It's the 2nd week of the month which means it's time to join in the the Share Our Lives linky. This months prompt is Tips for Falling Asleep which is a really tough one for me and as I am thinking about this blog post I don't think you are going to get many tips from me.
I remember being a child arguing with my parents that I didn't want to go to bed and I definitely didn't want to go to sleep and not much has changed now apart from the fact I am the adult now and responsible for my own bedtime. I am more of a night owl so having to go to sleep when I don't really want to really doesn't seem fair even when I know the alarm clock is set for 7am the next morning. In theory I know what I have to do but implementing it is hard.
This is what not to do when you want to fall asleep!
Don’t watch just one more episode!
It never is one more episode. One episode turns into three and suddenly you’ve watched an entire season. Netflix’s “Are you still watching?” message is just a polite way of saying, please go to bed!
Don’t drink coffee after 7pm!
You’d think this one would be obvious but not for me, sometimes I really want a coffee after I have eaten my tea. I did get decaf coffee but there isn't a big enough range of it. Sometimes I want a mocha or a flavoured latte and it doesn't come in decaf.
Don’t try relaxing with your phone!
Scrolling through social media to unwind is like saying you’ll just browse Amazon without buying anything. Next thing you know it’s 1am and you have fell down a rabbit hole watching an 18 part documentary on TikTok.
Don’t start a deep cleaning project!
For some reason, the urge to reorganise the living room always hits me hardest at 11pm but moving the sofa and cleaning behind it does not help me sleep!
Don’t eat a full meal!
A little midnight snack is OK but 4 slices of toast and a bowl of cereal is no good. Your body will be too busy digesting food to even consider falling asleep!
Don’t check your emails!
Nothing good ever comes from checking your emails before bed. At best you’ll stress about something that can wait until morning!
Don’t start Googling random symptoms!
You’ve been feeling a little off lately, so naturally, you decide bedtime is the perfect time to Google what is wrong and convince yourself that you have a rare tropical disease. Spoiler! You don’t and will probably feel better in the morning after some sleep!
Don’t make a life plan!
Lying in bed and thinking about how you’ll change your entire life tomorrow seems productive but it’s just anxiety in a sparkly disguise. Save your grand plans for the morning when you can actually do something about them!
Don’t overthink falling asleep!
Telling yourself I have to sleep right now or the worst is going to happen is the quickest way to ensure you’ll be awake until sunrise. It’s like trying to force a sneeze. Just let it happen naturally or not. Either way, the sun’s coming up eventually.
Do you struggle to fall asleep or are you one of those lucky people who drop off as soon as your head hits the pillow?

Funny about Netflix and are you still watching... I don't fall asleep easily most nights. I have been like that my whole life so I am used to it by now but it's still frustrating. I hope you are well rested this morning and have a great day!
ReplyDeletehaha, this actually made me giggle. I'm most certainly not a night owl. I can't eat at night, I can't watch television without falling asleep, I can't scroll on my phone and even the television in my bedroom is just gathering dust since my ex left. BUT, these are all the things I'm saying to my kids constantly. Maybe I'm just too old, lol. xx
ReplyDeleteSuch great thoughts here today! I am bad about watching several episodes of a show... I need to stop doing that. I've had issues with not being able to fall asleep for the last few days, and I still wake up from 4-5 in the morning. I know this will pass...I hope it passes quickly!
ReplyDeleteOh these are fabulous! I have to remind myself that with Netflix and streaming services the way they are that I can always rewind/restart the show and not miss anything so it's okay to fall asleep mid-episode! That's why I try to re-watch old favorites at bedtime because I already know what's going to happen and don't have to stay awake.
ReplyDeletehaha! All of your tips are great. why do I do my best thinking, planning, worrying while trying to fall asleep?! Thanks for joining our link up!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post today. I try to stick to a routine and not go to bed late. It's sometimes hard to unwind after a busy day. I like listening to rain sounds or ocean waves to help me relax and fall asleep.
ReplyDeleteI am a just one more chapter girl. Then Brian will come in and find me asleep with my kindle still on.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this and poking a little fun at the things I do that aren't helpful to my sleep patterns. For me, it's using my phone (or playing solitaire on my Kindle instead of reading) that sabotage my falling asleep. Hope you slept well last night! I'm a couple days behind, but here from SOL
ReplyDeleteThis is so funny. Great advice though!
ReplyDeleteThese are all great tips! Thanks for stopping over. I couldn't respond directly to your comment via email because it came over as "no-reply blogger".
ReplyDeleteThese are great! Haha, I had a chuckle and enjoyed the good advice :)
