A new survey has revealed that the average Brit buys 12 take away's each month and spend a staggering £110 a month on buying them which adds up to £1320 a year.
Personally I think that is crazy! We have a takeaway about twice a month which in total costs around £50! I certainly couldn't afford to buy takeaway 12 times a month.
Instead we prefer to do Fakeaways at home.
Decide on a menu.
We have Indians, Chinese, pizza, burgers and even sometimes sushi. There are a million recipes online to give you some inspiration. Here are a few ideas we like to use.
If we are having pizza I get the kids to make their own. I buy the ready made pizza bases and then some toppings. They have great fun and always eat everything they cook themselves.
If we decide to have Chinese I go to Iceland. They have a great selection of Chinese food. We usually have fried rice, sweet & sour battered chicken, duck spring rolls and chicken chow mein.
If we decide to have an Indians it's usually the day after we have had a roast dinner. The left over chicken goes well with a couple of jars of sauce with added mushrooms and onions. We of course have to have naan bread and especially like the garlic and coriander mini naan bread's from Tesco, onion bhaji's and samosas.
Don't forget to set the Scene.
Turn your home into a restaurant for the night! Think of a name for your restaurant and get the kids to design and make a menu.
Ask your kids to lay the table with a table cloth, napkins and cutlery or chopsticks if you’re eating Chinese food!. Add a vase of flowers and play some suitable background music to tie in with your menu theme.
Dress for dinner either in your ‘best’ clothes or along a particular theme.
It's a great way to save some money and have a little bit of fun too.

love the iceland chinese fried rice , do a demon batch of bhajis and samosas each week, always buy the posh pizzas when theyre knocked way down in the supermarket dump bins and freeze them , biggest incentive to do it myself its 15 miles to the nearest takeaway ...living rurally is such fun
ReplyDeleteOhh I need a bigger freezer....Buying the post pizzas cheap is such a good idea x
Delete12 takeaways a month? That's CRAZY! We have one, maybe two maximum. We quite often have fakeaway nights - I love making doner kebabs using my slow cooker! Love the idea of setting the scene!
ReplyDeleteOhh. I really need to try making Doner Kebabs at home. We all love them :D
DeleteHi Kim, this is a great idea (I can't believe people spend so much on takeaways!). When the children were younger I did used to make them a McDonalds burger and chips, serving it on grease proof paper instead of in a box, they loved it!... But then they'd only been to a McDonalds once whilst on holiday.

It is madness isn't it....Homemade McDonalds is a great idea and so simple to make :D x
DeleteWe have takeaways only a couple of times a year, but we do eat out quite a lot - the joys of a foodie other half :)
ReplyDeleteWe do our own Afternoon Teas at home in the summer we make cake stands then bake and fill them up!
I think I may have to try making an afternoon tea...My girls would love it. We love cakes :D x
DeleteI have to say that I think that this is an utterly brilliant idea - we are always looking for ways to cheat the takeaway system! #PoCoLo
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea. We rarely have takeaways, and I miss the ritual. Doing something like this would be fun AND inexpensive.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea and name of a Fakeaway - I do like a takeaway every now and then but they are expensive and often leave you wanting as well. And it doesn't take much to shove a pizza in the oven or set the microwave does it - I'm off to think of a name for my very own Indian restaurant... :) Thanks so much for linking up to #PoCoLo x
ReplyDeleteAfter we discovered ASDA curries our local takeaway lost some income. I'll definitely try some of your other suggestions #PoCoLO
ReplyDeleteIceland Chinese and Indian foods are yummy! I hope to save more money this year, I know my girls would love making their own pizza
ReplyDeletewe do pitta pizzas which go down well and save a few pence
