Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning....

I always remember as a child when I we saw a red sky my dad would say "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning". It's an old weather saying often used at sunrise and sunset to signify the changing sky and was originally known to help the shepherds prepare for the next day's weather.

What has stuck in my mind is what my grandad used to say. "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's house is on fire". hehehe When I was really little I did worry about all those poor shepherd's and their houses being on fire.

  1. Beautiful sunset. Was this Friday? We had a stunning sunset on Friday. I always say the red sky at night rhyme too, although I've never heard of the shepherd's house being on fire!

  2. Exactly what I remember my uncle would say and I have carried on the family tradition (not the house being on fire bit though!). it's also a very accurate way to gauge the weatehr I find! Great shot though, that is a glorious sunset.

  3. My father had been a sailor when young and always said sailor instead of shepbher - said idea though. Lovely photos today. #mysundayphoto

  9. I think we missed out on the spectacular sunsets the rest of the country were having last week. Your second version of the rhyme made me giggle. I often say the first one, but never heard of the second. #mmbc

  10. Yes, I always heard sailor too, but we grew up on the Great Lakes. I was surprised to find that this came from the Bible. I'm Matthew it says neither sailor or shepherd, though.
