The crazy things in the run up to Christmas!

The run up to Christmas is it's own kind of bonkers. Sure, it’s all twinkling lights and mulled wine on the surface but scratch a little deeper, and you’ll find a treasure trove craziness which makes me giggle when I think about it. All logic seems to fly out of the window and we all collectively lose our minds in the pursuit of festive perfection.

Santa looking stressed

The food shopping frenzy!
You’d think we’re preparing for a month long snowstorm not one Christmas dinner. There’s always that one person with a trolley so stuffed that it looks like they’re feeding the five thousand and the panic is real. Have we got enough cheese, just one more block is needed when it really isn't. Heaven forbid you’re the one to grab the last box of stuffing mix, it could cause a riot!

The Christmas Card Conundrum!
First there’s the annual debate: to send or not to send? If you’re the sender you probably spent a solid hour debating whether to include a heartfelt note or just go with a generic "Merry Christmas, love from us." Is this a "Best wishes" kind of friend or a "Love always" type? And let’s not even mention the existential crisis of running out of stamps (have you seen the price of them now) and deciding if distant Aunt Margaret really needs a card this year.

The “Who Ate the Chocolates?” Game!
Advent calendars are a lovely tradition until someone gets sneaky. One minute you’re opening December 15th to a chocolate Santa and the next you’re staring at an empty square because someone (one of my girls probably) have raided ahead and ate one of my treats. Hmmf! So the petty side of me pinches one of there chocolates too. hehehe

The Christmas Jumpers!
It’s that time of year when people, grown adults proudly strut about in jumpers that look like they’ve lost a bet. Glitter, pompoms and LED lights aren’t just encouraged they’re mandatory. My fella has a Star Wars one which he is so proud of but it's hideous. Becky has a Deadpool one which she loves but it's not my favourite thing that she wears at Christmas.

The Wrapping Paper Olympics!
Wrapping gifts is supposed to be fun, right? Wrong! First, there’s the existential crisis of trying to match paper to the recipient. Would dad appreciate glittery snowflakes or neutral stripes? I always lose the scissors run out of tape and by the end at least one present looks like it’s been mangled by an overly enthusiastic toddler!

The "Just a Few More Presents" Problem!
Does anyone actually finish their Christmas shopping early? If you do, you’re a rare and mystical creature. I finished last week but I still seem to be buying presents. I convince myself that one more scented candle will complete someone's gift. Just a little box of chocolates will be nice for someone else's present pile. It's never ending! I need some self discipline. lol

The Weather Optimism!
Why do we Brits always think it’s going to snow at Christmas? Every year someone says, “It’s looking likely this time!” as if they have a hotline to the Met Office. In reality, we’re more likely to get torrential rain and gale force winds than a Winter Wonderland. But does that stop us? Nope. We carry on dreaming!

My favourite Christmas food and drinks!

When it comes to Christmas food in the UK, the season isn’t just about traditional roast turkey dinners and puddings it’s also about those little indulgences that capture the joy and warmth of the festive season!

sweet christmas treats

Festive Sandwiches!
Supermarkets and cafes like Tesco, Asda & M&S bring out limited edition festive sandwiches at this time of year and I love it! Think turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce, brie and cranberry, or even vegan nut roast wraps. These sandwiches offer a taste of Christmas in every bite and are perfect for on the go lunches during the holiday rush.

Pigs in Blankets!
No Christmas dinner is complete without pigs in blankets. These bite sized sausages wrapped in crispy bacon are a favourite side dish. We love them so much that I always cook them before and after Christmas day to enjoy as a snack!

Pigs in Blankets

Baileys Hot Chocolate!
When the cold winter nights draw in there’s nothing more comforting than a steaming mug of Baileys Hot Chocolate. This indulgent drink combines creamy Baileys Irish Cream with velvety hot chocolate, topped with whipped cream and of course marshmallows!

Greggs Festive Bake!
If there’s one thing Brits eagerly look forward to as Christmas approaches, it’s the return of the Greggs Festive Bake! This pastry has achieved cult status and it’s easy to see why. Encased in a buttery, flaky pastry shell lies a magical filling of succulent chicken, sage and onion stuffing, sweet cured bacon and a creamy sage and cranberry sauce. I always have a few in the run up to Christmas and they are one of my favourite savoury treats!

Festive Bake and Bucks fizz

Bucks Fizz!
Nothing says festive indulgence quite like a glass of Bucks Fizz. Made with two parts sparkling wine and one part orange juice has become a breakfast staple on Christmas morning. The origins of Bucks Fizz date back to 1921 when it was first created at London’s Buck’s Club.

Gingerbread houses!
We make a gingerbread house or two every December! They are fun to put together and then of course eat! Ours are not just for decoration!

Christmas Cake
Fruitcake might not be everyone’s favourite but a traditional Christmas cake often soaked in brandy and topped with marzipan and icing is a true festive showstopper.

A Cheese Board!
A Christmas cheese board is a highlight of the festive season. Featuring a selection of British favourites like Stilton, mature Cheddar, and Wensleydale with cranberries, it’s served with crackers, chutney, and maybe even a slice of Christmas cake for a sweet and savoury pairing.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange!
This zesty, chocolatey sphere may technically be available year round, but it feels tied to Christmas. Whether it’s unwrapping one in your stocking or sharing slices with family, Terry’s Chocolate Orange is a festive favourite I look forward to all year!

Terry’s Chocolate Orange and mince pies

Mince Pies!
No list of Christmas foods would be complete without the beloved mince pie. These buttery pastries, filled with a spiced mixture of dried fruits brandy, and sugar are a festive staple. Whether store bought or homemade they go so well with a Baileys hot chocolate!

Our weekly meal plan! 16th - 22nd December. #MealPlanningMonday

Our weekly meal plan

Last weeks meal plan went well, in the sense that we ate just about everything but mostly not on the day that I had planned. The Gousto meals were good and my favourite was the pork & sage stuffing pizza. Who'd have thought that stuffing flavours and cranberry sauce would work on a pizza. We got a cheeky takeaway over the weekend and it was nice.

This week I'm not getting a Gousto box or really doing any food shopping as we have the big Christmas food shop coming this time next week. I actually went online during the week and added everything that I needed to the online shop, I've already been back on three times and changed and added things. I've decided I'm not even going to bother ordering parsnips as they never get delivered for Christmas, I'm just going to go to the farm shop.

I don't have much planned for this week apart from delivering presents and cards to family and get those last little things done that need doing in the run up to Christmas. I have a ton of lists reminding me of things that I need to do like take the meat out of the freezer a day early as we are having our Christmas dinner on Christmas eve so Becky can enjoy it as she's working right over Christmas. I already feel muddled up with what day it is and we're still just over a week away from Christmas. Heaven help me next week. lol

On the menu this week we have:

Monday - Chinese pork ribs and egg fried rice.
Tuesday - Fish fingers chips and baked beans.
Wednesday - Sausage pasta and garlic bread.
Thursday - Pies, mashed potato and veg.
Friday - Pizza.
Saturday - A fry up with sausage, bacon, eggs, black pudding, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast.
Sunday - Prawn cocktail salad with some nice brown bread.

What are you eating this week?

Week 50 of #Project365 8th - 14th December! A photo every day for a year!

I have loved this past week even though I felt like I have been so busy with one thing and another. We started the week with fixing the damage that Storm Darragh created and ended it with a couple of deliveries of Christmas presents from friends.

Christmas feels like it's coming around so quickly. This time next week and it will almost be here! I still have a few bits to do but I feel on top of everything now, well mostly!

Now for a photo every day!

Damaged fence
Sky and Christmas table
TV guide and Hello Kitty figures
Big Babybel and chocolate

343/365 - 8th December
This was the damaged to our fences caused by the storm. Ugh. One panel down, 2 damaged and then another couple down. We left everything where it was on Sunday as it was still so windy and wet out.

344/365 - 9th December
My brother came with his super power tools to help fix the fence. We wouldn't have managed without him. The weather still wasn't great but the sun was trying to get out between the showers.

345/365 - 10th December
Anther Christmas meal out, this one was the best one! The food was amazing and we were sat right by the fire which was a real bonus on a cold day.

346/365 - 11th December
I got me a TV guide for over Christmas. Yes I have one on my TV but it's not the same. It's the only time I buy a paper one and spotted quite a few things which I most likely would have missed. It has been decided (by me) that we're watching BBC1 all of Christmas day. It has all the best TV shows on including Gavin & Stacey which I can't wait for.

347/365 - 12th December
Ellie has a Hello Kitty Advent calendar and these are the figures she has got so far. She loves little things like this and will end up finding space for them all in her bedroom.

348/365 - 13th December
A giant Babybel! They are not a myth, I totally thought they weren't real until I saw them in Asda. I think they were £3 each. My girls used to love them years ago. I remember at one point I stopped buying the little one's as they were eating far too many in one sitting. lol They soon learned to control their portions.

349/365 - 14th December
Chocolate!! Yum!! The lovely Jayne sent me a box of Cadbury goodness for Christmas. Ellie was there when I opened the box and it made her day to see the Santa's Sleigh kit as I have always said no to buying one as they're too expensive. hehehe She also said I can't eat any until Christmas as that's what I've been telling my family about everything that I have bought. She's got me on that one.
