The Wednesday Hodgepodge #40

I hope you are all having a good week? It's Wednesday which means it's time to join in with the Wednesday Hodgepodge with Joyce who blogs at From This Side of the Pond! Each week there are 6 questions, we answer and then link up. Simple!

The Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. I live in the south so we're pretty much only talking about the weather right now. Give us a weather report from where you live. Does the kind of weather you're having today affect your mood in some way?

Right now, here in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, the weather is doing that very British thing where it can’t quite decide what it wants to be. I’m writing this on Sunday afternoon and we’re looking at a couple of grey, gloomy, damp days. The temperature is hovering around 5C (42F) which is cold enough to make you sigh when you step outside. Wednesday is apparently going to be sunny, dry and bright with temperatures reaching a thrilling 8C (47F). I know that doesn’t sound impressive but at this time of year I will take what I can get. The rest of the week is wet and grey! Ugh!

When it’s wet and grey out, I just feel a bit flat from the moment I look outside. My motivation disappears. I don’t want to start anything, I don’t want to finish anything and I definitely don’t want to be enthusiastic about laundry or housework but then when there is a bright day, like midweek, I will get a boost of motivation and I feel like I can take on the world which will hopefully see me through to the weekend when I don't mind it being grey and wet because weekends are meant for Pjs and cosy days at home.

2. Avocados, kale, cauliflower and cottage cheese have all had their time to shine. 2026 brings us the year of the cabbage. Is this a vegetable you like? If so, what are some of your favorite dishes that call for cabbage?

If you’d asked me this a year ago, I would have said absolutely not. I hated cabbage unless it was shredded into coleslaw. Then last year we were out for Sunday lunch at a pub and cabbage came with my roast dinner. Normally, I’d push it to the side of the plate and pretend it wasn’t there but for some reason I tried it and I loved it. It was green cabbage with bits of bacon and full of flavour, nothing like the cabbage I remembered from my childhood. The following week it was red cabbage and again I loved it too. I’ve tried making it at home since and it’s just not the same. I don’t know what pubs do with cabbage but whatever it is, my version is never quite the same.

3. Was a Cabbage Patch Doll a part of your childhood? Or maybe your children's childhood? What's a toy trend from your childhood you remember wanting for your own?

I remember being at primary school and someone brought a doll in to play Jesus in the school nativity and it was a Cabbage Patch Doll! I fell in love with it instantly. They were the ugliest looking things but all my friends seemed to have one but I never got one. Hmmf.

The toy I asked for every single Christmas and never got was Mr Frosty. If you grew up in the UK, you know, that little fella promised endless slush puppy drinks and endless joy. Looking back, my mum was probably imagining the mess and she was right. In a moment of madness I bought Ellie one about 10 years ago, the Frozen Olaf slush maker which was basically Mr Frosty in a different outfit. It was useless. It didn’t crush the ice, it didn’t make proper slush and it just made a mess! My mum was right!

4. Something you've spent a lot of time doing lately?

I’ve spent a lot of time decluttering lately and it’s one of those things that starts off small and suddenly takes over your life. I’ll go in to sort one cupboard and come out with three bags and a pile of "why do we even own this" items. I’m trying to take it slowly this time. I’ve learned that if I go too hard too fast I get fed up with it and want to avoid it altogether. So I’m doing bits here and there, stopping before I hit that wall and reminding myself that it doesn’t all need doing at once.

5. Somehow it's the last week of January...sum up your month in just three sentences.

January flew by instead of dragging, which feels like a small miracle. I started the month full of cold but now I feel better than I have in ages. It actually feels like I’ve got loads done, which is not the usual January I am used to.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Question number 2 has really got me thinking, mainly about how pubs and restaurants have some sort of secret power when it comes to food, especially vegetables. Things I would normally not eat at home taste amazing when I am out. Cabbage is a prime example. I am thinking when someone else has cooked it, served it to you and will handle all the washing up afterwards, it just tastes better. I feel the exact same way at home when Stu cooks. Even if he follows the exact same recipe I would, it somehow ends up tasting nicer and I find myself appreciating every bite. When I cook, I’m thinking about the mess, the timing, what still needs doing afterwards and whether I can be bothered to wash that pan straight away or leave it to soak. When he cooks, I just turn up and eat and there's no thinking involved. I think pubs do have a magic touch but I’m fairly sure the real ingredient to enjoying a meal fully is not having to be involved.

  1. I often have similar thoughts when cooking. I'm better if I can do dinner prep earlier in the day and not have to fuss too much at the actual dinner hour. I'm also the same with decluttering and have done a few things so far this year. I'm also taking it slow because once you empty out a cupboard or drawer you are there for the duration. Reorganizing my pantry was exhausting and took far longer than I thought it would. But now it's done and feels good. I'm with your mom on Mr. Frosty : ) Have a nice rest of the week!

  2. Your last sentence- so true!! Your temps don't seem too bad for January. I think you guys have more gray/gloomy days than we do here. The past two days have been freezing cold but oddly very sunny and the contrast is start between how it looks outside and how it is. How great to enjoy cabbage from the pub!

  3. I agree with the decluttering. It feels good but can be overwhelming quickly. I think part of the reason restaurant food tastes so much better is the salt and butter. I'm pretty sure they add more to everything than I would at home. Enjoy your sunny day!

  4. That is funny about how you fell in love with the cabbage patch doll!

  5. Or your last thought? How very true that is! That cabbage at the pub does sound delish. Your winter temps don't sound that bad- I would take them over the -7 that we have here today :)

  6. Yes food that's cooked for you always seems to taste better. Yes January has been a grey wet month but we have sunshine today. Hope you do too.

  7. Ha! Love your random thought. I love for food to just appear in front of me! Glad you have had a chance to change your opinion on cabbage. Well done on taking on decluttering in manageable segments. Glad this has been a good January for you. It would be fun to enjoy a Pub meal with you. Cheers!

  8. I agree about the decluttering. I have been doing the same this January. I got my seed bin done, so I could order my seeds for the 2026 garden season. I also got three dressers organized.
Here is to cabbage. Hee Hee! I love it.

  9. Same here Kim for your random thinking...I know it sounds crazy, but foods sure taste good when you do not have to think about cleaning up or even preparing them. The cabbage patch dolls had a way of making us love them. My daughters had a few (they still have them) and goodness...they carried them everywhere.

  10. Now if it was sunny those temps sound like they wouldn't be so bad but I hate gray, dreary days nearly as much as I dislike snowy ones. From having one in the restaurant industry I can tell you that the secret to their fabulous tasting vegetables is usually lots and lots of butter and oil (sometimes even lard or bacon grease) and seasonings-- far more than I would ever think to use at home!

  11. Bacon can liven up most vegetables. Your #4 made me chuckle, mine is a case of "Why are we still hanging on to this?", having carted something from one move to another and still not taken it out of the box.

  12. Your reply regarding Mr. Frosty reminded me that my sister gave my kids a Fuzzy Pumper set for Play Dough. You stuff Play Dough inside the hollow head of a doll that has holes all over the scalp. Then you push the dough through the holes, making "hair" grow. It was a very messy toy that I only allowed them to use at the kitchen table where we had a linoleum floor, not carpet. My sister had no children at the time, so she had no idea how awful that toy was for me.

  13. I do the same thing a lot of the times about decluttering. I will start and tell myself to take it slow and then I go CRAZY and then burn out. Unfortunately, because I know that is what happens I am having a hard time starting in general!!!!! LOL! I do need to be more active in February! I had all these good intentions in January, but I have just been so unmotivated when it comes to decluttering. I haven't felt myself all the way so maybe I just need to listen to my body and rest. I do feel a turn for the better coming so....I will hopefully get to going soon.

  14. Hi Kiam, I enjoyed reading your post. I agree with you about someone else making food. I am going through process of decluttering. It takes time and I have to be happy with the small steps I am taking!
    Thanks for visiting my blog!

  15. I enjoyed reading your post and getting to know you. Thank you for visiting my post today as well! I do understand what you mean about how restaurants can make things taste so good and different than what we can figure out at home, and they don't usually like to share their recipes! I guess they do that so we'll want to come back again! Decluttering is something I talk about doing, but never seem to get much done. I do a little bit here and there, mostly clothes. I try to donate clothes to our church Thrift Store every year when one season is over and I realize that some things just never get worn anymore, so why keep them? It's time to do that again. I also need to clean out the closet in our guest room, ad it has become a kind of catch-all room/closet. I can barely open the closet door and/or close it again, so it's time to do some drastic cleaning in there. Thank you for the reminder and inspiration. Hopefully I will act upon it soon. Have a blessed and wonderful rest of your week. Stay warm and cozy as you can.

  16. I am chuckling at your comment about eating out or someone else cooking. I agree. Food always tastes better when someone else cooks and takes care of the cleaning up. I do, though, love to cook for a crowd and cleaning up just requires me getting into the zone and getting it done. I do love cabbage. you should try cooking it with BUTTER and adding some peppers, onions, and smoked sausage or brats. Yum! I enjoyed your post! xo

  17. I'm definitely a fan of hibernating here during January and February. While I don't love the cold weather, I do love being cozy, and it's nice to get a reprieve from the awful heat that we have here in the south in the summer. That's awesome that January flew by for you and that you were able to get a lot done. Decluttering does always feel so fantastic! Stay warm over there!

  18. Hi, I came over from the Hodgepodge and got distracted by chocolate mug cake! I am another who was scarred by school cabbage. Our school dinners actually weren't bad but I remember the mashed potato (served with ice cream scoops) was always a bit lumpy (at least we know it was real potato) and I remember one time they gave us Savoy cabbage which was underdone and really salty. None of us knew what it was and people were saying it was seaweed. I think eventually the teachers stopped insisting on clean plates and let us go, but now I think about it, how amazing we had real food on real crockery, compared with what they serve up now on plastic compartmented plates. Cabbage cooked with bacon bits sounds great.

  19. I agree with your random thought. I love cooking, but when someone else cooks it's just automatically better. Same with coffee. I love my coffee at home but not from home coffee, infinitely more fun & better.

  20. I think that's funny they used a cabbage patch doll as the baby Jesus.
Right now I'm sitting outside, and its a little cold in the shade but sunny and about 63.Apparently we had our rain and now we're looking at clear sunny days. That slaw with the bacon sounds good!

  21. I have the same motivation problem when it's gloomy and grey outside. But I do prefer my weekends to have nice weather because that's when I can get out and do something fun if it's sunny!
Almost any meal that I don't have to clean up after is a good meal (but not cabbage! haha) but I do think you're right that pub and restaurant versions of food often have a little something extra or different that I can't recreate. But maybe it is just that someone else made it and will clean it up.
Hope you're having a great week!
