How to make traditional mulled wine! - Recipe!

There’s nothing quite like a warm, spiced drink to bring a touch of cosiness and cheer to the season and mulled wine is a classic choice! Every year I think about making Mulled wine but never get around to it but this year is the year that I will! I tried some the other week, it was at a Christmas market so I was probably wrapped up in the Christmas spirit but it tasted so nice. It was like a warm hug in a cup!

Mulled wine

Mulled wine, or “glühwein” as it’s known in Germany, is a festive favourite across the UK. It’s essentially red wine that’s been heated with a medley of spices and citrus. Mulled wine is perfect for holiday gatherings or a cosy night in. It’s easy to make ahead of time and just reheat when needed. Here’s how you can make it:

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine (A fruity variety like Merlot or Pinot Noir works well).
1 orange, sliced.
1 lemon, sliced.
2 or 3 cinnamon sticks.
4 or 5 cloves.
3 star anise.
2-4 tablespoons of honey or sugar (adjust to taste).
Optional: 1/4 cup of brandy for an extra kick.

Instructions:

Combine the Ingredients: In a large saucepan, pour in the red wine. Add the orange and lemon slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise and honey (or sugar).

Heat Gently: Warm the mixture over low heat. Do not let it boil. You want to gently heat it to allow the flavours to meld together. This should take about 20 or 30 minutes.

Taste and Adjust: Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness if needed. If you’re using brandy stir it in just before serving.

Strain and Serve: Remove the spices and fruit slices using a strainer. Serve the mulled wine hot in mugs or heatproof glasses and enjoy!

  1. I love mulled wine and I sometimes make it at home. I used a ready made mix before, from the supermaket to flavour the drink, but it is better to make it from scratch and using the spices I like. Your recipe sounds really lovely.
