This week my Word of the Week is:
It has to be! I’ve grumbled about it all year but now I’m properly over it and need to have a full-on moan. It has been relentless. January 2026 was officially the wettest on record here in the UK and it seems like the rain just refuses to take a break. I read somewhere that some places have had rain every single day this year! I can’t remember the last time there was a day that didn’t involve some sort of drizzle or downpour and sunshine now feels like a long, lost memory!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind the rain sometimes. I love it in the evenings, especially when I don’t have to go outside. There’s something about the sound of rain tapping against the window that makes me want to grab a blanket, a mug of hot chocolate and light a candle. It feels peaceful but when it has been raining as much as it has, it stops being fun! Right now, the rain is ruining my days. I can’t get out into the garden to give it a tidy, I don’t feel like going for walks and my mood is about as damp as the weather itself.
When I do make the effort and pop out it's no fun! I’ll step out and it seems OK, just a fine drizzle and then five minutes later, it chucks it down so hard I’m soaked through to my bones by the time I reach the end of the street. On the plus side, it’s an excellent excuse to come home, throw on my PJs and settle in with a hot chocolate because something good has to come of this stupid weather!
It’s never the same kind of rain though. There’s the fine, misty rain, which doesn’t seem like much but somehow gets you drenched before you’ve even got to the end of the path. There’s the spitting rain which arrives just when you think the sun might make an appearance. Then there is the torrential rain which makes me go running around the house making sure the girls have shut their bedroom windows and somewhere in between all of that, there’s the grey drizzle that just goes on and on draining my energy.
Poor Stu always seems to get the worst of the rain, it always seems to come down heavier early in the morning and he gets soaked on his way to work. He’s a trooper, bless him and has a good coat with a big hood but that doesn’t stop him coming home in a coat that hasn’t dried and is cold and damp. I can’t help feeling sorry for him, though I do secretly enjoy teasing him for coming in soggy but don't you feel sorry for him, he pays me back by trying to give me a cuddle while he still has the cold, wet coat on.
It’s strange how rain can be both relaxing and exhausting at the same time. I find myself wanting it when I want a quiet moment and dreading it when I have things to do. It's making me lazy, I’ve noticed that on rainy days, all I want to do is curl up under a blanket and watch something mindless on TV and when the sun peeks out, even a little, it’s like a little boost pushing me to get moving, tidy up or go for a short walk but with this much rain lately, those little bursts of energy are few and far between.
How has your week been? I hope you have had a good one! I am of course linking up with Anne who blogs at Raisie Bay to join in with her Word of the Week linky!

Rain? Really? lol. Yes it has been relentless although I've woken up to sunshine today and clear blue sky but....there's always a but when we talk about weather - it's cold! lol Hope you get some sun today. I agree it definitely dampens the mood as well as the ground.
ReplyDeleteEeks! The rainiest month on record? Oh wow, you must have gotten a ton of it. I could see how that would get real old real fast! My week has been good. I worked three days which is a lot for me but they were good days at school :). Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
ReplyDeleteWe are in a severe drought here in Central Florida of the USA. Now I know where our rain has gone -- to your neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same about the silly rain. Mind you, I keep reminding myself that there are bulbs and seeds waiting on the rain and rejoicing when it happens. I hate being out in the rain too. My worse raining day is the one where its not raining heavily but it just seems like there is a grey mist covering everywhere! Ugh! Anyway, wishing a good week ahead for you all.
ReplyDeleteOh no, Kim, sorry to hear about all the rain! I totally sympathise because rainy days really get me down. It’s even worse at preschool when we’re stuck inside with over 30 kids. We’re only heading into week 4 of term 1, but luckily so far this year, the kids have been much nicer than last year, and we haven’t had any rainy days yet.
ReplyDeleteAs I write my reply it's been pouring down all morning. I'm glad I don't have to go out but I am hoping it stops in time for my shopping delivery this afternoon. I don't have to go out much and when I do I make sure I'm dropped off the nearest to shelter as possible. I can't really get my wheelchair wet. I have covers but it makes me feel so weird being all covered up like a baby in a pram! How kind of Stu to give you a soaking wet hug, lol. I remember that light rain that you can barely see but it leaves you soaked through. We used to say it was sogging outside.
ReplyDeleteIt's certainly been the wetest start to the year that I can remember. I don't really mind the rain but the grey skies definitely have an effect on my energy and mood.
ReplyDeletePoor Stu in his damp coat, my kids have been the same when they come home from school so it's been radiators on and getting changed straight away.
I hope we get some more blue skies as the month goes on.
Rain. I sure wish you could send some to us. We need rain badly. It always seems like that. Someone has more than they need and others have none. Cute that Stu tries to give you a hug while he is soggy wet! LOL Good for him. Sorry I'm late again!
ReplyDeleteThe weather has been awful. Dull, grey and entirely too much rain. I'm as much for snuggling up and listening to the rain as the next person but I could really do with some sunshine! Karen - Early Rising Mum
ReplyDeleteWe've certainly had a lot of rain. The garden is squishy underfoot, which puts me off going out when we do have a break. Ah well. Won't be long until the washing is out on the line and the greenhouses are bulging at the seams again. At least that's what I'm telling myself.
ReplyDeleteWe are on the opposite side of the world and were SO excited when we had some rain over the weekend. It had been so hot and dry, it was such a relief but I do get that too much gets a lot.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I can't imagine having rain that often. That doesn't sound like fun at all. I love a good, cozy, rainy day, but it would get old after a few days. Sending lots of sunshine vibes your way!!
ReplyDeleteThe rain has felt never-ending so far this year, hasn’t it? And yes, it is good to have some rain but not every single day! Frustrating when you always seem to get the worst of it on the way to work (or the school run for me!). Definitely the right weather for curling up indoors under a blanket and it’s nice to get a little boost of energy when the sun does come out. Hopefully with spring on the way, the rain will start to ease off soon! #WotW
ReplyDeleteI don't min the rain as it's usually warmer when it's raining, especially when I go to the football. I've got a dry robe so I never get wet or cold really. it's the icy winds I can't stand and the flooding that comes with the rain. #wotw
