Keeping warm....

The last few weeks I have been trying not to put the heating on during the day when I'm in the house by myself....Trying not to worry about The Winter Fuel Bills....

Here are a few ideas on how to keep warm without putting the heating on.....

Cosy up with throws and blankets when you are watching the television or relaxing with the children....Find them cheaply in charity shops....If you grab a hot drink you can also warm up your hands too....

Add layers...Layers of thin clothing topped off with a cosy fleece or jumper keep you really warm....Start with vests and thin tops and tights/leggings and then add on the layers...

A hot water bottle is a cheap and really effective way of keeping warm. You can pop one in beds before everyone tucks up for the night, curl up with them on the sofa or even use them to warm up clothes in the morning whilst you grab a shower so you can then dress in warm clothes.

Draw the curtains....Keep doors and curtains closed in the evenings....You can even hang curtains over doors to add an extra layer of insulation...

Plug the gaps....On a windy day go round the house and check for draughts. If you hold a lit candle you can see the draughty places when the flame flickers. You can also buy draught proofing strips to stick around the window frame and close any gaps. If you want to go further then you can cover keyholes and fit letterbox flaps and think about filling  gaps in flooring and skirting boards with fillers that you can squirt into any gaps.

Reflect the heat back. Tin foil placed down the backs of radiators will help the heat bounce back into the room.

Jump around. Exercise not only warms you up but will keep the whole family fit and healthy and help you fight off any winter bugs too...

Toastie toes. We lose heat most from our heads, finger and toes....Make sure you and your family have cosy slippers to keep your feet toastie. Even two pairs of socks makes a difference....

Warm your tummies. Soups. stews and casseroles are brilliant meals for when it is cold. They are not only healthy but will warm you up too. Eating well will help you fight off winter bugs and needn't cost the earth...

Head for bed. Sounds a bit drastic but often bed is the cosiest place to be when it is really cold.  Head to bed early with a hot water bottle, some warm pyjamas, thick socks and enjoy reading...If you start going to bed earlier you will also feel more rested and be full of energy to face the next day...
