Great kids gameshows...

When I was a kid there was CBBC & CITV to watch every tea-time....They were the good old days....The mid 80's to the mid 90's for me....

I was so excited to read that Knightmare cult children's TV show will make a one-off return online as part of YouTube's 'Geek Week' season
between August 4th & 10th .... The new episode will feature Peep Show's Isy Suttie and Harry Potter star Jessie Cave and is being filmed in the same Norwich studio as the original series....

I used to love Knightmare! Every Friday tea-time I'd watch it...

This got me thinking about all the great kids tv there used to be....Especially the game shows!

"Wacky! Fun! Crazy! It's outrageous!"

Five words that had a whole generation of kids glued to the screen. Pat Sharp's Fun House was the defining kids gameshow of the 90s, blending gunge, ball pools, two hot twins and a man with an awful mullet and serving up 25 minutes of giddy tomfoolery. And I still really want a go on those Go-Karts.

When he wasn't busy recreating the Leaning Tower of Pisa with nothing but a packet of Cornflakes and some Pritt Stick on Art Attack, Neil Buchanan kept '90s kids amused with Finders Keepers that involved four kids taking it in turns to trash 'mum and dad's house' to find clues and win prizes....I always wanted a go on this game show....

Dave Benson Phillips, a man so hyperactive he constantly sounds like he's just wolfed down 3 litres of Pepsi, a Doritos Grab Bag and seven Sherbet Dip Dabs, was at the helm of this gunge-tastic BBC gameshow Get Your Own Back. Phillips's enthusiasm managed to mask a rather flimsy format, which featured a lot of faffing around before we got to the good stuff - adults getting a proper slimy gunging.

Kids game shows were so much better in the 80's and 90's....I can't think of any that my girls watch now that can even compare to the old one's....

What game shows did you like as a child?

Stories for My Little Sister - Meet Heloise

I was emailed about a month and a half ago by a lovely woman who reads my blog who just wanted to share her and her sisters website with me....Stories For My Little Sister!

The site is run by two sisters.... Samantha (The writer) & Diana (the Artist).....They share their stories in the most beautiful way and it gets better you can download all the books, free of charge.....

My girls have become great fans of the stories so when I was asked if we would like to review their new book Meet Heloise we could not refuse!

Growing up can be hard, and it's good to know that there's someone there to help you along the way. But what if that someone were a rhinoceros?

It's a gentle story about a girl navigating some of the ups and downs of growing up with help and advice from a rather unexpected source - Heloise, who is a rhinoceros!

My girls both loved it! I don't want to say much about the story and ruin it for you but it really is such a lovely story the pictures which go with it are perfect and are beautifully drawn...

Ellie has decided she needs a rhinoceros like Heloise to help her at school....She said it would be ideal to help her write properly...In fact I think everyone needs a Heloise in their life to give you a bit of encouragement when you need it...

Usually my girls Becky and Ellie do not like the same sort of stories with there being 5 years age difference....but this one was great for them both!! They both thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end....

A Day Out In Amble...

We had a fabulous day out at the beach yesterday....

We went to Amble....Up on the Northumberland coast....Not the closest beach to us but it is by far the nicest and the cleanest It only takes about 45 minutes on the bus....The girls love it there and so do I!!

When at the beach how could we not have fish and chips....Well sausage and chips for the girls and Beanies & chips for me...They are sausage meat in batter with baked beans in the center! Delicious!! No where else sells them that I know of apart from the best fish and chip shop in Amble....lol

They've really missed a trick in Amble....At the top of the beach there are two unfilled paddling pools....Would of been so nice if they were cleaned up and filled!!

Time for a paddle!!

Then onto the rock pools...

A walk along the pier where it was blowing a gale....So nice and cooling though...

Then we caught the bus home!! Ellie slept most the way home then as soon as we got in Becky laid on the settee to watch Tv and fell asleep....

A fab day but tired us all out...Must be the sea air!

Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge!

Yesterday I took my two girls along to the local library.....

They'd both brought leaflets home from school before they finished for the holidays about the Creepy House Summer Reading Challenge and were eager to sign up for it....

Every year, thousands of families all over the country take part in the UK’s biggest reading event for children in libraries, the Summer Reading Challenge, run by the charity The Reading Agency.

The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged four to eleven. It is run in very nearly all libraries in the UK and it is completely free.

Every year there’s a different theme. The aim of the challenge is to get children to read six books from their library during the summer holidays.

Both my girls got their starter packs which included activity sheets, stinky stickers and a certificate....

Next time they go they get a glow in the dark bookmark, stickers and more activity sheets then the third time they get a keyring, stickers, activity sheets a certificate and a medal for completing the challenge....

Go to your local library during the summer holidays – the sooner you go the longer your child will have to read six books. Staff will enrol your child and give them a membership pack.....

We're going on a bear hunt....

We all know the story of We're going on a bear hunt....A book and story which is so much fun....

Follow and join in the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What a surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest!

We're going on a bear hunt.
We're going to catch a big one.
What a beautiful day!
We're not scared.

When I was doing childcare at college I was sent out on placement to a school with reception class aged children who were reading the book "We're going on a bear hunt." they had a whole few weeks dedicated to lessons on various things related to the book....It was such a lovely time and I had so much fun....

So as soon as Becky became interested in real books....Not just board books for toddlers this was hunted out and bought.....I managed to get her a copy of it from a charity shop for about 20 pence....She fell in love with it too!

When Ellie was in nursery it was her favorite book too....They did a whole assembly about it and she fell in love with it.....It's been a while since the book was last read and has been collecting dust on the bookshelf until I decided to have a sort out of the books.....Now Ellie has gone and fallen in love with the book again and I think it's brilliant.....I love the story and love seeing how she acts it out (with the hiccups she did so well)....

We did have a minor disaster last week when Ellie turned the page too hard and it ripped....But a bit of sellotape and it is a good as new....Well as good as a book can be after 7 years....

I Really Do Love The Summer Holidays!

Ahhh we're a few days into the school holidays already and I'm loving it....The weather has been rubbish but that isn't bothering us in the slightest!

I really do love the summer holidays...
(Remind me of this in a few weeks when the novelty has worn off....lol)

These are my reasons why!

There is no alarm clocks going off at 7am in the morning!!

We might get lie in's!! Well as long as the kids can I sleep I can too...

The days out.....We can go for days out and not have to worry about being back in time for tea, baths and bedtime....

No uniforms to wash and find on a morning....

More BBQ's....

No lost school shoes, bags, books, etc....

No rushing about having to be out the house for 8.20am...

The kids can play outside all day! Well as long as the weather is nice....

No homework to stress about!!

The girls can get dressed in minutes....Shorts and t-shirts!

No feeling guilty for me having to bring the kids in for tea, get bathed and be in for 7pm....If it's nice they can play out till later!

I get help with the housework....hehehe

As much as my girls love school we do have a happier house in the summer holidays as there is no stress of school and the girls get to do their own thing with no timetables...

Did I mention no alarm clocks and lie in's....lol

Teen Beach Movie Soundtrack - Review

Did you watch the television premiere of "Teen Beach Movie" on the Disney Channel on Friday? We did and we loved it!! It's the new film which Becky want's to watch over and over and she has since Friday....lol

"Teen Beach Movie" introduces confident, resilient surfer McKenzie and her carefree boyfriend Brady, a fan of the retro surf musical movie, "Wet Side Story." On the morning of McKenzie's planned departure for boarding school, she and Brady catch one last epic wave which mysteriously carries them right into "Wet Side Story," circa 1962, where they meet Seacat, Giggles, Rascal and Cheechee, among others. Amidst the spontaneous song and dance, there's trouble in paradise -- it's bikers versus surfers for control of the local hangout but Mack and Brady unwittingly interfere with the movie's star-crossed plot, one that would pair a surfer (the teen matinee idol Tanner) and a biker (Lela, the sister of Butchy, the biker gang's leader). Typical of the teen beach movie genre, a kooky subplot has mad scientists Les Camembert and Dr. Fusion scheming to alter weather patterns and take over the local hangout and then, the world.

We were lucky enough to be sent a copy of the soundtrack to listen to....The soundtrack features 12 new songs performed by Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Grace Phipps and the cast.....

I actually recognised Ross Lynch from the Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally which gave me 'cool mum point's' with Becky...lol

On the cd we have.....

1. Oxygen – Maia Mitchell
2. Surf Crazy – Spencer Lee, Kelly Hawkes and Cast
3. Cruisin For a Bruisin Ross Lynch, Grace Phipps, Jason Evigan
4. Falling for Ya – Grace Phipps
5. Meant to Be Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Grace Phipps, Spencer Lee
6. Like Me Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell, Grace Phipps, Spencer Lee & Cast
7. Meant to Be Reprise 1 Grace Phipps, Spencer Lee
8. Can t Stop Singing Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell
9. Meant to Be Reprise 2 Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell
10. Surf s Up – Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell & Cast
11. Coolest Cats in Town – Spencer Lee, Grace Phipps, Jason Evigan
12. Surf Crazy Finale Cast

I'd say the songs are a mixture of surf rock, Motown R&B, rockabilly and pop and are very catchy and so easy to dance too!!

My favourites are Cruisin For a Bruisin & Meant to be!!

Becky said I'm being cruel trying to make her choose he favourite song as she likes them all....It was great to be able to sing along to the songs while watching it on TV!

The general feeling is we love it!!!

It is a bit of cheesy fun....Obviously being by Disney it's very child friendly!! Which is not a bad thing...There is no foul language, sexual innuendos or anything nasty....Perfect for young peoples ears!!

The soundtrack can be bought from the usual places...

I was sent a copy of Disney's "Teen Beach Movie" free of charge for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It's their first day proper day off school weekends don't count...hehehe So this is when the meal planning gets tough....I've decided to plan the meals we are having but not say which day we're having them because if I do and it doesn't go to plan I just get grumpy...lol The only day I know for certain is Sunday and maybe Saturday....

Duracell 45 Minute AA/AAA Battery Charger - Review!!

I was sent the Duracell 45 Minute AA/AAA Battery Charger to try by the lovely people at Super Savvy Me....

It arrived and the packaging was fab!! It was in a sleek, swish looking black box.....I'm keeping the box I'm sure I can find something to put in it!!

The charger itself is very compact, it opens up and although it has to be left open to charge it still takes up half the room of previous chargers I've had. It has a light indicator that is red and changes green to let you know your batteries are charged. It will also blink red if the battery is not in correct or faulty.

I am not very technical when it comes to things like this but this is idiot proof....

I put the batteries in and after about 45 minutes it they were charged and the light went green!!

The Duracell 45 minute charger is a must-have if you have a family full of game players, picture takers and toy enthusiasts! No more hunting for batteries, taking them out of one remote and putting them into another!

The thing that I like the most about the Duracell 45 minute charger is that it is a good investment as I don't have to keep wasting money buying disposable batteries....

Prices do vary depending on where you get it from.... Anything from £29 to £35.....But when you look at how much you will save by not buying disposable batteries it does not seem so bad!!

I was sent the Duracell 45 Minute AA/AAA Battery Charger free of charge to try from Super Savvy Me...This is my honest review....All thoughts and opinions are my own!!

Silent Sunday!

Fictional Deaths I Will Never Get Over!!

Perhaps it’s the power of the writing, perhaps it’s the strength of the performance, but sometimes a fictional character's death in movies can affect us deep down inside to provoke an emotional response. Despite these people not being real, we still feel the need to shed some tears as the animators decide to stop drawing them or the actor walks off set to go and work on another movie.

I happened to notice #FictionalDeathsIWillNeverGetOver trending a few times over the last few weeks on Twitter and was intrigued....I never realised how many fictional deaths there were which have touched me....

When Mufasa king of the jungle  is trampled to death by a heard of buffalo saving his son Simba I cried buckets..... What was Disney thinking? I think that was the first time I ever cried because of a film....

The Harry Potter series has a lot to answer for...Dobby, Fred Weasley, Snape, Sirius, Hedwig, Tonks, Lupin and Dumbledore all died....

Buffy the Vampire slayer has a lot to answer for too....There were so many deaths which were so sad....Buffy died twice...Came back to life each time thankfully!

When Buffys mum died...I cried and I still do when it's repeated!! The whole episode was so moving!!

When Tara was shot...Aww!! Angel being sent to Hell...Technically he was already dead being a vampire and all but all the same it was so sad and in the final episode Spike dying to save the world....Aww!!

Littlefoot's mum from The Land Before Time....So, so sad. Those of us who are huge The Land Before Time fans know Littlefoot's mum as Mama Longneck. Littlefoot's mummy dies in a fight with Sharptooth protecting Littlefoot and Cera. Parents are the best.

John Coffey from The Green Mile....One of the most affecting on-screen deaths ever John Coffey being walked to the electric chair has stayed in my mind... Especially when he asks not to be hooded as he is "afraid of the dark". I cried so much!!

Bambi's mother!! :(

And finally Jack Dawson off Titanic!!

Last day of School!!

Hooray!!

This school year has flown over....Does not seem that long since it was the first day of the school year....Ellie starting Year One and Becky Year 5!!

Over the last school year...

Becky has learnt to swim!
Ellie has really came on with her reading!
Becky is the 'House Captain' They collect house points for doing good things and each week and Becky is the one who is in charge of the trophy if her house win that week!
Ellie has collected all the certificates she can for being good and doing well in class!
They both did amazingly well in their class assemblies!
They were both fab in their Sports Day! First one they've had in about 3 years due to bad weather in past years!
Ellie no longer needs speech therapy!
Becky is so confident now....She actually gets told not to shout out the answers to the questions the teacher asks!
Ellie has became a girly girl....Instead of just being friends with boys she now has little girly friends!
Becky can read just about anything now & loves to read....
They both had amazing end of year school reports....Becky significantly above average in Maths & reading but needs to work on her handwriting more and Ellie average for all her subjects apart from maths where she is above average!! She needs to stop day dreaming in class though....She is a bit of a Dolly day-dreamer...lol
They met their teachers for September and Becky has fallen in love with hers....lol This will be the 4th male teacher she's had in 6 years in school and she always does better with male teachers so we're expecting great things for the next school year!
Becky is expected to do really well in her SAT exams next school year!
Both of them have decided they really like playing Rugby!

I am so proud of what both of my girls have achieved over the last school year....

Now the next time they go to school Ellie will be in Year 2 and Becky Year 6!!! It will be Becky's last year at Primary school which scares me.......I know she'll be fine at high school....But it's a big step for her at least I have another year until I have to worry about that!! :/

Things you didn't know you could freeze...

If you're anything like me your freezer is full of the usual things, frozen veg, meat, ice cream, leftovers, etc but it can be used for so much more than that! Here's some of things that you maybe didn't know you could freeze....

Cake!
Once baked a plain cake can be wrapped in cling film and popped in the freezer...Make sure it's not decorated, as the icing and edible decorations will not freeze as well...

Eggs!
Ever frozen an egg before? No you don't stick it in there whole but if you crack it into a bowl give it a little whisk and pour it into a freezer bag or individual ice cube trays and you can make your eggs last much longer...If you're an avid baker it can be handy to freeze the egg yolk and whites separately. This way you can use the whites for recipes such as meringues and the yolks for making dishes like mayonnaise - and you don't have to worry about wasting the leftovers...

Cheese!
If your block of cheese is soon to go out of date, never fear it can be frozen! It's best to grate the cheese and store in airtight Tupperware container, cling film or freezer bags...this will make it easier to grab handfuls when you need it.

Bananas!
Bananas tend to go off quite quickly but this doesn't mean they should be heading for the bin. Over-ripe (or brown) bananas can be frozen with or without the skin, and used at another time. You don't need to wait for them to go off either you can stick bananas in the freezer as soon as you buy them if you don't think you'll get a chance to use them all.

Milk!
Best frozen in individual portions, milk is great for storing away in the freezer if it's nearing its expiry date. If you decide to store the milk in a carton or bottle, make sure you pour a little bit of the milk away from the top so it has room to expand. When thawing, leave it in the fridge overnight and every now and then shake the bottle or carton to mix the milk and the fat back together.

Yogurt!
Freeze when you reach their use-by date and they make great healthy alternatives to ice creams. You can use straight from the freezer for a quick treat for children or blitz in a blender with more fruit and a splash of milk or juice for a thick smoothie.....Another idea for your frozen yogurt is to freeze them in lolly moulds. These will make great treats for the kids in the summer months plus yogurt or smoothie ice lollies are much better for you than your average ice lolly!

Rice!
If you've made way too much rice and have a heap leftover from dinner don't bin it - freeze it! Make sure your rice is cooled before freezing. Portion your rice into Tupperware boxes & when it comes to defrosting your rice you can leave it in the fridge to defrost overnight or give it a quick blast in the microwave!

Wine!
A few drops left in your wine bottle? It does happen sometimes....lol Don't pour it down the sink - pour it into an ice cube tray or ziplock bag and freeze instead. The freezing process doesn't effect the wine at all and it means you'll always have some to hand to add to dishes and sauces.

Fresh Herbs!
Fresh herbs do not have a long shelf-life and do not lose any flavour when frozen....So if you've got a window box of herbs or some leftover from a meal, finely chop and push them into ice cube trays, top with water and freeze...Simply chop when needed and add to meals - no need to defrost..

Nuts!
Freezing nuts or seeds is a great way of keeping them super fresh and full of flavour. It's also a good way of avoiding waste when they're near their use-by date....Freeze your nuts in a zip lock bag and use from frozen. You can leave on the side to defrost or add to cake mixtures or warm foods like porridge without defrosting them.

Cherry Pie....

Each school term Becky does a few weeks of cookery as part of her technology lessons....

Anyway for the last few weeks she's been doing these lesson!!

Last time she did cookery was late last year and she made Leafy Soup which you can read about HERE! It wasn't the best but she did try her hardest!!

Well this term they were making pies!

The class was to decide on the perfect filling for a pie....

Can you guess what it is?...

My guess was Cherry I was close but there was more then just cherries in it....

It contained...

Orange Zest, Chocolate, Cherries, Strawberries and topped with marshmallows and glace cherries!!

It looked like a steak pie but I had a little nibble and it tasted delicious!! The pastry was just right and as disgusting as I thought it would be it simply wasn't....I've told Becky we can cook some pies during the holidays....Another fun thing to add to the list of things to do!!

Becky certainly enjoyed it!!

Things I wished I'd known about c-sections...

After posting the birth stories of my girls Becky and Ellie last week.....It got me thinking about things I wished I'd known about before having the caesarean sections...These might not apply to emergency caesarean sections just planned one's....

In no particular order...

You’ll get the shakes....
Ohh yes....They're fun!! lol They're quite normal....I shook for about an hour....My teeth chattered, my muscles quivered and jumped and the more I tried to stop shaking the more I shook....

The operating theater will be full of people...
Don't worry!!.....There will be surgeons, nurses, midwives, anaesthetists, trainee people a whole heap of people who each have their own jobs to do...

Try for the first surgery slot in the morning!
On time. Relaxed. Not rushed. The later in the day, the more likely it is to get pushed back, start late, have stressed  or tired doctors....Yes,you have to wake up at an ungodly time but it's so worth it....

Take the drugs they offer you...
Even if you don't feel like you need them and the pain isn't too bad....Take them....Don't try to be a hero....It's better to keep taking them regularly than to fall behind and have to catch up while being in pain....

Take a shower as soon as possible and put on your own comfy pajamas.
Getting clean will just make you feel so much better.....Make sure you have someone there to help you because standing is just difficult and it hurts...I felt really dizzy in the shower but had the reassurance of someone being with me in case I did pass out....I didn't thankfully!

High-waisted bottoms are a must...
When you pack for the hospital, be sure to bring PJ bottoms & knickers that are loose-fitting and high-waisted. Think granny pants or PJ's that Simon Cowell would wear....You want to make sure that the waistband will not hit you at the bikini line....Bring something that you can hike up well over your hips....The bigger the better!!

You’ll have to walk before you think you’re ready...
After my first c-section with Becky I wasn’t allowed up for over twenty-four hours and even that seemed impossibly soon to be up and around. I was terrified of moving...The nurse explained that the sooner I was walking, the sooner I would heal and be allowed home....With Ellie I was wise to this and was up at 5am in the shower and walking around less then 24 hours after having her...lol Hurt like hell but I did feel better for it!!

Have a spare pillow...
Have a pillow to hug when you cough, sneeze or laugh...It helps! Laughing hurts!!

C-Section babies may not cry straight away...
I wish someone had told me that!! With Becky I was so worried when she didn't cry!I was convinced there was something wrong that no one was telling me.....Eventually the anesthesiologist nurse told me that C-Section babies don't cry because their lungs may still be full of fluid because they haven't been squished like with a normal birth...

You’ll have a catheter for a good while post-surgery...
Don't let anyone pull or touch the tube...It hurts when they do...Ohh it bloody hurts when they pull it out too you have been warned!!

C-section recovery is going to be much harder and longer than for a vaginal birth...
Remember, a c-section is major abdominal surgery. Your intestines were pulled out and after everything is put back inside and you are stitched up...Don't rush things!!

You’ll be quizzed on various embarrassing bodily-function-related milestones...
They need to know when you wee, poo and fart!!

Numbness....
There might be numb in spots near your incision.....they might wear off in time....They might not!! I had several spots along my incision that were numb for months afterwards but have got the feeling back...Now nearly 6 years after having Ellie there is still some spots that are numb....Totally normal you'll get used to it!

Do not stress about the scar....
Wear it like a badge of honor!

If you're facing a c-section don't be scared.....The more you worry the more stressed you and your baby will become.... Those people who say people who have elective c-sections are too posh to push.....Believe me it is not the easy option!! It will hurt afterwards but as long as you rest and take it easy you'll be ok....

Our Weekly Meal Plan!! - #mealplanningmonday

Monday again....

It's the last week of school here before the girls break up for over 6 weeks!! Yay!! So this will probably be the last meal plan which goes to plan for the six weeks the girls are off school....lol

Last weeks meal plan went all to plan! Sort of....We had a few changes but we ate everything planned just on different days....

We did have a mishap with the Chicken Fajita Wraps...The mix was perfect...Not to spicy!! I don't know why but I thought it would be a good idea to use Sweet Chilli Wraps for Stu & I instead of normal Tortilla Wraps....lol I wish I hadn't....They were delicious at the time but we spent the next day on and off the toilet....The song A Burning Ring Of Fire was sung a lot that day....lol So glad we didn't give the kids the Chilli wraps....

So on the menu this week we have....

Monday - Jacket potatoes with Tuna & sweetcorn topping.
....
Tuesday - Chinese pork burgers in buns with salad....
 Wednesday - Meatballs and spaghetti....
Thursday - Ham Salad....
Friday - Fish fingers, chips & beans....
Saturday - BBQ! We're at my friends birthday party and she's having a BBQ so we'll eat there....
Sunday - Bean and tomato sausage hotpot...

As always I've joined in with the wonderful At Home With Mrs M's #mealplanningmonday linky....
