This week my Word of the Week is:
If you had told me this time last year or even this time last month I would be obsessing over books, I would have laughed in your face. Me and books haven't been a thing, not since I was a teenager. Life is busy and I could never sit still long enough to turn pages and get fully sucked into a book. For years I just gave up on the dream of being a reader but then Audiobooks happened!!
I don’t even remember what made me try one properly this year but once I did, that was it! Audiobooks are a total game changer. I don’t have to sit still, I don’t have to stare at words and give them my full attention, I can just listen and somehow that works with my brain in a way reading never did. I can be doing something else and still get completely pulled into a story.
The first time I properly got into an audiobook was when I was sorting out my wardrobe. I had my headphones in and while folding my clothes I had a story unfolding into my ears. It didn’t feel like I was doing a boring job that I had been putting off for ages. I started listening while cooking tea, while walking, while folding laundry and even while sitting at my laptop blogging. Instead of rushing through jobs I don’t enjoy, I am now looking forward to them because it means I can carry on with whatever book I'm listening to.
I’d been using Spotify for audiobooks because we already pay for Spotify Premium and I thought audiobooks were just part of the deal. I got through a few books fairly quickly and was feeling very pleased with myself. Then Wednesday happened! I was in the kitchen cooking tea, headphones in, happily listening to The Woman Who Got Her Spark Back by Fiona Gibson when the story suddenly stopped and I heard a voice say something about "You have reached your listening limit." I had no idea there was a limit but Spotify only gives you 15 hours of audiobooks a month and it resets when your bill is paid. Our bill goes out mid-month, which means I’ve probably listened to about 30 hours already in January without realising.
I wasn’t ready to give this up. I was enjoying listening to books far too much, so I did what I always do when something annoys me. I went straight to Google. There were lots of options for audiobook apps, most offering a free trial and then charging around eight or nine pounds a month. Which isn’t terrible but I really didn’t want to add another subscription to my life. So I started searching for free audiobooks and I found quite a few but not really the sort of books I wanted to listen to and then I came across BorrowBox.
BorrowBox is a free app that lets you borrow audiobooks and ebooks from your local library and download them straight to your phone or tablet with no payment, no subscription and no hidden limits. How did I not know about this before? I do wonder how many other people are missing out on this too?
The only thing that nearly stopped me was the thought of joining the library. The last time I even thought about it, you had to take ID and proof of address before they would issue a library card but I checked the website on the off chance and it turns out joining is now simple. I didn’t need to prove anything. I just filled in my name, email address, home address, chose my local library and that was it. So I went back to the BorrowBox app, signed in with my new library card details and suddenly I had access to so many books, way more choice than Spotify, too! New releases, familiar authors, books I’ve heard people talk about for years and never got round to reading.
The borrowing system works just like a proper library. You borrow a book for a set amount of time, which is around 20 days and when that time’s up it automatically returns itself. Some books weren’t available straight away, which confused me at first because it’s an audio file, but then I realised libraries work on licences, so only a certain number of people can borrow each book at a time. You can reserve them though.
I now have a list of about 15 books. I haven't reserved any apart from the one I'm listening too but they’re all new to me, which makes it feel exciting. So sorry Spotify Audiobooks, you’ve been dumped. Well almost. I’ll be back once my hours reset so I can finish the last hour of my current book and then we're through.
I never thought I’d say this, but I’m a reader now. Not in the way I imagined, I’m a reader while being busy and instead of reading the books with my eyes, it's with my ears!
How has your week been? I hope you have had a good one! I am of course linking up with Anne who blogs at Raisie Bay to join in with her Word of the Week linky!

I've never got into audiobooks I prefer an actual book or my e reader but if it works for you that's brilliant. I like the idea of being able to link up with your local library. I joined ours ages ago but to my shame I've never been in. Karen Early Rising Mum
ReplyDeleteI love reading and I love my library but.....I can't get on with audio books. I find I can't keep track if I'm trying to do something else at the same time and if I just sit down to listen to the book I often end up falling asleep, no matter how engaging the book is lol. I do like being able to get ebooks through the library app though. Good for you for persevering. I hope you can finish the book you'd started on Spotify and don't have to listen to the whole thing again.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried audiobooks because I lose interest in podcasts after about five minutes. The voice(s) just drone on and on and my mind shifts gears and moves on to something else. I must have a short attention span for things like that. Maybe I'll find a free one and give it a try to see how it goes. Keep us posted on how you are doing with it!! Have a great weekend, Kim!!
ReplyDeleteI can borrow audiobooks from the library, too. I have an Audible subscription, so I get 1 free book a month and I usually pick ones in my favorite genre, historical fiction, as I sometimes listed to them more than once.
ReplyDeleteHubby and I both check 2-3 books out of our public library once or twice a month. Sometimes we read what the other one has checked out because of the interesting things we've shared with each other. I'm not one for listening to books unless it's on a long road trip.
ReplyDeleteYAY!!!! Awesome!! I am so proud of you. That is great to find a way to read that you love and works for you!!!! My daughter has dyslexia, so reading doesn't come easy to her and audiobooks have been such a blessing to her. I think everyone processes things differently!!! I love that you have found your reading niche!!!
ReplyDeleteAudiobooks are fantastic! I usually have a couple on the go at a time. I stick my headphones on while cleaning and listen. BorrowBox is great, there's always something new to listen to. I'm so glad you have rediscovered your love for books.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could cope with audiobooks, I like to just concentrate on the book, and I can probably read quite fast, so I'd get annoyed with the speed of the reader. But they're great for people who want to absorb the books while doing other things like running etc. I'm amazing you can blog at the same time though - I wouldn't be able to hear words at the same time as writing. Too much distraction. The world of books is your oyster now! The library borrowing is so good now with the audio/ebooks. I think if you have Prime, you can get a couple of free ones a month too (like Prime Reading you get 1-2 books a month free too)
ReplyDeletejumping in Emma, you can speed up the reader, I've done this when I just wanted to finish the book because I just can't to leave a book unfinished. I find I need to listen to a preview first though as some narrators just annoy the heck out of me.
DeleteI'm amazed that you can listen to audiobooks while blogging, I can't listen to them while doing anything as I lose track of where I'm at with them! BorrowBox sounds like a great idea, thank you for sharing, I'm going to investigate for e-books!
ReplyDeleteI love audio books, it started when I had to spend a lot of time in hospital and as you can imagine, ear pods were a lot easier to carry around than a book. Then I discovered that I didn't have to book down while I carried on with my crochet, then I discovered that I could continue listening while I cooked dinner. The only drawback I had was when I was once so intrigued I decided to listen in bed for and hour..I fell asleep, got through 8 chapters and woke up to find out that Mark had died...how did that happen, oh no! I can't even remember what book it was but I don't listen at bedtime anymore, lol. There are many book apps, but the library is so good for free.
ReplyDeleteI joined the "normal" library and got access to BorrowBox with that. I tried a few audiobooks and they are not for me. I prefer paper books.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your listening. Do make sure you mention the best reads on your blog.
Our library has books for free through the Libby app and that's how I listen to all my audiobooks. I am all about free library resources!
ReplyDeleteI’ve tried audiobooks but prefer reading books myself rather than listening to them. I’m glad that audiobooks are working so well for you though and you're able to enjoy books while multitasking. I’ve heard of BorrowBox but haven’t really used it – it sounds great though. #WotW
ReplyDeleteI can't do audio books, I drift off focusing on other things. I do listen to pod casts and documentaries when I'm running. I tried an audio book but I had to pay too much attention to it. #wotw
ReplyDeleteI love that you're loving audiobooks! I wish I could listen to them. Most of the time when I try to listen to things, my mind starts wandering and I realize way later that I've missed half of what I was supposed to be listening to. Haha. That means I have to take the time to sit down and actually read for myself!
