Not a teenager anymore.

Becky, my eldest is 20 years old today. How did that happen! It's a cliche but it doesn't seem 5 minutes since she was born. Becky has had such a big year with plenty going on and the way she has handled things has made me so proud of her!

Where do I start with the year Becky has had. I think the biggest thing to happen which has effected all aspects of her life is splitting up with her girlfriend. They had been together for over 2 and a half years and thankfully Becky wasn't heartbroken, sobbing into her pillow due to the circumstances of their breakup, she in fact thinks she had a lucky escape and felt more pity and anger than upset. Becky has been so mature about the breakup and did a lot to keep the peace. She was a lot nicer and calmer in the situation than I would have been.

Due to her breaking up with her girlfriend Becky has had more time to do what she wants to do and spend time with her other friends and over the last few months there has been times where I have gone to wake her up on a morning and she's already out meeting up for breakfast. lol She has a couple of good friends who I've met and they are lovely.

It's been almost a year since Becky has been working in the care home and she loves it. Some people look down on those working in care but Becky doesn't give 2 stuffs! She works three or four 12 hour shifts a week and comes out with more than enough money to pay me board, put some in her savings and have plenty to spend on herself. She enjoys the job and much prefers working nights than day shifts but she will take any shift. She did have a month where she didn't have many shifts to do as the care home was amazingly overstaffed but staff have left, people have been taking holidays and of course people have been off sick. They all needed shifts covering. Things seem pretty much back to normal now and she's worked more over the last month than ever.

Working at the care home worked well around Becky being at college studying health and social care but that came to an end in June after 3 years. She loved being at college but is much preferring working. When she was at college she had less time to herself because during the week she was either at college or at work, now she has those days to herself when she did used to be at college. The advantage is now that she doesn't work every Friday night, not that much happens on a Friday night but it means she can do something with friends.

What Becky does like to do is go to the pub to play pool. She is not bothered about the alcohol but will have a pint. She is just there for the pool. Earlier on in the summer she was dragging me along with her when the pub had free pool on a Tuesday. It was nice to spend some time with her.

The only gripe I have about Becky is that she seems to have more money than she knows what to do with. It's got to the point now where half of her wages are going into her savings and what's left she spends on rubbish! Well rubbish in my eyes, things that she has seen on TikTok. Floating balls, bubble guns, slippers and cheese graters. I suppose it's better than her spending her money on drugs, drink or gambling.

So as of writing this I don't know what we're doing for Becky's birthday. I think we're going to go out for a meal at lunch and then maybe get Subway or something a bit lighter for tea, there will of course be birthday cake.

  2. Happy birthday to Becky. Sorry to hear that she's split with her girlfriend, but it's good that she'd handled it well. I admire people who work in caring roles - especially yougnesters, good for her. I know what you mean about blowing wages and at least it's not drugs etc.

  4. Happy birthday to Becky she sounds like a wonderful young lady. I totally agree that time just goes so fast and they are all grown up before we know it! It's great that she is saving some of her money. I think when kids first start earning their own money they are so excited that they can afford to buy things so they do! I have boxes and boxes of Pokemon cards and Magic The Gathering cards from my oldest son. He moved out and doesn't want them anymore. I shudder to think how much money he wasted on them and I can't bring myself to throw them out!

  7. I know just what you mean about too much pocket money! LOL. I shake my head a lot of time over seeing what Ian buys with his extra funds but like you said; it could be a lot worse!
