Spring cleaning your digital life: Decluttering your devices!

Spring is well and truly here and it's sometimes feeling a little like summer so while we’re all busy sorting out our wardrobes and deep cleaning the house there’s one area we often neglect our digital lives! If your phone storage is constantly full, your laptop takes ages to start up or your inbox has more unread emails than you care to admit then it’s time for a digital declutter!

Laptop Near Plant

Here’s how to freshen up your tech and reclaim some space both physically and mentally.

Declutter Your Inbox
That dreaded email notification number doesn’t have to haunt you forever! Start by unsubscribing from newsletters you never read. You can click through each email and unsubscribe or there apps and programmes which do it for you. Next delete old emails you no longer need and create folders for the important ones to keep them in order. I hate seeing a full email inbox, my youngest never clears hers and it makes me cringe when I see that she has thousands of unread emails.

Clear Out Your Phone
How many of your apps do you actually use? Delete the ones you never open, clear out old text conversations and remove duplicate or blurry photos. Transferring pictures to cloud storage or an external hard drive can also free up space. Don’t forget to clear your cache and temporary files for a performance boost! I got a new phone a couple of months ago and it was a great way to start afresh with just having apps that I use.

Tidy Up Your Laptop or Computer
A cluttered desktop is the digital equivalent of a messy room. Organise your files into folders, delete anything outdated and empty your recycle bin. Consider backing up important documents to an external drive or cloud storage to prevent future headaches. I will admit the desktop on my laptop is chaos and cluttered but I do use everything on it.

Sort Through Your Social Media
Spring cleaning applies to your social media too! Unfollow accounts that no longer inspire you and update your privacy settings. If you haven’t changed your passwords in a while now’s a good time to do that too.

Streamline Your Subscriptions
From streaming services to apps and software it’s easy to forget what you’re actually paying for. Go through your bank statements and cancel anything you no longer use your wallet will thank you! For a few months after getting Netflix with our Sky subscription I still subscribed to my account and ended up paying for a few months. Oops.

Refresh Your Digital Workspace
If you spend a lot of time on your computer, give your digital workspace a little refresh. Change your wallpaper, organise your bookmarks and try out a productivity app to keep you on track. A clean, organised space can do wonders for motivation!

Back Up Everything
Now that you’ve tidied up your devices, make sure you don’t lose any important files. Use cloud storage, an external hard drive or both for extra security. You never know when technology might fail you!

A digital spring clean doesn’t just help your devices run better it also helps clear your mind. Less clutter means less stress, so take a little time to refresh your digital life and enjoy the benefits of a more organised, streamlined space.

Do you ever have a digital declutter?

Mental Health Awareness Week: Community and parenting older kids!

It is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year, the 2025 theme is Community! It is a word that feels more important than ever. As a parent of teenage girls I’ve came to realise just how much community matters when it comes to supporting not only their mental health but mine too. We all need a little help sometimes!

a black and white photo of the word mental health

Raising teenagers and being there for young adults is no small task! There is so much pressure on them now with social media, academic pressure, body image struggles and friendship dramas. Then throw in anxiety, mood swings, occasional slamming of doors and the eternal "I’m fine" when you know full well they’re not. It can feel overwhelming but we're not in it alone and that’s where community comes in!

When we think of the word community we often imagine neighbours, schools or local groups and it can be those things but community is also about connection, the people you lean on, the ones who understand, the ones who remind you you’re not failing when everything feels like a mess.

As a parent over the years my community has included:

Other mums at the school gate who’ve whispered, "Mine’s the same. It’s not just you." It was such a reassurance to know I wasn't in this parenting lark alone.
Online groups on blogs where parents share their worries, wins and occasional cries in the car. It is good to connect with real people who are going through the same things.
Teachers, youth workers and counsellors who’ve taken the time to see my girls for who they are!
And, surprisingly even the girls themselves when they open up and remind me just how strong, insightful and emotionally intelligent this generation can be.

Teens and young adults today are navigating a minefield of emotional challenges. Social media has given them access to constant comparison, unrealistic beauty standards and the pressure to be on it all the time. It has caused no end of drama, worry and stress for my family over the years, sometimes I do wish I could just take it away from them. In the past I have but they are at an age now where they are more sensible in how they use it and realise that not everything they read and see online is true. Then you add in the stress of school, college friendships, hormones and a world that feels increasingly uncertain, it’s really no wonder they’re struggling!

As a mum, I’ve had late night chats that started with “I’m just tired” and turned into deep heart to hearts where everything has came pouring out. I’ve watched my girls spiral from small worries into big anxieties and I’ve felt helpless, wanting to take away their pain but not always knowing how. That’s why community is so important because when our kids feel supported, connected and safe they cope better and when we feel supported, we’re able to help them more!

Community starts in the home. We’re their first safe space for out teenagers and young adults even if they sometimes act like we’re the last people they want to talk to. Here are a few things we try in my home:

Open conversations! Not just asking how was your day but what’s been on your mind lately or has anything felt tricky today? Anything can be talked about here!

We have a no judgement zone! I remind them and myself that it’s okay to feel angry, sad, confused or just “meh. All those feelings that we feel are valid!

Celebrate the small wins! Getting out of bed on a tough day, speaking up in class, sending a tricky message to a friend all of those things matter and if they bring a positive result they are a win!

Encourage rest! Not every hour needs to be productive, we all need some down time!

Model self care! I try to show them what taking care of myself looks like whether that’s saying no, taking a walk or doing something just because it makes me happy!

While we’re busy trying to be our teenagers and young adults rocks, we often forget that we need support too. Parenting teens can be lonely at times especially when you don't have that connection with other mums at the school gates. It was so much easier when they were little and I would speak to other mums, now I don't know the parents of my daughters friends as I am not at the school gates.

Mental Health Awareness Week is a good excuse to reach out and reconnect. Maybe it’s checking in with another parent you haven’t heard from in a while, maybe it’s attending a workshop or finding a podcast or book that speaks to you, about what you are experiencing! Connecting with other parents even if it’s just in a online group can be a lifeline.

The more we talk about parenting and mental health the less alone we all feel. This week is a reminder that we don’t have to do this parenting thing in isolation. We’re allowed to ask for help, we’re allowed to not have all the answers and we’re allowed to admit when we’re struggling. Our teenagers and young adults are watching us more closely than we realise. When they see us leaning on others, building supportive friendships, talking honestly about mental health it gives them permission to do the same.

If you’re struggling, please know you’re not alone. There’s support available and it’s okay to ask for it. Whether it’s a GP, a therapist, a local support group or a charity helpline help is out there and it can get better!

How to make your home smell like spring!

Spring is here, the clocks have changed, the lighter nights are here, the flowers are blooming and everything feels new. As the world outside feels brighter why not bring those fresh, light, scents indoors too?

I always like to walk into my house and have it smelling good and a spring smell immediately lifts your mood. Here are some easy ways to make your home smell like spring all season long.

Blossom tree

Open the windows and let the fresh air in!
It is such a simple way to freshen up the smell of your home but one of the best ways to make your home smell like spring is to let the fresh outdoor air circulate through your house. I open all of the windows and the back door each morning and I let the fresh air in.  After months of closed windows and stuffy rooms it’s refreshing to breath in the crisp spring air. If you're worried about allergens you can use air purifiers or screens to keep things at bay while still allowing the breeze to flow through.

Introduce spring scented candles!
Candles are a fantastic way to bring in the scents of spring. I love burning candles all year and have some that are perfect for spring. Look for candles with fresh, floral or fruity notes. Scents like jasmine, lavender, lilac, peony or citrus fruits like lemon, orange and grapefruit are all perfect for capturing that fresh vibrant feel of the season.

Use essential oils for a natural touch!
If you prefer something a bit more natural or want to avoid synthetic fragrances essential oils can be a great alternative. You can use a diffuser to disperse the scent of oils like lavender, eucalyptus or lemon throughout your home. I use essential oils upstairs and I am loving the fruity scents at the moment. For a more spring like fragrance mix a few drops of lemon or orange essential oil with some fresh rosemary or basil. It creates an energizing and herby aroma that feels just like spring!

Bring in fresh flowers!
Fresh flowers are a no brainer when it comes to spring. Not only do they add colour and beauty to your home but they also fill the air with their natural fragrance. Choose springtime favourites like daffodils, tulips, hyacinths or peonies. I always have a vase filled with daffodils at this time of year, they are cheap and cheerful!

Make your own spring scented room spray!
Room sprays are another great way to refresh your space. You can easily make your own spring scented spray at home. Simply combine water, a few drops of your favourite essential oils (like lavender, rose and citrus) and a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Shake it up and spritz the air to refresh your home. You can also use this spray on pillows, curtains and furniture for an added burst of freshness.

Clean with fresh Spring inspired products!
Spring cleaning isn’t just about tidying up; it’s also an opportunity to freshen up your space with new scents. Switch to cleaning products with natural, light fragrances like lemon, pine or eucalyptus. There are plenty of eco friendly cleaning products that not only clean well but also leave your home smelling fresh.

Bake something fresh!
Nothing evokes the feeling of spring like the smell of something fresh baking in the oven. Make something light and refreshing like lemon drizzle cake, fruit scones or a batch of homemade shortbread.

Add a touch of Spring to your laundry!
Spring is a great time to switch up your laundry routine and use a fresh scent. Look for detergents or fabric softeners with light floral or citrus scents or try adding a few drops of essential oils like lavender or rose into the dryer. This simple step will make your home smell fresh and floral all season long.

What do you do to bring that Spring smell into your home?

How to prevent kitchen fires before they start!

If you asked me what the biggest cause of house fires was I would have confidently said candles without any hesitation. It makes sense: an open flame, wax melting, people leaving them burning unattended. A classic fire hazard and as someone who loves a good scented candle, I have one for every season. I’ve always been super careful about where I place them. No candles near curtains, no burning overnight, and always blowing them out before leaving the room.

So imagine my shock when I Googled the leading cause of house fires and learned that it isn’t candles, it’s cooking appliances! Yep, right there in my own kitchen where I potter about making endless cups of tea and occasionally burn things is actually the biggest danger zone!

firefighters firefighting

So since I’m now armed with this alarming knowledge, I thought I’d share some kitchen fire safety tips!!

Never leave cooking unattended!
We’ve all been there you put something on cooking and think, I’ll just pop into the other room for a second. Next thing you know, you’re deep in a social media rabbit hole and the only thing reminding you that you were cooking is the smell of something burning. I have done this so many times and go running in such a panic! Fires can start so quickly especially with oil or unattended boiling pots. If you need to step away, turn the heat off first!

Keep anything flammable away from flames!
Tea towels, oven gloves, wooden utensils or even that pile of post you haven’t sorted yet none of it should be anywhere near the hob. One stray spark or a gas flame catching the edge of a cloth and you’ve got a problem. I stopped using tea towels to pick up pans when I had a scare and one caught on fire, now I use oven gloves but keep them away from the flames.

Beware of hot oil!
If you’re cooking with oil, keep a close eye on it. Never throw water on a grease fire it’ll make it worse and could cause flames to spread rapidly. Instead turn off the heat and smother the flames with a metal lid, baking tray or a damp cloth.

Don’t store things in the oven!
I used to be guilty of this one. Storing baking trays and pans in the oven seems harmless until you forget they’re in there and preheat the oven with something melt-able inside. Fire hazard alert!

Check your appliances!
Old or dodgy appliances are a sneaky fire risk. That ancient toaster that smells suspiciously of burnt crumbs? Time to clean it out or replace it altogether. Frayed wires and overloaded sockets in the kitchen are also major hazards so it’s worth doing a quick check now and then. Also make sure you are up to date with your gas safety checks if you have a gas cooker!

Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen!
Not all fire extinguishers are the same! For the kitchen, you need a dry chemical extinguisher which works on electrical and grease fires. If a fire does break out, you’ll be glad you have it nearby.

Test your smoke alarms!
This one seems obvious, but when was the last time you actually tested yours? They should be installed near but not directly in the kitchen and checked regularly. If yours has a habit of going off every time you make toast don’t just take the battery out, move the alarm or improve ventilation instead.

Have a fire escape plan!
This might sound dramatic but in an emergency, knowing what to do matters. Make sure everyone in your home knows how to get out quickly and where to meet outside. It’s one of those things you hope you’ll never need but if you do, it could save lives.

While I’ll still be careful with my candles, I’m not giving those up, I’ll now be cautious in the kitchen. A few small changes can make a big difference and if it means I never have to call the fire brigade because I set fire to my dinner, I’m all for it!

Have you ever had a kitchen fire?

How to celebrate Mother's Day on a budget!

It is Mother's Day here in the UK on Sunday and I am really looking forward to a day of getting spoilt from my girls. I am not fussed about the gifts, they are of course nice but it's the attention that they give me and the time I spend with them is worth more than anything money can buy.

happy mother's day signage and plants

Love and gratitude doesn't have to come with a hefty price tag and here are some ideas to show appreciation for the mums, grandmas and the mother figures in our lives!

Breakfast in bed or a homemade meal!
There’s something special about waking up to the smell of a delicious breakfast made with love. A simple yet thoughtful homemade meal can go a long way. Even a cup of tea and a slice or two of toast is always greatly appreciated. If breakfast isn’t an option preparing her favourite lunch or dinner is just as meaningful. I love a day off from doing the cooking on Mother's Day and I am expecting the girls to make me at least a cup of tea and my lunch!

Personalised Handmade Gifts!
A gift made by hand often holds more sentimental value than anything shop bought. A heartfelt card, making a scrapbook filled with cherished memories or even writing a letter expressing your gratitude. I used to love the cards my girls made me while they were at school and they always meant more than the shop bought one's. I still have them all stored upstairs in the memory boxes.

A Thoughtful Memory Jar!
Create a memory jar filled with small notes recalling favourite moments, reasons you love her or inspiring quotes. Use colourful paper to make it extra special. She can read one whenever she needs a little pick me up making this a gift that keeps on giving. I have told my girls they need to do this for me but it's something they never quite get around to. I have said before they leave home they have to, just so I am not sad without them here. hehehe

A Relaxing Spa Day at Home!
Treat her to a spa like experience without the expensive price tag. Run a warm bubble bath with essential oils or a bath bomb, light some candles and play soothing music. When my girls were little Mother's Day was the one day where they would let me have a soak in the bath in peace, there were no knocks at the door or random questions being asked. Offer a DIY facial using natural ingredients like honey and yogurt or give her a gentle hand or foot massage. A cup of herbal tea or glass of fizz can add a luxurious touch.

Go for a Walk or Picnic!
Sometimes the simplest activities create the best memories. A walk through a beautiful park or along the beach can be the perfect way to spend quality time together. Pack some homemade snacks or a flask of tea and enjoy a lovely picnic outdoors.

Watch a Film or TV Series Together!
A cosy movie night or TV marathon with her favourite films or shows can be a lovely way to relax together. Make it extra special with homemade popcorn, comfy blankets and maybe even a cup of hot chocolate. I have already said that we are going to spend some time together and watch a film. I have chosen Mufasa as it is released on Disney+ later this week.

Do the Chores for Her!
A break from housework is a gift any mum would appreciate. Whether it’s washing up, doing the laundry or tidying the living room, taking on a few chores for the day can be a wonderful surprise. My girls have always done more around the house on Mother's Day and it is such a lovely treat to have a day off from the housework.

Create a Playlist of Meaningful Songs!
Put together a playlist of songs that remind you of her or that you know she loves. Whether it’s nostalgic tunes from her younger years or songs that make her smile, this personal touch will make her feel truly appreciated.

A DIY Afternoon Tea!
Instead of heading to an expensive cafe set up an afternoon tea at home. Bake some simple treats like scones or cupcakes, brew a pot of tea and arrange everything nicely on the table. Add a few fresh flowers for an extra touch of charm.

Simply Spend Time Together!
At the end of the day, the most valuable gift you can give is your time and attention. Whether it’s reminiscing over old photos, playing a board game or just having a heartfelt conversation, being present is what truly matters.

Mother’s Day isn’t about how much you spend, it’s about showing appreciation, love and gratitude. Sending love and hugs to you all that are without your mum's and find this time of year hard.

What do you have planned for Mother's Day?

The best pancake toppings for pancake day!

Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday is one of the most delicious days of the year! It’s the perfect excuse to flip, stack, and smother pancakes with all sorts of tasty toppings. Whether you prefer classic combinations or something a little more adventurous there’s a topping for everyone!

Pancakes

Here are some of the best pancake toppings to try this Pancake Day!

The Classic Lemon and Sugar
You simply can’t beat the traditional lemon and sugar topping. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a generous sprinkle of sugar create the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. It’s nostalgic, simple and absolutely delicious.

Golden Syrup
For a true British classic, golden syrup is a must. This is my favourite! That thick, sticky sweetness drizzling over a warm pancake is pure heaven. If you want to go all out add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.

Nutella and Banana
Chocolate and banana are a match made in pancake heaven. Spread a generous layer of Nutella over your pancake and top with sliced bananas for a rich, creamy, and slightly healthy(ish) treat.

Maple Syrup and Bacon
If you love a sweet and savoury combination this one’s for you. Crispy bacon paired with smooth, sweet maple syrup creates a mouth watering mix of flavours. It’s a favourite for those who enjoy a little American influence on Pancake Day.

Berries and Cream
For a fresh and fruity option pile your pancakes high with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries or all three! Add a dollop of whipped cream or Greek yogurt to make it even more delicious. This one feels fancy but is super easy to put together.

Lotus Biscoff Spread and Crushed Biscuits
Biscoff lovers, this is your moment! Spread that caramelised goodness over your pancake and sprinkle crushed Biscoff biscuits on top for an extra crunch. It’s rich, indulgent and utterly irresistible.

Peanut Butter and Jam
This one’s for the peanut butter fans. The classic PB&J combination works wonderfully on pancakes, giving you a mix of sweet, salty and nutty goodness. Go for smooth or crunchy peanut butter depending on your preference.

Chocolate Chips and Marshmallows
For an ultra-sweet treat, try scattering chocolate chips and mini marshmallows over your pancake. If you give it a quick blast under the grill the marshmallows turn all gooey and melty like a pancake s’mores!

Apple and Cinnamon
For a cosy twist cook some sliced apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a little brown sugar. The warm, spiced apples pair beautifully with soft pancakes making this a comforting and delicious choice.

Savoury Cheese and Ham
Pancakes don’t have to be sweet! A savoury option like melted cheese and ham is a great alternative if you fancy something different. Add a little Dijon mustard for an extra kick of flavour.

Honey and Greek Yogurt
For a light and refreshing option drizzle honey over your pancake and add a spoonful of Greek yogurt. It’s a simple yet satisfying combination that works well as a slightly healthier choice.

What do you like on your pancakes?

Share Our Lives! What not to do when you want to fall asleep!

It's the 2nd week of the month which means it's time to join in the the Share Our Lives linky. This months prompt is Tips for Falling Asleep which is a really tough one for me and as I am thinking about this blog post I don't think you are going to get many tips from me.

I remember being a child arguing with my parents that I didn't want to go to bed and I definitely didn't want to go to sleep and not much has changed now apart from the fact I am the adult now and responsible for my own bedtime. I am more of a night owl so having to go to sleep when I don't really want to really doesn't seem fair even when I know the alarm clock is set for 7am the next morning. In theory I know what I have to do but implementing it is hard.

White Bed Next to White Accent Table

This is what not to do when you want to fall asleep!

Don’t watch just one more episode!
It never is one more episode. One episode turns into three and suddenly you’ve watched an entire season. Netflix’s “Are you still watching?” message is just a polite way of saying, please go to bed!

Don’t drink coffee after 7pm!
You’d think this one would be obvious but not for me, sometimes I really want a coffee after I have eaten my tea. I did get decaf coffee but there isn't a big enough range of it. Sometimes I want a mocha or a flavoured latte and it doesn't come in decaf.

Don’t try relaxing with your phone!
Scrolling through social media to unwind is like saying you’ll just browse Amazon without buying anything. Next thing you know it’s 1am and you have fell down a rabbit hole watching an 18 part documentary on TikTok.

Don’t start a deep cleaning project!
For some reason, the urge to reorganise the living room always hits me hardest at 11pm but moving the sofa and cleaning behind it does not help me sleep!

Don’t eat a full meal!
A little midnight snack is OK but 4 slices of toast and a bowl of cereal is no good. Your body will be too busy digesting food to even consider falling asleep!

Don’t check your emails!
Nothing good ever comes from checking your emails before bed. At best you’ll stress about something that can wait until morning!

Don’t start Googling random symptoms!
You’ve been feeling a little off lately, so naturally, you decide bedtime is the perfect time to Google what is wrong and convince yourself that you have a rare tropical disease. Spoiler! You don’t and will probably feel better in the morning after some sleep!

Don’t make a life plan!
Lying in bed and thinking about how you’ll change your entire life tomorrow seems productive but it’s just anxiety in a sparkly disguise. Save your grand plans for the morning when you can actually do something about them!

Don’t overthink falling asleep!
Telling yourself I have to sleep right now or the worst is going to happen is the quickest way to ensure you’ll be awake until sunrise. It’s like trying to force a sneeze. Just let it happen naturally or not. Either way, the sun’s coming up eventually.

Do you struggle to fall asleep or are you one of those lucky people who drop off as soon as your head hits the pillow?

10 Ways to declutter your life in January!

January is the month of fresh starts, resolutions and getting our lives in order. It's almost over but wanted to share this blog post. I have been on a mission to declutter throughout this month and I am feeling like I have my house and life in order! Not only that but keeping busy has helped me avoid the January blues a little.

Pile of Covered Books

Here are 10 ways to declutter your life!

Start Small: tackle one drawer or shelf!
The idea of decluttering an entire house can feel overwhelming so start with something manageable. Maybe it’s the junk drawer in the kitchen or a single shelf in your wardrobe. Once you see progress in that one area, you’ll feel motivated to keep going. I started with the kitchen cupboards, moved on to my wardrobe and I have been making my way around the house.

The One year rule!
If you haven’t used something in the past year the chances are you don’t need it. This applies to clothes, gadgets and random household items. Be ruthless! Donate, recycle or toss anything that doesn’t serve a purpose in your current life! I am trying to get the girls to live by this rule as they are hoarders but I have started to be ruthless. Now I just need my fella to throw that bag or wires and cables out. hehehe

Declutter your digital space!
Our digital lives can be just as messy as our physical spaces. Dedicate some time to deleting old emails, organising your desktop and photos which are stored online and uninstalling apps that you no longer use. I did this in the first week of January and it has made the month so much easier. I got rid of all the emails from Christmas about orders that I had made and offers sent to me and sorted all the photos from 2024 in separate folders.

Purge your pantry!
Expired spices, half empty snacks and cans of soup you’ll never eat! January is a great time to clean out the kitchen. Take stock of what you have and plan meals around items that are nearing their use by date to reduce waste.

Create a maybe box!
For items you’re unsure about getting rid of create a maybe box. Store these items out of sight for a few months. If you haven’t missed them by the start of spring it’s time to let them go.

Set boundaries with your calendar!
Decluttering isn’t just about physical stuff, it’s also about reclaiming your time. Look at your calendar and decide which commitments truly matter. Say no to activities that don’t fit with your priorities or bring you joy.

Adopt the one in one out rule!
For every new item you bring into your home, get rid of one you no longer need. This simple rule prevents clutter from building up again and makes you more mindful of your purchases. I started to do this last year with clothes, it really did make me think about what I was buying. Did I really need that dress if it meant I had to part with an older one.

Declutter your mind!
Start a journal, practice mindfulness or set aside time to meditate. These things can help you sort through mental clutter, let go of lingering worries and focus on what really matters.

Organise your finances!
January is the perfect time to tidy up your financial life. Review your subscriptions, cancel ones you no longer use, and set up a budget for the year. Decluttering your finances can free up money for other things that you need.

Get the family involved!
Decluttering doesn’t have to be a solo mission. Involve your family by making it a fun challenge. Assign everyone a room or category and see who can clear the most space. The reward could be a takeaway or a trip out.

Have you been decluttering over the last month?

Picky plates for lunch!

Sometimes, the best lunches are the ones that don’t require much effort. On busy days, when time is tight and energy is low the idea of cooking or even assembling a sandwich can feel like too much. Enter the humble picky plate! It is just a collection of little nibbles thrown together on a plate. It’s part snack, part meal, 100% satisfying and my go to lunch lately!

Picky plate

Picky plates are fast. There’s no cooking involved unless you want to throw in something like a boiled egg or heat up leftovers. They’re flexible whether you’re aiming for a balanced meal or just want to use up odds and ends from the fridge. You can tailor them to your cravings, dietary needs or whatever random bits of food are lying around. They can be as healthy or indulgent as you like! You can keep it light and fresh with veggies and hummus or lean into comfort with cheese and crackers. It’s entirely up to you!

The one above included grapes, salted crackers, pineapple and almond soft cheese and mini savoury eggs. The one below has the pineapple cheese, a tangerine, slices of salami, seafood sticks, some pork pie and grapes, I also had a packet of crisps that wouldn't fit on the plate. And yes, I do always use old plates that the kids used to use when they were little. They are bigger than a side plate and smaller than a dinner plate, just the right size for a picky lunch.

Another picky plate

How to Build the Perfect Picky Plate!

The beauty of a picky plate is that there are no rules. However, if you’re looking for a bit of guidance here’s a tried and true formula to make your plate satisfying and delicious:

Protein: This could be a boiled egg, a handful of nuts, some sliced meat or even leftover grilled chicken.

Crunchy Stuff: Add a bit of crunch to keep things interesting. Crackers, pretzels, breadsticks or even tortilla chips or crisps work well here.

Fresh Produce: Balance things out with some fruits or veggies. Carrot sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, apple wedges or berries are great options.

A little indulgence: A dollop of hummus, a smear of peanut butter, a couple of chocolate squares or a spoonful of pickle elevate your picky plate to something a bit more special.

Picky plates aren’t just for adults they’re perfect for kids too. Let everyone assemble their own plate from a selection of ingredients and suddenly lunch becomes an activity instead of a battle. Kids love the variety and the freedom to choose their favourites and you’ll love how easy it is to pull together.

In a world where we’re often told to meal prep, cook and plan ahead picky plates feel like a breath of fresh air. The possibilities are endless, and that’s what makes them fun, no two lunches ever need to look the same.

Do you have picky plates for lunch? What’s your go to combo?

How to save time on the chores around your home!

Wow! Time flies! This will be my third year linking up with a fantastic bunch of ladies sharing some of my life with the Share Our Lives linky! At the end of December I saw the list of prompts for each month and I am excited for them! This month we're starting off with Saving time on our chores!

Cleaning supplies

Doing the housework and chores around the house is no fun, well I don't find it fun at all. I don't wake up and think what a glorious day to scrub the toilet but unless you want to live in a dirt filled house some cleaning is required! There are ways to save time on the chores around your home and I am sharing them.

Declutter first, clean later!
The less stuff you have, the less you have to clean, it’s that simple!! Take a good look around your home and ask yourself if you really need all those knick knacks, old magazines or random gadgets gathering dust. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and ask, “Does this bring me joy?” If the answer is no, it’s time to say goodbye. I have always found that when there is less clutter it looks tidier and it certainly makes it easier to clean.

Do a good enough clean!
Perfection is overrated. Do you really need to polish the kettle until you can see your reflection? If the sink is shiny and the kitchen sides are crumb free, you’re winning! Think of it as the difference between Pinterest clean where you just clean what is necessary and Mother in law clean where everything inside and out of everywhere is spotless.

Multitask!
If you're waiting for the kettle to boil wipe down the kitchen sides while you’re at it or if you’re binging your latest TV obsession fold laundry at the same time.

Go for All in One cleaning products!
Why juggle five different bottles when one multi purpose cleaner can do the job? Look for products that can tackle multiple surfaces, like glass, counters and tiles. You’ll save time switching between products and make your cleaning caddy much lighter.

Delegate like a boss!
Why do all the work yourself when you can enlist help! Got kids, perfect they're unpaid workers but shorter. Turn chores into a game: who can pick up the most toys in two minutes or who can match socks the fastest. Convince your partner that vacuuming is a “fun couple’s activity” or that taking out the bins is a workout. Bribery works, too. A cup of tea or a cheeky biscuit can be a great motivator!

Invest in time saving gadgets!
Technology is your friend. Robot vacuums are basically pets that clean up after you and don’t get me started on cordless vacuums, no more wrestling with a plug that doesn’t quite reach the corner. If a gadget can shave minutes off your chore time, it’s worth it. Treat yourself!

The 10 minute dash!
Set a timer for 10 minutes and see how much you can get done. You’ll be amazed at how motivating it is to race the clock. It’s like being on a game show, except the grand prize is a clean living room and the satisfaction of being an adult who has their life sort of together.

Have a cleaning playlist!
I remember when my girls were at school the teachers would play the Mission Impossible theme to motivate them to tidy the classroom. Make a list of songs which motivate you, one's you can sing and dance along to help! You can also use the playlist as a timer!

Lower your standards!
Sometimes, the best way to save time on chores is to not do them. Nobody ever died from skipping a week of mopping. Dim the lights, light a candle, and suddenly your slightly dusty home looks cosy instead of chaotic. Remember: dust is just a protective coating for your furniture!

Reward yourself!
Every chore session deserves a reward. Cleaned the bathroom? That’s a brownie worthy achievement. Tackled the pile of dishes? A cup of tea and a sit down are in order. Positive reinforcement isn’t just for training pets it works on humans too!

At the end of the day chores are just chores! They’re not meant to take over your life. Remember, a house doesn’t have to be perfect to feel like home!

Things to do in January to make 2025 the best year yet!

Ahh! January! The month of fresh starts, crisp mornings and hope for the new year! While some might see January as a dreary, post Christmas slump, others see it as a blank canvas, a chance to set the tone for the months ahead. Here are some ways that you can start the year and make 2025 the best year yet!

A person's hand holding the number twenty twenty five

Set Goals, not resolutions!
Resolutions often end up abandoned by February so why not focus on meaningful goals? Start by writing a list of things you’d love to achieve this year. I do this with my post "This time next year". A goal is more achievable than trying to stick to doing something every day!

Create a winter bucket list!
Who says bucket lists are just for summer? January is the perfect time to embrace the season. Add cosy activities like having a hot chocolate tasting night, going on a frosty woodland walk or trying your hand at a new winter recipe! If you’re feeling adventurous why not book an ice skating session or something more active!

Refresh your space!
A tidy home equals a tidy mind, right? January is a brilliant time to declutter, reorganise and refresh your living space. You don’t have to go full on Marie Kondo but even sorting out one area: a wardrobe, a kitchen drawer, or your workspace can bring a surprising sense of calm. Add some cheerful houseplants or a new scented candle to brighten up those shorter days!

Prioritise self care!
The hustle and bustle of December often leave us feeling drained. January is the time to refuel your mind and body. Start simple: drink more water, get to bed earlier or carve out 10 minutes for meditation. Treat yourself to a spa evening at home, bubble baths, face masks and all the trimmings. The goal is to recharge so you can face the year with your best self forward!

Plan something to look forward to!
Having something on the horizon can do wonders for your mood. Book tickets to a concert, plan a weekend getaway or schedule a catch up with friends. If funds are tight post Christmas plan something low cost like a movie night, a dinner at home where everyone brings a dish or a DIY craft session.

Learn something new!
Why not kick off the year by adding a new skill to your repertoire? Sign up for an online course, dive into a new hobby, or finally tackle that foreign language you’ve been meaning to learn. Even small steps—like trying a new recipe or picking up a book on a topic you’re curious about—can spark joy and creativity.

Get outside!
Yes, it’s cold. Yes, it’s tempting to stay under a blanket but stepping outdoors even for a short walk can boost your mood and energy. If you’re lucky enough to get a snow day channel your inner child with a snowball fight or some sledding. No snow? A brisk walk, with a podcast or your favourite tunes can work wonders!

Celebrate small wins!
Take a moment to reflect on 2024. What did you achieve? What made you smile? Celebrating even the smallest wins can remind you of your resilience and give you confidence for what’s to come. Keep a gratitude journal to capture the little things that bring joy throughout January.

Host a January gathering!
Who says socialising has to stop after New Year’s Eve? January is the perfect time for low key get togethers. Invite friends over for a games night or a cosy dinner. Keeping the social energy alive can help you combat any post holiday loneliness.

Embrace the quiet!
Finally, lean into the slower pace of January. After the whirlwind of December it’s okay to let yourself rest. Spend time reading, journaling or just enjoying the stillness. This calm can provide clarity and inspiration for the year ahead.

What tips do you have on how to have a great start to the year?

Sip, don’t slip! How to conquer dry January with ease!

Dry January has become a popular way to kick off the new year with a reset for both mind and body. Last year Stu and I joined in with it and we didn't drink alcohol for the whole of January, February and some of March.

The idea is simple: take a month long break from alcohol but while the idea is straightforward, carrying it out can sometimes be challenging especially if you’re used to a social life where drinks are the norm or you’re unwinding at the end of a long day with a glass of wine.

Here are some ideas to help with Dry January!

Set a clear intention!
Before starting Dry January it helps to have a clear why! Are you doing it to improve your health, save money or see how your body feels without alcohol? Maybe it’s a combination of reasons. When you know why you’re doing something, it’s easier to stick with it. For us it was just about having a break after the excess of the Christmas and saving a bit of money.

Prepare your home!
Out of sight, out of mind! Remove any temptations from your home by storing or donating any alcohol you have lying around. If you’re someone who enjoys a drink as part of your evening ritual, replace it with something new. Stock up on herbal teas, sparkling water or alcohol free alternatives. There are some fantastic booze free wines, beers and spirits available that can make the change feel less daunting.

Plan alcohol free social activities!
One of the trickiest parts of Dry January can be navigating social situations. Let your friends and family know you’re taking a break from drinking so they can support you or plan activities that don’t centre around alcohol. Instead of meeting at a pub suggest going for a coffee instead. Having a plan helps you avoid those awkward moments when someone asks, “Why aren’t you drinking?”

Find delicious non-alcoholic alternatives!
Gone are the days when your only non-alcoholic options were fizzy pop or juice. The market for alcohol free drinks has exploded with options that mimic alcoholic drinks. Try alcohol free gins, wines or craft beers. I found some great offers on alcohol free mocktails in January as the supermarkets were on board with the Dry January thing.

Track Your Progress!
Keeping track of your Dry January journey can be incredibly motivating. Use a journal or an app to note how you’re feeling each day and the positive changes you’re noticing. Many people report better sleep, improved mood, clearer skin and more energy after a few weeks without alcohol. Seeing these benefits written down can make you feel great! I had more energy and felt fab on a Sunday morning waking up without a fuzzy head!

Focus on self care!
Without alcohol in the picture, you might find yourself with more time and energy to devote to other forms of self care. Pick up a new hobby, dive into a good book or treat yourself to a long bath. Use this month as an opportunity to prioritise your well being and find new ways to relax and unwind that don’t involve alcohol.

Celebrate your wins!
Every day you choose not to drink is an achievement. Celebrate your progress and reward yourself in healthy ways. Maybe you’ve saved money by not buying drinks, use those savings to treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting or simply take a moment to reflect on how proud you are of sticking to your commitment!

 Think beyond January!
As Dry January comes to an end, you might feel tempted to dive back into old habits. Take some time to reflect on how the month went. Did you notice significant changes in your health, mood, or daily routine? Perhaps you’ll decide to continue drinking less frequently or keep certain alcohol-free habits you’ve enjoyed. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

Are you taking part in Dry January?

Miniature Gadgets
For the tech savvy person in your life, look for small gadgets like a phone stand, a portable phone charger or a mini USB fan. These items are not only practical but also add a touch of fun to everyday routines.

Festive Scented Candles
A small scented candle can bring a cosy, festive vibe to any space. Go for seasonal scents like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla. These mini indulgences can brighten up a room, make any recipient feel special and you can pick them up for £1 in some of the Pound type shops.

Creative Stationery
From quirky pens and notebooks to colourful washi tapes and sticky notes, creative stationery is a hit with anyone who loves to jot down ideas, doodle or plan. You can often find fun and functional options for under pence never mind pounds.

Pocket Sized Games
A small puzzle, a deck of cards or a travel sized board game can be a great way to spark joy. These items are perfect for family gatherings or cosy nights in providing entertainment for all ages.

Hand Creams and Lip Balms
Winter weather can be tough on the skin, so a lovely hand cream or a nourishing lip balm makes for a thoughtful gift. Choose ones with appealing scents or natural ingredients for an extra touch of luxury.

Mini Plants
A tiny succulent or cactus can bring a bit of green into any space without requiring much care. These little plants are perfect for brightening up desks or windowsills and are often available at budget friendly prices.

Reusable Tote Bags
Compact and eco friendly, a reusable tote bag is both practical and stylish. Choose one with a fun design or a clever slogan to add a bit of personality.

 Novelty Keyrings
From quirky animal designs to miniature tools or symbols of favourite hobbies, novelty keyrings are an excellent way to add a bit of fun to daily routines. They’re small, inexpensive and often make people smile.

Gourmet Treats
Chocolate, flavoured nuts or a small packet of gourmet coffee or tea can be a delightful treat. Go for unique flavours or packaging to make these edible gifts feel a bit more special. My dad loves different flavoured Chutneys and I always get him some from B&M. Usually under £5 for about 9 mini jars.

Travel Sized Toiletries
Think mini hand sanitisers, travel shampoos or bath bombs. These items are handy for anyone who travels or just loves to pamper themselves a bit.

Eco Friendly Items
Consider bamboo straws, reusable cutlery sets, or beeswax wraps. These sustainable choices are both practical and kind to the planet, making them a great option for eco conscious friends and family.

Personalised Ornaments
For a festive touch, look for small, customizable ornaments. They can be personalized with names, dates or special messages, making them a memorable addition to any Christmas tree.

What else can you think of? What do you put in stockings for people?
