Share Our Lives - Finding peace in your day!

This months Share Our Lives linky prompt is: Finding peace in your day came at a really good time, I wrote this last month when I was still feeling pretty stressed and anxious about things which had happened at the end of July. As a family we went through a pretty rough time of it, none of it caused by us but we have had to deal with the aftermath like not feeling safe in our home and not feeling safe outside of our home either. Things are slightly better now but only because I have had to find new routines and rituals to keep me calm, busy and distracted. A lot has changed with my daily routine and this is some of which I have been doing:

In the morning!
I have been getting up earlier. Usually at this time of year I would be sleeping until about 10am with it being the school holidays but I have been up most mornings at about 8am at the latest. I have taken a leaf out of Jennifer's book and I have been making my bed each morning. There is a lot I haven't felt in control of but making my bed makes me feel in control and happy. Who'd have thought it? Stu has usually already left for work so I come downstairs and just potter about doing my own thing. Usually my day would have started with a coffee but that seemed to make me feel jittery so I have been opting for juice of some sort. With the weather we've been having I have been glad of something cool to drink and I have gone outside most mornings and drank it in the garden.

Housework!
It's crazy to think that the every day things have made me feel calm. Simple things like standing at the sink, looking out onto the garden washing the dishes has made me feel like life is normal. There was a couple of weeks where we didn't eat properly and the meal planning went out of the window. Being back in control and planning what we eat has made me happy. Putting the washing out on the line and watering my plants on an evening are two more jobs which have brought me great joy, especially since my plants are doing so well after I had a short time of not really looking after them at all.

Eating lunch!
I went around 2 weeks without eating properly but I have made a point of eating a better lunch. It might still be sandwiches most days but it's not just plain ham sandwiches, sometimes there is salad, mustard, beetroot and some days I even push the boat out and hard boil some eggs and have them.

Mindful moments!
Throughout my day I am finding moments to practice some mindfulness. Deep breathing exercises, using the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 method. Thinking of 5 things I can see, 4 things I can touch, 3 things I can hear, 2 things that I can smell and something that I can taste and of course I am still writing down things that I am grateful for.

Getting outside more!
I know staying inside was not doing my mental health any good but it was hard to go outside. I spent almost a month in the house not really leaving without Stu, it was no way to carry on but over the last few weeks I have been venturing out more. Even just walking to the shop felt like a challenge but I am getting there and I'm feeling better about things.

Not scrolling social media!
I have stopped scrolling on social media so much, yes I will still mindlessly scroll on TikTok but that is different. hehehe I stepped back from social media a little when I had a little break from blogging and now only go on when I have a reason to. I seem to have moved away from using Twitter as much and stepped back into Instagram and Facebook. It just seems nicer on those at the moment.

An early bedtime!
I have been going to bed at the latest at about 10pm. I feel so much better for the early nights, some nights I haven't been sleeping properly but with going to bed earlier I am not feeling the lack of sleep as much.

How do you find peace in your day?

  1. I hope things are a bit better for you. There is nothing like getting into a made bed, with nice smooth sheets. Impressed that you are sometimes able to sleep till 10am! I wake up naturally at about 6am.

  2. I love getting up early and as soon as my husband leaves in the morning I spend a bit of time making sure everything is cleaned up and straightened up and our bed is made, etc. I find mornings tend to be my quietest time of the day since I don't listen to music or audiobooks (usually one of the boys is still sleeping so I try to be quiet).

  10. I'm sorry that you've had a rough go lately, but am so glad to hear that things are settling down for you and you're finding pleasant and peaceful routines to help. Many of the little things you mentioned - making the bed, hanging out laundry - are things I was surprised to find that I truly enjoyed and made me feel happier. Having a laundry line is something I miss terribly and am hoping to have in our next home! Have a happy and peaceful week!

  12. Mindful moments - what a great idea! I try to get to bed early during the week but then I find that I stay up too late on the weekends just watching tv, etc.
