English Heritage summer events in the North....

Did you know that English Heritage cares for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites from world-famous prehistoric sites to grand medieval castles, from Roman forts on the edges of the empire to a Cold War bunkers. Through these they bring the story of England to life for over 10 million people each year.....


Over the summer they are hosting plenty of events throughout the North of England....You can watch outdoor theatre at an evening picnic in beautiful gardens, don Knight’s armour to a backdrop of dramatic castles or soak up the peace and mysterious history of impressive abbeys...

Warkworth CastleMedieval Season: Myths and Legends
Tuesday 1st & Wednesday 2nd August.

Enjoy our tales of myths and legends at Warkworth Castle in Northumberland. Meet our storytellers and hear all about some of England's greatest mythical characters. Then become one yourself in our sword school!

Aydon CastleMedieval Life
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th August.

Step back in time and experience Medieval life in all its glory at Aydon Castle in Northumberland as the rooms of the manor house are brought back to life for a weekend of Living history.

Scarborough CastleRoman Scarborough
Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th August

March up to Scarborough Castle this weekend and prepare your charges to experience the most popular sport in roman times - chariot racing. Your little Roman soldiers can have a go at becoming a mighty horse in our chariot racing, who will win the race and rule the Castle? Experience Roman life, witness cavalry demonstrations and fascinating displays of falconry.

Belsay Hall, Castle & GardensOutdoor Theatre: Jane Eyre
Tuesday 8th August.

Doors open at 6.15pm, performance starts at 7pm. Young governess Jane Eyre arrives at the mysterious Thornfield Hall deep in the Yorkshire moors and meets enigmatic Mr Rochester. So begins this most unforgettable of love stories. When a secret from the past returns to haunt them, can Jane and Rochester’s passion survive the forces that might tear them apart forever? Adapted from Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents one of the greatest romances of English literature.

Tuesday 8th - Thursday 10th August.

Thrill to the clash of steel as knights perform a medieval Tournament at Warkworth Castle in Northumberland. Enjoy this living history spectacular and marvel at the weapons and martial skills on display.

Mount Grace PrioryOutdoor Theatre: Great Expectations
Friday 11th August.

Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents Charles Dickens’ unforgettable story of love, family and friendship set in the depths of Victorian England. From the haunting marshlands of Kent to the bustling streets of Victorian London, this epic tale follows the fortunes of a young Pip as he falls in love, finds his fortune and makes his way in the world. This beautiful romantic tale is brought to life with traditional music, full period costume and a whole host of colourful characters, from the dangerous convict Magwitch to the elusive Estelle and of course, the eccentric and mysterious Miss Havisham.

Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th August.

Thrill to the clash of steel as knights perform a medieval Tournament at Tynemouth Priory & Castle this weekend. Enjoy this living history spectacular, marvel at the weapons and martial skills on display and enjoy performances of merry music from our minstrels. Little knights can even get involved in sword drill sessions.

Helmsley CastleHelmsley under Siege!
Saturday 12th - Sunday 13th August.

Muskets and cannon roar, swords clash and drums beat, as the forces of Parliament attempt to wrest control of mighty Helmsley Castle from the determined Royalist Garrison. Experience the action as it unfolds during the day, and visit the troops of both sides as they prepare for the coming assaults.

Tuesday 15th & Wednesday 16th August.

Cheer on our fighting knights at Warkworth Castle in this summer as two highly trained knights take to the arena for spectacular displays of combat. You can meet them throughout the day to find out more about their arms, armour and training.

Tynemouth Priory Outdoor Theatre: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Thursday 17th August.

Chapterhouse Theatre Company presents Shakespeare’s best-loved romantic comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream at Tynemouth Priory & Castle. Let yourself be whisked away on a thrilling journey to the most magical of forests and meet star-crossed lovers, playful fairies and hilarious travelling players. Beautifully designed Elizabethan costumes, a wonderful musical score and enchanting woodland creatures come together to make this an evening of un-missable summer garden theatre.

Roll up, Roll up, the circus is in town! This summer we're pitching a Big Top at the Abbey. Step inside and enjoy the curiosities of a travelling show and marvel at the skills of circus performers, in this amazing setting.

Saturday 19th August.

Rain or Shine bring Shakespeare’s cross-gartered and hilarious cross-dressing comedy, Twelfth Night to Mount Grace Priory. In the fantastical Kingdom of Illyria, the peace of a grieving Countess and a heartsick Duke is disturbed by a pair of shipwrecked lovers. & the course of true love never did run smoothly in this, the most loved of Shakespeare's comic plays.

Richmond CastleMedieval Mayhem
Saturday 19th August & Sunday 20th August.

Cheer on performers Dressed to Kill Knights, fighting knights and duelling warriors, as they perform in a combat display. Join us for medieval mayhem, experience living history, duelling displays, test your skills at have-a- go-archery and get involved in interactive plays.

Chesters Roman FortReturn of the Romans
Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th August.

Enjoy two days of spectacular military displays, take in the sights, sounds and smells of a living camp and be part of the action as the mighty Romans return to the Wall for this two day event.

Scarborough Castle - Scarborough at War.
Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th August.

Remember Scarborough! Discover history from both World Wars at Scarborough Castle this weekend. Learn about the 1914 bombardment of the castle and experience living history in our WWI and WWII zone. Children will be able to take part in interactive activities.

With the bumptious Toad’s heart set on a shiny new motorcar and his very liberty soon at stake, will his faithful friends come to his rescue – and will he let them? Alive with music and song, this magical family show is presented in beautiful traditional costume and features a woodland parade during the interval for everyone to join in with!

Take a step back in time with Chapterhouse Theatre  Company to meet Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Austen's most loveable heroine. When Elizabeth meets the rude and abrupt Mr Darcy, she loathes him at first sight. But is there more to him than meets the eye? Brought to life by award winning writer Laura Tuner, this brand-new adaptation celebrates the 200th Anniversary of Jane Austen’s death and promises to be the most splendid evening of the summer.

Saturday 26th until Bank holiday Monday.

This August Bank Holiday at Belsay Hall Castle & Gardens in Northumberland you will feel the heat of this fiery contest as rival knights show their prowess at archery and lordsmanship. Brandishing blades and bows they'll face each other in a test of strength and skill. Explore the medieval encampment guided by the smell of fire-cooked food and the sound of merry music. Let the little ones show off their bravery with knight's battle drills out on the field.

Warkworth CastleMedieval Season: Falconry
Wednesday 30th - Thursday 31st August.

Join our costumed master medieval falconers, Raphael Falconry at Warkworth Castle in Northumberland and be wowed by demonstrations of the Sport of Kings. Witness spectacular aerial displays of birds of prey in flight and discover how these birds were used by the nobles of the Medieval period for sport and for the table. You can also meet our medieval Lord Chamberlain and decide whether Kings of the time were ‘Good, Bad or Sad’ in interactive family shows.

  2. Had some great days out at similar events over the years and great for the school holidays. I just wish you did not have both National Trust and English Heritage memberships to pay for to take full advantage of the country's treasures
