This week my Word of the Week is: Applying! #WotW

This week my Word of the Week is:

Applying

Stu didn't get the job he applied for and had an interview for earlier this week, there was 30 other people being interviewed and only 2 jobs so the odds were against him. Oh well, just getting the interview has given him the motivation to apply for more jobs and our week has been filled with me going through all the job advertisement websites and picking out suitable jobs. That is a full time job in it's self. lol and when Stu has got home from work he has been applying and filling in the application forms.

I always laugh that people applying for jobs get creative writing their CV but looking through lists of jobs companies are very creative with the job titles as well. A Customer Experience Agent is just customer support, a Traffic Management Operative is someone who puts temporary traffic lights up, a Maintenance Cleaning Assistant and Hygiene Operatives are cleaners, a Relationships Engagement Partner, Lifestyle Assistant or an Activities Coordinator is a care assistant and an Appointment Setter and Closer is a cold caller. lol

I found a job for Stu that I wanted him to apply for and get just so he could have some awkward conversations when people ask where do you work. It was a job at a toy factory, an adult toy factory. Use your imagination and you are probably right. They even offered staff discount and said they wouldn't judge. lol It's immature to laugh about but I guess someone has to make those type of "toys". In case you were wondering it was too far to travel so he didn't apply. Hmmf.

Applying for a job now isn't just sending a CV and cover letter, there are follow up questions, online accounts to make on the companies websites and more questions to answer. How would you handle a situation where you were overwhelmed with tasks? What does good customer service mean to you? Where do you see yourself in five years? What interests you about this role? The strangest question I've seen is what did your parents do for work when you were 14 years old? Does it matter?

Stu hasn't been the only one applying for jobs and filling out application forms. Ellie has too but her filling out the forms has been much more amusing. I will have a whole blog post to write about her job hunting, it has been challenging from my point of view, helping her create a CV and explaining to her that the companies are not being sexist when they ask if she is a Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, or Reverend but come to think of it why does it matter. lol We have got creative with her employment history and skills. She has an interview soon for a volunteering job which at the moment is better than nothing. She's doing something good and will have something extra to put on her CV.

How has your week been? I hope you have had a good one! I am of course linking up with Anne who blogs at Raisie Bay for her Word of the Week linky!

  1. I'm sorry Stu didn't get the job, I'm sure something much better is just around the corner for him.
It sounds like an absolute minefield applying for a job, some of those questions are just crazy.
Good luck to Ellie in her job search too x

  2. I am so glad that I am done applying and interviewing for jobs now! I retired from my full time job eight years ago, but when my Joe passed away from COVID, I had to go back to work, part time. It was fairly easy to find a job and I was blessed with the one I got and had for three years. Stu will find the perfect fit, I'm sure! Do please keep us posted. My fingers are crossed for him (and you!)!

  3. Oh how funny to read the fancy names they now give these jobs! I hope Stu and Ellie are sorted soon and settled into doing something they truly enjoy. I love your role in the whole process BTW, lol. Nice to catch up again. Cheers!

  4. Dang, I'm sorry Stu didn't get the job. Job hunting these days is truly insane. There are so many requirements just to even be considered for an interview. And yes, the job titles these days are quite amusing, I completely agree! Good luck to Stu and Ellie!

  5. Very creative names. Sorry Stu didn't get the job, but it's a good sign that he got an interview. Hopefully the right job will come up soon. My youngest is applying for jobs too. Hope Ellie finds a good place soon. I think you've found your calling though. You sound so organized wading through the job titles and finding possible jobs.

  6. Gosh, job hunting is not fun. I remember when my daughter did it at the beginning of the year. It can get a little soul destroying. Good luck to both Stu and your daughter.

  7. Your job descriptions did make me giggle. I'm sorry Stu didn't get the job he applied for but it's good he has the motivation to keep going. I remember when I was young getting a job was so easy. I walked into a shop once and said have you got any jobs going and they said 'can you start tomorrow' I replied yes, and job was sealed. I didn't stay there long, but it kept me going until something better came along. When, I was interviewed for the job at the university I walked away knowing I hadn't done very well, so I wasn't surprised when I got the call saying no. Then a week later they asked me if I was still interested and I was in! (The original choice decided it wasn't really for her!) It's a minefield and gets harder all the time. Good luck to Stu and Ellie x

  9. Good luck to Ellie and Stu with their job hunting. lol at the 'adult' toy factory and discount offered. It is a full time job applying for a job and don't get me started on how every employer wants your CV in a different format. #wotw

  10. I'm sorry that he didn't get the job, and hope that the applications go well. It sounds much more complicated than it was when I last applied for a job, also I do worry about AI being used to filter out applications, which I see from the other side when my husband is involved in recruiting people in his job and promising candidates are rejected. Best of luck to the two of them!

  11. Sorry to hear Stu didn't get the job but well done on getting an interview and fingers crossed the right job comes up soon. As someone working in HR, it does make me chuckle how creative you need to be sometimes with job titles to try to make them sound more attractive! Recruitment can be such a minefield with all the processes you have to go through. I’m with you in thinking it was much easier in the days of just sending in a CV and cover letter! Good luck to both Stu and Ellie with their various job applications. #WotW
