There may be spoilers ahead if you are late to watching iconic shows. Sorry!

Breaking Bad!

The transformation of Walter White from a mild mannered chemistry teacher to a ruthless drug kingpin is nothing short of extraordinary. The tension, the moral dilemmas, and the oh my god moments that left you on the edge of your seat were masterfully crafted. Experiencing Gus Fring’s icy menace, Jesse’s emotional turmoil and Walt’s descent for the first time? That’s a ride I’d take again in a heartbeat. I remember being so shocked at some of it, especially the deaths!

Broadchurch

Few shows gripped me as tightly as Broadchurch. From the haunting opening scenes to the slow mystery which spanned the whole show! I was late in watching this series and only picked up on it when the 2nd series started and amazingly managed to avoid the spoilers. I soon caught up and was completely glued to every episode. David Tennant and Olivia Colman’s performances were breath taking and the twists left me in complete shock. I want to watch again with new eyes!!

Friends!

There’s a reason Friends is a comfort show for so many people but imagine getting to experience Monica, Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe’s antics as if you’d never seen them before!! The first time laughs at pivot or Chandler’s sarcastic quips, the slow burn romance between Ross and Rachel, and Phoebe’s iconic renditions of "Smelly Cat" would feel brand new again.

Stranger Things!

When Stranger Things first premiered it was like nothing else on TV. The mix of 80s nostalgia, supernatural horror and heartfelt friendships immediately captured everyone’s imagination. Seeing Eleven flip a van with her mind or the gang face off against the Demogorgon for the first time was absolutely thrilling and don't even get me started on Max and Running Up That Hill!. Reliving the chills and thrills of the Upside Down from the very start? Yes, please!

Game of Thrones!

While the final season sparked plenty of debate the early seasons of Game of Thrones delivered some of the most shocking and compelling television ever! It took me a couple of times of watching the first couple of episodes to get into it but wow!! Experiencing Ned Stark’s fate, I did not see that coming, the Red Wedding and the moment Daenerys emerges from the flames for the first time was unforgettable. The politics and jaw dropping twists would be just as thrilling if I could somehow watch it all again with fresh eyes!

LOST!

Say what you will about the ending but Lost was amazing TV with its ambitious storytelling and deeply layered mysteries. The first time you step onto that eerie island, see the smoke monster or dive into the flashbacks that build each character’s backstory, you’re completely hooked. Trying to unravel the mysteries with no idea of what’s coming next? That’s the kind of excitement I’d love to relive. I recently rewatched it after many years and it was good but just not as good as seeing it for the first time!

Grey’s Anatomy!

Few shows do drama quite like Grey’s Anatomy. From the intense medical cases to the heart breaking relationships, the first time viewing experience is a whirlwind of emotions. Watching Meredith and Derek’s romance unfold or figuring out who 007 was, gasping at that plane crash, would hit just as hard if I could go back and see it all again!

The best TV specials over Christmas!

There’s nothing quite like gathering around the telly with a steaming mug of hot chocolate and a plate of mince pies during the Christmas season when all the TV shows go all out and have their Christmas specials. This year the festive line up looks great that promises laughs, drama and all the warm, fuzzy feels!

The Great British Bake Off: Christmas Special!

No Christmas is complete without a visit to the Bake Off tent. This year’s festive special is hosting a soap reunion, welcoming Dean Gaffney, Sheree Murphy, Shobna Gulati MBE, Natalie Cassidy and Chris Bisson to take part. Expect gingerbread masterpieces, towering Christmas cakes, and plenty of puns from Noel and Alison.

Strictly Come Dancing: Christmas Spectacular!

Strictly fans, rejoice! The Christmas special is always a dazzling treat. Celebrities and pro dancers hit the ballroom floor with festive routines that bring glitz and glamour to your living room. This year the celebs are: Josh Widdicombe, Tayce, Vogue Williams, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Tamzin Outhwaite and Billy Monger.

Call the Midwife Christmas Special! 

A tradition as beloved as mulled wine, Call the Midwife brings its heart warming touch to Christmas once again. For the first time in its history, Call the Midwife fans have a two-part Christmas special to look forward to rather than the traditional 90 minute instalment, the BBC has confirmed that there will be two 60 minute episodes, which will also include a Christmas cliff hanger. The midwives are "all busy delivering babies and doing the job they are most dedicated and committed to", while Poplar also welcomes a funfair, which adds "a burst of colour and excitement to the frosty landscape". But there will be challenges, including influenza and the Hong Kong flu, not to mention an escaped prisoner.

Gavin and Stacey: the finale!

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special in 2024 will be the final episode of the sitcom and will air on BBC One on Christmas Day! It’s five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. What has happened since? In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Gavin and Stacey are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad. Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship.

Doctor Who: Joy to the World! 

For sci-fi lovers, the Doctor Who special is a yuletide staple. This year the episode focuses on a powerful but dangerous piece of technology finding its way to a futuristic time-traveling hotel during the holiday season. As a treat this episode will star Bridgerton and Derry Girl's Nicola Coughlan as one time companion Joy. Who doesn’t love a good alien invasion with their turkey dinner?

EastEnders: Christmas Day Drama!

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a trip to Albert Square. EastEnders always delivers the drama and this year promises to be no exception. Cindy Beale and Junior Knight's affair is exposed, Denise Fox gets a very different Christmas to last year, maybe a happy on? Phil Mitchell faces loneliness and Linda Carter is on a downward spiral! Eek!

As the darker nights arrive there’s nothing better than curling up with a cup of tea and getting lost in a TV show. From gripping mysteries to witty comedies the UK has produced some of the best binge worthy series. Here’s a list of shows that will keep you entertained as the weather turns colder!

Sherlock - Crime/Drama

Perfect for: Fans of clever mysteries and intellectual thrillers.

Why Binge: Few shows capture the mind like Sherlock. My top 5 favourite Marvel movies!

I wouldn't say I am a big movie buff but I do have a lot of favourite films and I have been listing them for a few months. You can read about my favourite action movies, Sci-Fi movies, my favourite Animated movies and my favourite musical movies and my favourite disaster movies. In the run up to Halloween I shared my favourite scary movies and the week after I shared my not so scary movies which were more up my street for the spooky season, in the run up to Christmas I shared my favourite Christmas movies my favourite sport movies, I had my favourite movies to cry to then there was my top 5 movies that traumatised me as a child and most recently I shared my favourite summer movies.

This time it's all about Marvel movies, it has been a long time coming simply because it has taken me so long to pick my top 5. I love the Marvel movies, admittedly some of them are not as great as others but I've watched them all, more than once!

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Avengers: Endgame is not just a movie, it's an event! This epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga brings together over a decade of storytelling ending in a showdown that sees Earth's mightiest heroes facing off against Thanos, the Mad Titan. The film's emotional weight, coupled with jaw dropping action sequences and fan favourite moments, makes it one of my favourite movies ever!!

Every Christmas I wrap one of the girls presents watching Avengers: Infinity War and the next day I will wrap the rest of the presents watching Endgame! They are the perfect length. I never get bored of watching and Spiderman makes me cry every time! 

Black Panther (2018)

Black Panther" is a ground breaking film that transcends the superhero genre. Directed by Ryan Coogler it was the first Marvel movie to feature a predominantly Black cast and crew, bringing African culture and heritage to the forefront of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film’s exploration of identity, leadership and social responsibility resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

I loved how beautiful Wakanda was, the storytelling was just brilliant but what makes it sad is that Chadwick Boseman the man who played Black Panther sadly passed away from cancer before the 2nd movie was filmed which will always make the first one my favourite.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Spider-Man No Way Home is a love letter to fans of the webslinger, uniting different generations of Spider Man movies into a single narrative. The film explores the consequences of Peter Parker’s dual life as a hero and a teenager, blending nostalgia with a fresh, engaging story. The return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as their respective Spider Men is a total cinematic event!

I have loved all the Spiderman movies but this one is my favourite just for all the old Spiderman. hehehe Doctor Strange is in it, I am not his biggest fan but there was just enough of him to add that little extra to the movie! 

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy was a gamble that paid off spectacularly. Directed by James Gunn, this film introduced audiences to a ragtag group of misfits and turned them into beloved characters. With its unique blend of humour, heart, and a killer soundtrack Guardians of the Galaxy brought a refreshing change of pace to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I always think of the likes of Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Captain America and even Thor as the grown ups of Marvel and the Guardians as the naughty kids. They are just brilliant, they never fail to make me laugh out loud. 

Iron Man (2008)

Iron Man is where it all began. The film launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and set the tone for what was to come. Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man was a game changer, bringing charisma, humour, and depth to the role. The film’s blend of cutting edge visual effects, sharp dialogue, and character driven storytelling made it an instant classic.

Iron Man was the first ever Marvel movie which I watched and that is what got me into the superhero genre. He is just brilliant!!

Dirty Dancing (1987)

Baby is one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she's disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around, however, when the resort's dance instructor, Johnny enlists Baby as his new partner and the two fall in love. Baby's father forbids her from seeing Johnny, but she's determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer.

Dirty Dancing is the ultimate summer romance with its iconic dance scenes and unforgettable soundtrack it’s a film that continues to capture hearts year after year. Myself and my girls love it, we watch it a couple of times a year and always sing along.

The Parent Trap (1998)

Identical twins Hallie and Annie are separated after their parents' divorce. Years later, they discover each other at a summer camp and decide to switch places in an effort to reunite their parents.

This remake of the 1961 classic stars Lindsay Lohan. It's full of mischief, and heart warming moments. It's perfect for a family movie night during the summer break.

Stand by Me (1986)

After learning that a stranger has been accidentally killed near their rural homes, four Oregon boys decide to go and see the body. On the way they encounter a mean junk man, a marsh full of leeches, they also learn more about one another and their very different home lives. Just a lark at first, the boys adventure evolves into a defining event in their lives.

Based on Stephen King’s book, this coming of age film explores themes of friendship, adventure and the bittersweet transition from childhood to adolescence. I remember seeing this when I was about the same age as the boys in the film and wanted an adventure like this during the summer.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Donna, an independent hotelier in the Greek islands is preparing for her daughter's wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother's past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

Escape to the Greek islands with "Mamma Mia!" This musical extravaganza, featuring the songs of ABBA, is pure summer fun. With its gorgeous setting, star studded cast, it’s the perfect film for a summer sing along.

The Inbetweeners Movie (2011)

Now that their final year of school is over, friends Will, Simon, Neil and Jay are off to Crete for a holiday. Hoping to get as much sun, sea and sex as possible, the boys quickly find more trouble than they had bargained for.

For a more light hearted and hilarious summer film, "The Inbetweeners Movie" follows on from the TV series. Full of awkward moments and laugh out loud scenes, it's a great choice for a fun summer night with friends. Probably not one for the kids though! It's not the best movie in the world but it is one of my favourites. It makes me laugh so much!
