What to buy teachers for the end of the school year and what to avoid!

As soon as we hit June the end of the school year seems to come so quickly. One minute you’re labelling water bottles and hunting for missing PE kits and the next you’re blinking back tears as you realise your child is another year older and their lovely teacher has been a daily part of their life for the past 10 months. Whether it’s their first year in Reception or they’re heading off to secondary school saying thank you to a teacher can feel like a big deal!

So, what do you actually buy a teacher to show your appreciation?

A Best Teacher Award beside an Apple

Personalised gifts but be thoughtful about them!
Think keyrings, tote bags or notebooks. Things that are actually useful. Something with the child’s name and year or a little message can feel really special.

A heartfelt thank you card!
A card with a handwritten message from your child can mean more than anything money can buy. Teachers will often keep these in a little stash for when they’ve had a rough day. Bonus points if your child draws a little picture of the classroom or writes something funny they’ve remembered.

Gift vouchers!
It might not seem personal but it’s genuinely one of the most appreciated gifts. Whether it’s for a coffee shop, book store or Amazon! Vouchers allow teachers to treat themselves to something they’ll actually use. Even a £5 voucher feels like a little luxury especially when you add a note showing your appreciation.

Plants or flowers!
A cheerful potted plant or a little bunch of flowers can brighten their home (or classroom). Opt for something low maintenance, think succulents or mini roses. Just avoid huge bouquets that are difficult to get home on the bus.

A group gift!
If you’re in a WhatsApp group with other parents why not club together for one lovely gift? It could be a spa voucher, a restaurant gift card or a nice bottle of fizz. One amazing gift can sometimes mean more than ten novelty candles.

What Not to Buy a Teacher!

While all gifts are appreciated in spirit there are a few things that can be a bit questionable. Here’s what might be better left on the shop shelf:

"World’s Best Teacher" tat!
Yes, it’s cute but how many plaques, mugs and fridge magnets can one person own? After five years of teaching, they’ve probably got a drawer full.

Anything too personal!
Scented body lotion, bath bombs or perfumes sound like a nice idea unless the teacher is allergic, hates strong smells or already has a shelf full. Unless you know their preferences it’s safer to skip it.

Homemade food (unless you’re really confident)!
While that tray of cupcakes might look delicious to you, teachers can be a bit cautious about homemade treats (allergies, hygiene and all that). Shop bought goodies might be a better bet or just stick to the card!

Joke gifts!
Unless you know the teacher well enough to be sure they’ll take it in good humour it’s best not to go down the novelty route. That huge wine glass or cheeky coaster might be hilarious to you but it might not land the same way with everyone.

Do you buy the teachers presents at the end of the school year?

What to buy Dads for Father’s Day (Especially the ones who want nothing)

Father’s Day. That yearly occasion where we all panic about what to get the man who says he doesn’t want anything, already owns everything and insists he’s just happy with a nice cup of tea. It is classic Dad behaviour! My dad always says he doesn't want anything but I bet if I got him nothing the worst daughter award would go to me!

While the shops are full of socks, beer mugs and “Best Dad Ever” keyrings it’s tricky trying to pick something that feels thoughtful, without spending a fortune especially if your dad is the kind of bloke who doesn’t want a fuss. Here are some ideas of what to avoid and what would make a great gift!

Fathers Day Related Cup on Rock

Let’s get the least wanted gifts out of the way, you know those gifts that just scream "I just grabbed you at the supermarket as I couldn't think of anything else". Here are a few of the most common least wanted Father’s Day presents:

Another novelty mug - He already has 27 in the cupboard, including one from 1994 with a fading “World’s Best Dad” sticker.

Gimmicky gadgets - Like a self stirring cup or a golf ball shaped ice cube tray. Fun for five minutes, then they get put straight to the back of the drawer.

Socks with jokes on them - Unless your dad specifically asks for socks that say “Grill Master”.

Toiletry gift sets - Unless they are good one's. I am thinking the ones with a weird body spray scent that’s half Lynx, half petrol station air freshener.

Ties - Unless he still wears them regularly. In which case, fair play. But for most dads? Nope.

Now let’s move on to the good stuff! Here are some budget friendly but brilliant gift ideas for the Dad who wants nothing!

A Dad Voucher book - Homemade or bought!
Make your own mini book of “Dad Vouchers” with things like: One car wash (done properly!), a cooked breakfast, an afternoon of watching whatever he wants on TV with no moaning allowed or a trip to the chippy on you. These are fun, personal and cost very little, just your time. You can print them at home or find pre made versions online for just a few pounds.

A personalised keyring!
Not the cheesy kind! Look on places like Etsy for keyrings you can personalise with a little message or even a soundwave of your voice. Lots are under £10 and feel a bit more special than your standard “Best Dad” fare.

A box of his favourite snacks!
Not just a multipack of crisps, I'm talking a mini hamper of his favourite bits. Think of his favourite snacks: those posh peanuts that he only gets at Christmas, pickled onion Space Raiders which are a blast from the past, fancy beer (or alcohol free if that’s his thing), chocolate covered raisins or even a few retro sweets from his youth. Wrap it up nicely and it’s a winner.

Something for his hobby!
Even if he says he doesn’t want anything, if he’s got a hobby, there’s usually something he’ll appreciate. Into gardening? A new plant label set or a decent pair of gloves? Loves football? A pint glass with his team’s badge or a funny football themed book could do the trick. A music lover? A set of guitar picks, vinyl record coasters or a print of his favourite band. These don’t have to break the bank and even £5 to £15 can get you something thoughtful.

A DIY night in kit!
Put together a mini Father’s Day movie box. Include: A film or series suggestion (maybe even write it out like a cinema ticket!), his favourite snacks, a pair of comfy socks (plain, not punny) and a little note saying you’ll watch it with him, no phones allowed! Sometimes the best gift is just making time together feel a bit special.

A memory jar!
This is a really heartfelt one. Get a jar or tin and fill it with notes, funny memories, things you love about him, jokes you share, quotes from your childhood or even old photos folded up small. It’s thoughtful, it costs next to nothing and it’s guaranteed to bring a tear to his eye (even if he pretends he’s “just got something in his eye”).

A cheap & cheerful DIY project!
If you're a bit crafty, make something. Paint a rock with a message, make a framed photo collage or turn an empty jam jar into a “Dad’s Treat Fund” with a label and a few coins to get him started. It doesn’t have to be perfect it just has to come from you.

Not everything has to be a physical gift. Sometimes experiences are better, especially if your dad truly doesn’t want stuff. Think things like breakfast in bed, a walk and a pub lunch or an afternoon with a no to-do list.

You don’t have to spend loads to make Father’s Day meaningful especially for the dad who says he doesn’t want anything. Skip the generic tat, focus on things that show you know him and remember that time, effort and love are worth more than any shop bought gift!

What are you getting your dad or father figure for Father's Day?

Lego Harry Potter - Dobby the House Elf set!

Last Christmas I got the Harry Potter Dobby Lego set and I only got around to doing it at the end of last month, better late than never. Dobby is my favourite character from the Harry Potter movies. He is a little bit chaotic, has a good heart and is just adorable.

Ideal for muggles aged 8 and upwards and all Harry Potter fans, relive the magic of Harry Potter as you build Lego's first ever figure of Dobby!!

Dobby Lego Box

Fully assembled Dobby measures over 19cm high, 10cm deep and 12cm wide and this set Contains 403 pieces.

The Dobby the House Elf figure has a posable head, ears, arms and fingers so you can change his look and he can hold the brick built accessories which include Aunt Petunia’s floating pudding cake, a model of Tom Riddle’s diary and of course Harry Potter’s sock! Master has given Dobby a sock. hehehe

Last year I put together the Hedwig Lego set and it was a challenge. I imagined this one being the same but it was totally different to put together. I got started and it didn't take long to see Dobby coming together. The detail on it is fantastic. I love Dobby's hands and the moveable fingers.

Dobby coming together

The most challenging bit came when I was doing Dobby's ears, I ended up with both facing the same way but I needed one in reverse. I got there eventually and just look at him, those eyes!

Dobby's face

The accessories which came with Dobby are just brilliant, even the evil diary owned by Tom Riddle. Aunt Petunia’s floating cake was a fiddly to put together with the little pieces and I think I lost a couple of the red one's from the top. I did knock a few on the floor and some obviously went missing. I am sure they will turn up and then I will just pop them on.

Tom Riddle’s diary and Aunt Petunia’s cake

I loved making this set, it was straightforward to build and I completed it in just under two hours which I felt was the perfect time. Even though it seemed quick to put together compared to some Lego sets it was fun and I am so happy with the end result! This would make a great gift for any Harry Potter fan and now it is being sold for round about £18 to £20.

Dobby the House Elf Lego

Do you like putting Lego together? What was the last set which you completed?

What to buy for the Dad who doesn't want a gift!

It is Father's Day in just over a couple of weeks and shopping for a dad who insists he doesn't want anything can be a challenge, My dad is one of those dad's who says he doesn't want anything but then would be upset if I didn't get him something. He's a bit of a pain in the bum. He is so hard to buy for too. He has everything he needs and doesn't really have any interests apart from football which should make it easy. Buy him something from his favourite team you say, that would be great but he loves football so much he doesn't have a favourite team. lol

Finding the perfect gift for the dad who says he doesn't want anything involves thinking outside the box and focusing on experiences, personalisation and meaningful gestures.

Happy Father's Day

Experiences and Quality Time:

An outdoor adventure: Plan a day outside. Go for a long walk, a picnic, fishing or a visit a National Trust location. Spending time in nature together can be refreshing and memorable.

Tickets to an event: Whether it's a concert, theatre performance or sporting event tickets give you the chance to do something together while watching something he enjoys.

A Weekend Getaway: Organise a short trip to a place he loves or has always wanted to visit. A change of scenery and a break from routine can be a lot of fun.

Personalised and Sentimental Gifts!

A custom photo album: Create a photo album or scrapbook filled with cherished family memories. This personal touch often means more than any store bought item.

Handwritten letters: Write a heartfelt letter expressing your appreciation and love. You can also collect letters from other family members and compile them into a book.

Custom art or crafts: Commission a piece of art or craft that reflects his interests or family moments. This could be a painting, a custom illustration, or even a handcrafted piece of furniture.

Subscription Services!

Book or Audiobook subscription: For the dad who loves to read, a subscription to a service like Audible or a book of the month club can be a great gift.

Food and drink subscriptions: Consider subscriptions for gourmet coffee, craft beer or monthly snack boxes. These can offer him something new to enjoy every month.

Streaming services: A subscription to Netflix, Disney+ or another streaming service can provide hours of entertainment without adding clutter.

Charitable Donations and Giving Back!

Donation to a cause: Make a donation in his name to a charity or cause he cares about. This not only honours his values but also makes a positive impact.

Volunteer together: Spend a day volunteering together for a cause he's passionate about. This can be a rewarding experience and a great way to spend time together.

Health and Wellness!

Massage or Spa day: Treat him to a relaxing massage or a day at the spa. It's a great way to help him unwind and take care of himself.

Fitness classes or Gym membership: If he enjoys staying active consider signing him up for fitness classes or renewing his gym membership.

Hobbies and Interests!

Workshop or a class: Enrol him in a class or workshop related to his hobbies such as cooking, photography, or woodworking. This can provide him with new skills and an enjoyable experience.

A gardening kit: If he enjoys gardening you could buy him some seeds to grow or perhaps a few rare plants that he has always wanted.

Music lessons or instruments: If he has an interest in music, consider music lessons or an upgrade to his musical instruments.

Is your dad hard to buy for too?

What I would like for my birthday and Christmas!

Hello November! My favourite month! It's my birthday in a few weeks, I'm a Celeb will be on the TV soon and it's OK to talk about and get excited for Christmas!

I love having my birthday in November, all the Christmas gifts are in the shops, places have good deals on big bottles of Baileys for almost half price and there is of course all the best chocolate on offer too. hehehe My family have no excuse for not getting me good gifts. hehehe

A wrapped gift

My family has been asking what I want for my birthday and Christmas and I have come up with quite a few things that I would love along with the usual pyjamas and slippers which I thought I would share here too.

Lego sets - Dobby and Thanos Glove

Infinity Gauntlet - £59.99 - Amazon.
Dobb the House-Elf - £17.99 - Amazon.

Last year I got The Harry Potter Hedwig Lego set and as much as I cursed and grumbled putting it together I did love it. Lego isn't just for kids and after last year I really wanted another set. These two sets are top of my list, I love Dobby and the Thanos glove has been on my list for years but until now was way too expensive. £59.99 still is expensive but I do remember being twice as much and more a couple of years ago.

Gel nail set and HP eye shadow palette

Gel Nail Polish Starter Kit - £24.99 - Amazon.

Over the last few months I have really got into doing my nails but the nail polish I have been using doesn't last that long and people have said gel nail polish is better so I want to give it a try. It can't be any worse than normal nail polish.

Sheglam Harry Potter Hogwarts Houses Palette Set - £16.49 - Shein.

I love this set, not just because it's Harry Potter but because the colours are so pretty too. It's been ages since I had some new eye shadow so I am due some.

Phone case, light bottle, perfume and Baileys

Harry Potter phone case - £21.95.
Harry Potter Inspired Spell Bottle Light Up Wine Bottle - £10.99 - Amazon.
Lacoste Touch Of Pink For Her Eau de Toilette.
Baileys.

I do need a new phone case and the girls say I am old fashioned as I like a case which covers all of my phone and not just the back. It works well for me, I've never had a smashed phone screen like them. hehehe

I love the light up wine bottles and this one is so pretty and also features one of my favourite quotes from Harry Potter. Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

I am almost all out of my favourite perfume and who doesn't love a glass of Baileys at this time of year.

Funko Pop's

Lord Voldemort Funko - £13.00 - Amazon.
Loki Funko - £11.00 - Amazon.
Fawkes Funko - £13.00 - Amazon.

I have quite a few Funko Pop figures. Marvel, WWE wrestlers, Disney and of course Harry Potter one's. I only realised that I didn't have a Voldemort one the other day. Eesh! and the Fawkes one is something a bit different. The Loki has to be bought as the last one I got was a Thor one.

What are you hoping to receive for your next birthday or Christmas?

Halloween treats from Lush!

Halloween bath bombs are not your average bath time treat. They come in a variety of spooky shapes and colors from pumpkins and ghosts to skulls and witches cauldrons. I think each bath bomb is a miniature work of art.

Lush Halloween bath bombs

Once a year in the run up to Halloween I always have a bit of a splurge in Lush and buy some of their spooky offerings. I love how each year they keep coming up with different things. The things I got last year are totally different to this years range.

I have already used the most of these bath bombs and bubble bars. I do love a soak in the bath, especially at this time of year. I think my favourite was the Pumpkin Crumble bubble bar and the Screamo bath bomb. The smells from them were amazing and the Screamo bath bomb was a bit of a surprise when it turned my bath almost black. hehehe

This gastronomic partnership sees the finest air popped popcorn, hand coated in smooth buttery caramel and finished with 17% real Budweiser beer, perfectly capturing the American icon’s signature smooth taste!

Budweiser Gourmet Popcorn

This really does have a taste of Budweiser beer to it but it's also tastes like popcorn which is really confusing but at the the same time it is really tasty. I was taste testing it and just kept eating it, I thought I should stop and actually save some for Stu since it is meant to be for him. hehehe

Marmite Popcorn - £4.00

Expertly hand crafted by Joe and his master pastry chefs, this innovative collaboration has been made using only the finest all natural ingredients and of course the distinctive British spread. The air popped popcorn has been generously coated in smooth, buttery caramel and lovely Marmite, making a delightful sweet and salty snack!

I couldn't bring myself to try this, I am not a fan of Marmite. It's true, it's either something that you either love or hate. The kids loved it though, they said the sweet and savoury taste was so good.

If you can't just decide on one flavour of gourmet popcorn Joe & Seph’s have the Ultimate Gourmet Popcorn Selection.

This box features the famous Salted Caramel, award winning Toffee Apple & Cinnamon, Caramel & Belgian Chocolate, the popular Orange Chocolate, Caramel & White Chocolate and Classic Caramel Popcorn in individual 7g mini packs. Each box contains two packs of each!

If the special man in your life wants something a bit sweeter there is the Milk Chocolate Popcorn Slab which costs £8.

Lovingly handmade in Joe & Seph’s London kitchens, the satisfyingly crunchy popcorn and melt-in-the-mouth chocolate is not only dangerously moreish but also gluten-free, vegetarian friendly, with no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives.

Is there any of these that the special man in your life would like to try?

A unique gift with meaning from Treedom.

This week many of our minds are turning to our mother’s or special ladies in our life and how to show them we love them this Mother’s Day. I love the presents that my girls make or buy me but the one's that mean the most to me are one's that are a total surprise and last for years to come!

Treedom is the sustainable tree planting platform that allows you to give a unique gift with meaning this year.

Treedom

Gifting a remote tree through Treedom, where you can follow the positive impact of the tree planting on the local community and track the growth of your tree is the perfect eco friendly personalised gift.

Since its foundation in 2010 in Florence more than 3.000.000 trees have been planted in Africa, South America and Italy. All trees are planted directly by local farmers and bring environmental, social and financial benefits to their communities.

Like a mother, the trees planted by Treedom are resilient and provide for and nurture their communities. Gifting with Treedom will help foster generations to come. They have grown over 3 million trees worldwide and are on a mission to plant 10 million trees in the next 3 years to help combat the climate crisis, biodiversity loss and empower local farming communities.

How it works:

trees from Treedom

Choose the tree you like the most:
With over 45 trees to choose from, you can personalise it to Mum’s favourite. Your tree will be photographed, geolocalized and will have an online page. You will be able to find out about the project to which it will give life, customize it with your message and if you want, gift it to someone special.

Follow it's project:
Your tree will grow in one of the nurseries of the projects we carry out in various countries around the world. When it is big enough, it will be handed over to a farmer to be planted and cared for, so that it can grow, absorb CO2 and bear fruit.

Improve the air you breathe:
As it grows, your tree will absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and will release oxygen, thus improving the quality of the air we all breath.

You can send the gift of a tree a few ways:
By email: If you choose email delivery, you can opt to send the gift now or on a date of your choice. Treedom will take care of the rest!
By card: Once you’ve chosen the perfect card, you can personalise it with a dedication and the recipient’s name. You can download and print it (preferably on recycled paper!) at any time.
By link: Copy the link and send it to the person of your choice. You can send it via WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, SMS, etc.: click on the link to copy it, then paste it into your message. Please note: if you choose a social networking site, remember to send the link in a private message!

I think giving the gift of a tree is a fantastic idea. You can reach anyone, anytime, with a thought that goes straight to the heart and do a little good for the world too.

Have you ever gifted a tree? Is it something you would do?
