My Grandparents. #MySundayPhoto

Did you know it's Grandparents Day today? It is celebrated to show the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. I don't have any living grandparents now but do have fond memories of one of them.

My mother fell out with her parents before I was born but did stay in touch with her grandmother, my nan but the person I was closest to was my Granda, my dad's dad. He lived with us from before I was born, after his wife died, my grandmother. I have only heard stories about her but I do have plenty of photos.

My grandad was like another parent to my brother and I.
He would look us until my parents got in from work as they had a milk round and delivered milk early on a morning. I remember the perfect soft boiled eggs he used to make and the endless cups of milky coffee we used to drink. He would take me to McDonalds, for ice cream and grew amazing tomatoes in his greenhouse in the back garden, he taught me to play Cribbage, ride a bike, play solitaire and told me all about the war.

It's a shame there are not more photos of him. When I was a baby my dad had a decent camera and developed his own photos so there are plenty from when I was a baby but not many in the later years of my granda's life.

When I was about 12 my grandad began to change. He started to forget things and get confused, it was the start of Alzheimer's. On the day of my first GCSE mock exam when I was about 15 he got rushed into hospital and he never came home. He passed away just over a year later.

  8. You are blessed to have such wonderful memories of your Granddad. I only remember my grandfather's funeral when I was a pre-schooler. It was my first funeral and I didn't really understand why people were crying. #MMBC

  9. Beautiful photos and memories. Your Grandad sounds wonderful. My Grampy came to live with us too after my Nanny died. I love that your Dad had a good camera and developed his photos himself. I only ever did that at school but always imagined I'd have my own dark room in the bathroom one day lol. Instead I have a phone and digital camera haha. Alzheimer's is a cruel disease. My Grampy died (of cancer) while I was doing my GCSE's too. I feel like I was a bit of a sulky teen when he died and wish I'd got to talk to him during my adult years to show my appreciation more. Lots of love to you. xxx

  10. It is a blessing when kids can have positive relationships with their grandparents because they are often able to understand each other in different ways then parents and children and it just gives kids another level of support and in my case I was there when my grandmother needed me as we'd built that support for each other over the years. It can be an amazing bond when it works.
