The Wednesday Hodgepodge #41

I hope you are all having a good week. It's Wednesday, which means it's time to join in with the Wednesday Hodgepodge with Joyce who blogs at From This Side of the Pond! Each week there are 6 questions, we answer and then link up. Simple!

The Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. The Winter Olympics kick off on Friday, February 6th...on a scale of 1-10 how excited are you? (1= eh and 10=watching every event all day every day). What's your favorite Winter Olympic sporting event?

I’d say I’m about a 5. I’ll watch it if it’s on but I’m not going to plan my day around it. My favourite to watch has to be figure skating, there’s something about the grace and drama that just pulls me in. I also like keeping an eye on the Jamaican bobsleigh team if only for a little Cool Runnings nostalgia. Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it’s bobsled time!

2. In other sporting news, the Superbowl (American football's championship game) will be played on Sunday, February 8th. So tell us...what's your superpower?

As a mum of two adult daughters, my superpower is knowing things without being told. I can hear a sigh through a closed door and instantly know someone’s had a bad day, whether someone’s hungry, or someone’s about to ask me for a favour but is warming up first. I can also sense drama before it’s even formed into words.

3. Are you a romantic?

I think I am but not in a big, dramatic way. I like romance but my fella and I aren’t that couple. We’re settled, we plod on and there’s no grand gestures but then every now and again, he’ll come home with flowers or chocolates, just because. I will do little things like make his favourite food, buy him his favourite snacks and not complain when he is watching football, even though I need his help with something. So I suppose I am a romantic, the kind that appreciates the small surprises and the thought behind them.

4. Blue cheese-yay or nay? How about feta? If you said yes to one or both, what's a dish you like that calls for one of these?

No to both! I’ve tried but the smell of blue cheese alone is enough to make me run for the hills and I know people love Feta but that tangy, crumbly stuff just isn’t for me. I am not a big cheese lover. I am sure I have mentioned it before, all cheese used to give me migraines but over the last 10 years I have realised I can eat mozzarella and cream and cottage cheese without any side effects so I don't push my luck with the rest.

5. What's more important-doing what you love or loving what you do?

I’d say loving what you do is more important. It’s about enjoying what you’re doing, no matter what it is. It’s not about chasing some big dream all the time, more about making the best of what’s in front of you. Enjoying the little bits, the small wins, the stuff you can control even if it’s not exactly your ultimate passion. That’s what makes it work.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We’re a few days into February and every year I forget just how much I like this month until it sneaks up on me. There’s Valentine’s Day with all the chocolate and little surprises even though I’m not exactly a hopeless romantic and then Pancake Day which is an excuse to eat syrupy, pancake goodness without feeling guilty. The days are starting to get longer too and suddenly winter doesn’t feel like it’s going to hang around forever. There are little hints of spring, maybe warmer days are on the way and life might not be all hats, scarves and gloomy skies for much longer.

  1. I like watching figure skating too, and I’ll probably watch the ceremonies. To be honest, I keep forgetting that the Winter Olympics are on so soon! Thanks for the Pancake Day reminder. I don’t want to forget it this year.

  2. I agree with you about February. It's a small little month that packs a big punch :). I'm glad you've found a couple of cheese types that you can eat. I feel the same way you do about being a romantic. We don't do the big gestures- it's more the small things. Have a great day!

  3. I like some of the Winter Olympics, the skating and the ski jumping are my favourites. My superpower is staying alive when my body is saying no! I am not romantic. I was once but it was killed by useless men. I love all kinds of cheese including blue and feta, but I'm not so keen on goat's cheese. I love pancakes but I hate making them. I leave it to the kids now.

  4. Yes, to February reminding us that winter won’t last forever! We’re still definitely in winter here in Saskatchewan, Canada but there’s more light and a feeling of “I think I can” as we chug closer to spring.

  5. I definitely agree most moms have a superpower in their ability to feel things without their kids actually articulating their trouble, drama, sorrow. I think the small gestures definitely qualify, perhaps more than the grand. They're unexpected and brighten a day for that very reason. I'm thinking I need to add pancake day to my calendar. My hubs loves them. Have a nice week!

  6. Love your superpower. So very true for us moms right? Especially with daughters- it will always be our intuition and best to follow our gut. I love the figure skating too!

  8. Most of those in our immediate family call those cheeses, stinky cheese. Ha. Being a mom is a super power! :) Hooray for chocolate and pancake day. I'm happy to adopt pancake day from the UK! I enjoyed your answers, Kim! Happy February and Wednesday Hodgepodge to you.

  10. Hello friend. I literally died out laughing about your comment about feta! LOL! I do love it, though. I agree on Blue Cheese..gag! I am not a romantic. I try to be but I am not. I mean maybe a tad....yeah...nope. LOL! As far as the Olympics, I am in complete oblivion. Don't watch it now as an adult. As far as a superpower...I just know things... like you mentioned! Have a great day!!!!!

  11. I need to try making some proper British pancakes for Pancake Day. This year, it falls on the same day as the Lunar New Year so we could have pancakes breakfast and Asian for dinner and have an international day!

  12. I don't like the cheeses either and although I'm happy with Mozzarella and cream cheese I wouldn't thank you for cottage cheese either. I had to check out when pancake day is as I was thinking March but yep it's in February this year and Easter is fairly early. Not that we're big on pancakes here lol

  13. Hi Kim...your random thought is spot on for a great February and all of the special events. Like you, it's the very smell of blue cheese that turns my stomach upside down. lol... I enjoyed your answer to #5. This very question made me think about how many young people go to school for a certain degree and within a few years they realize this is not their happy place. It's important though to love what you do and do what you love. Have a wonderful day.

  14. I enjoy the figure skating too! I used to enjoy cheese far more than I do now; I hardly ever eat it anymore. I don't get headaches but will break out with eczema and just feel icky after eating it.

  16. I love that movie, Cool Runnings!! Need to dig it out and watch it again! I have the DVD! I enjoyed my visit here today, Kim! You sound like a great mom with all those instincts!! I'm sure your girls appreciate you more than you know! I'm not a romantic and Joe wasn't either, but there were always those special moments and special gifts. I miss my guy! Have a great weekend!! xo

  17. Pancake Day?? Not sure what that is but it sounds wonderful. Even more than all the chocolate of Valentine's Day!

  18. Figure skating is my favorite winter Olympic sport to watch, too. Other than that, I don't watch much of it either. I do love Cool Runnings, though! We were just talking about that movie today... our kids have never seen it, so I think it's about time to show them!
