A couple of weekends ago we went to Comic Con Mania in Hull. We had planned to go for just the day but decided to make a weekend of it and stay in Hull for the weekend. It was a lovely break but the highlight was of course Comic Con.
We have been to a Comic Con adventure in the past, one at Newcastle and we had a great time but the girls were younger and didn't really appreciate it, now they know everything about superheroes, Cosplay and everything anime!
We arrived at Connexin Live arena in Hull a little after the doors had opened at 11am and there was a long queue but it was moving fast. The Daleks kept everyone moving screeching "keep the line moving, don't stop and threatening to exterminate us if we did move too slowly". Eek! They actually scared me, I've seen too much of Doctor Who. lol
Walking in Becky's day was made when she saw a statue of Deadpool, her favourite superhero and of course had to have a sit in the Emperor's throne off Star Wars!
We lots count of the times that we said wow at various things throughout the day. The first wow moment came when we first walked in and saw Jimmy Vee who was R2-D2 in Star Wars. I'll admit I had no idea who he was until Stu told me. Oops. Apparently he plays a few different characters in Harry Potter too.
When we were walking around we saw so many people dressed up in Cosplay costumes. Ellie explained to me that Cosplay was just dressing up in costumes from films, TV shows, books or video games. There was a lot that I didn't recognise from Japanese anime's, I am sure Ellie got sick of telling me who everyone was but there was plenty that I recognised too! Minecraft characters, Marvel superheroes and of course plenty of characters from Doctor Who! During the day there was a Cosplay competition with everyone showing off their amazing costumes!
Stu and Ellie were very happy to see the Cobra Kai set, that is one of their favourite tv shows at the moment.
Later on in the afternoon we had a good look around the merchandise stands and we were in awe! There were stalls with Funko Pops, hundreds of them and some which I have never seen before. I would have loved the Buffy one from Buffy the Vampire Slayer but couldn't spend £150 on it. I did buy a John Cena one, him from the wrestling. He has announced his retirement so I am thinking in the future it will be worth more than the £10 that I paid.
We came across a stall selling artwork and what made it even better was the fact the guy was there actually painting, like he was proving that he did all the others too. He was so talented. He said that all the artwork on sale was painted by him, they were all original and not prints. You could tell from the smell of them, they smelled like paint.
I could have quite happily bought about 10 pieces and was torn between a couple. I ended up buying the Marvel one although I did really want to the Guardians of the Galaxy one too! Becky ended up buying a Deadpool one and the guy gave us them for £20 each instead of the £25 as he had seen us looking at them so much.
There was a band on, Lina and the Lions which was perfect for a Comic Con event. I can't describe their music, it's very 80's, synth-pop with a bit of alternative thrown in! They sounded amazing and sung some of their own songs and some popular one's like Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush.
We went back to the stalls and could have bought a hundred things. The framed postcards were really unique and I loved the stall with all the Doctor Who figures! Not the Weeping Angles though, the guy did laugh at me when Stu asked me if I wanted a weeping angle figure. The guy agreed they were creepy things. hehehe
Have you ever been to a Comic Con event?
On the subject of dressing up I don't know if you know of this blog http://kerenzaallin-garner.blogspot.com/ but this lady does Doctor Who's Assistants costumes and explains where she gets her clothes from to make the outfits. Very interesting.

Hope things are beginning to sort themselves out for you. I really enjoy your posts especially the Monday Menu as I can pinch ideas for my own menu.
I've never been to a Comic Con event, but this looks like it was a lot of fun! The artwork is amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt's been soooo long since I've been to a con... I've been to Collectormania in Milton Keynes a few times but that was quite some time ago now (half of The Lost Boys were there, a few of the Buffy/Angel crew, Torchwood, Firefly, and I'm sure there were others!)
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to a Comic Con before, but I was curious how they are. Thank you for sharing the pictures, it sounds fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat way to spend the weekend. I would have loved to see all the displays and art.

This looks amazing. I could spend so much money at one of these events! Glad you all had a fab time. xx
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this! I’m a huge fan of Comic Con but haven’t been to one in ages. It’s so easy to overspend at these events with all the amazing merchandise on offer. The cosplay is incredible too—I’d love to dress up myself, haha! My eldest once dressed up as Deadpool for a cosplay competition years ago, back when Deadpool wasn’t well-known. I hadn’t heard of him at the time and actually thought he was dressed up as Spiderman. LOL. He ended up winning a $100 voucher!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a lot of fun; those paintings are fabulous! I have never been to a Comic Con event before but know lots of friends that have.
