This week my Word of the Week is: Isolating! #WotW

This week my Word of the Week is:

Isolating WotW

What a week. I left you last week with the word Lockdown and now we're doubly locked down, self isolating until Thursday!

My dad came here to have a look at our boiler last Wednesday as it was playing up and we couldn't get it to stay on. He had a mask on, we didn't which I feel so stupid about now but it was one of those things you just don't think about. He had a cough but nothing different from what he usually has. He's 70 odd years old at his age health grumbles seem normal. By Wednesday evening he was feeling off. He started feeling worse over the next couple of days and by Friday evening was starting to show more of the main symptoms of Coronavirus. On Saturday we were convinced it was the dreaded virus but really hoped it wasn't. I ordered him a home test. There is going to be a whole different blog post about that. The tracking on the test said it had been delivered on Monday but didn't actually turn up until Tuesday afternoon, by then he had been to a drive through testing place.

The result came back on Wednesday, it was positive. It all became a little too real and very, very scary! Even though deep down we knew it was Coronavirus it was still a shock.

I got on the internet to see if we should self isolate and it was as clear as mud. Some sites say isolate if you've been in contact with someone who's tested positive, others say only if you've been contacted by test and trace. It was all a little confusing. So we rang the school to ask them their opinion. By the time the phone call had finished they were preparing to send Ellie home. I rang the college and asked their opinion and they thought it was best for Becky to come home too. Thankfully Stu had already been furloughed from work so in a way self isolating has came at the right time.

So here we are self isolating. No one apart from the school and college has told us to so far to self isolate but we thought it was for the best, just to be on the safe side, to keep others safe in case we do start with symptoms. The test and trace people have been in touch with my dad and he passed our names on but they haven't been in touch with us yet.

On Wednesday when my dad got his positive result his partner was on the phone to a friend and she said someone my dad had contact with tested positive a few days before my dad tested positive. So at least he has a fair idea where he caught it from.

So for now we're back to home schooling. I am sure Ellie thought she was getting a week off. It came as a bit of a shock to her yesterday when I had a list of work for her to do. The school have a whole section on her website set up for children learning at home. Becky was only in college one day a week so she'll only miss 1 day, next week. She can do the rest of the work at home.

My dad is doing OK. He is better than he was. He is feeling achy and has a sore throat but he's said that is down to all the coughing he's doing. He still feels weak and is hot one minute and cold the next but is drinking plenty and eating a little. He did get his sense of taste back on Wednesday night though so we're taking that as a good sign.

I'm worrying and I am being overprotective with the girls. Every little cough or if they say they're too hot or too cold I am questioning them. We're all OK though, showing no symptoms at all and I do hope it stays that way!

I managed to get a food shop delivery slot for today so we're not going to go without. I was panicking a little though. There was people we could ask to deliver us milk, bread and loo rolls but I didn't really want to ask. We're OK, don't worry!

How has your week been?

  2. Fingers crossed you all stay symptom free and your Dad is feeling better soon. I can't believe how bad the test, track and trace is in this Country. It's worked so well in other Countries and is a proven method of stopping the virus in it's tracks. We have such a poor system. I'm staying home for now, and the girls are being kept safe. It's just the Little Man. Just one case in his whole school so far and not his bubble. Fingers are tightly crossed here.
Take care and stay well xx

  3. That is close. I hope your Dad feels better soon. From all the commentary on the track and trace, I'm not sure what they do. Maybe they make the people, that don't know, a priority. Seems perfectly sensible that if you know you've been at risk, then isolate, without having to be told. Lucky that Stu is already off on furlough. One less thing to worry about. The school and college sound like they are on the ball too. I'm glad you have people near by who can come to your rescue in an emergency! Fingers crossed that you get through your 2 weeks without any symptoms. #wotw

  4. I'm so sorry to hear that your dad has Covid but glad that he seems to be doing okay and hope that he gets well soon, and that you all manage to avoid getting it. I can imagine it must be a very worrying time for you all. Sounds like you are all sorted with home-learning for Becky and Ellie and glad you managed to get a shopping delivery too x #WotW
