This week my Word of the Week is: College!! #WotW

This week my Word of the Week is:

College

What a week we've had since I left you with my last Word of the Week: Holiday! We had a great break away in Newcastle, then visiting my friend and then seeing Stu's family at a wedding. We got to do everything that we wanted and more which I will be blogging about next week, well starting too as I have so much to share.

The other big thing that happened this week was that Ellie started college. She is going to spend at least the next two years doing electrical engineering.

We came back home from our break away on Sunday tea-time and then Ellie had a few hours to get all her things together for college and we all had an early night. We were worn out so were worried about being up at 7am on the Monday morning. Ellie now has to leave for the bus at the same time that she would have been getting out of bed for school so it has been a big change.

I was more nervous than Ellie on her first day. I think I was worried about her catching the bus, she had never got a bus by herself but it turns out I needn't have worried at all. There was a girl at the bus stop that she knew who is in her 3rd year of college who made sure Ellie got the bus OK, into college and the bus home. Bless her.

On Ellie's first day of college it was all about learning their way around, being told the rules, meeting the teachers, getting their full time tables, being fitted for overalls and boots and meeting people in her class. Ellie is in a minority with electrical engineering as the majority of the other students are boys. There is only one other girl on her course, there was supposed to be a couple more but they didn't turn up. Ellie of course made friends with the other girl and they have been together since Monday. She has made other friends, of course a lot of the boys are loud and annoying but she's not by herself and that makes me happy.

Lunch times have been a bit hit and miss. Ellie and her new friend chickened out of going to the canteen on Monday and got something from the shop nearby, on Tuesday they went to the canteen but they both forgot to use their student ID to pay for lunch and used their bank cards and finally on Wednesday they got the hang of things and used their student allowance to pay for lunch. Hooray! I told her to make the most of it as she gets £5 per day to spend on food and drink, when Becky was there a couple of years ago it wasn't much more than £3.

Ellie started her proper lessons on Tuesday and is loving it so far. They have been learning the basics about trades like Plumbers, Carpenters, Bricklayers and of course Electricians. Ellie realised she didn't know what a carpenter was. lol She thought it was just a joiner who worked with wood, she didn't realise they were near enough the same thing. Sometime over the next couple of weeks they are going to learn how to climb ladders, one's of all different sizes and how to safely secure them. This did make me chuckle but I suppose it's something an electrician needs to know.

A couple of years ago I blogged about how Ellie had changed and had levelled up and she seems to have done it again over this past week. She seems that little bit more mature, a little to much for my liking at the moment. She has started wearing make up each day which I don't think is needed and every day seems to be a fashion show, picking the perfect outfit. I am sure it's just the novelty of starting college and I am sure that she won't be so eager to get out of bed in the winter and put make up on but I am so pleased with her. She's even started eating a proper breakfast which she needs since she's out of the house before 8am and doesn't get home until almost 5pm.

How has your week been? I hope you have had a good one!

  1. It's so good to hear that Ellie had a great first week at college. She seems to be confidently getting used to all the new things. It's an exciting time for her but I understand how nervous you felt. I'm the same! My oldest son wasn't as confident as my younger son is now at the same age. He had never gotten public transport by himself when he started uni. So I did the whole trip with him before his first day at uni. He had to catch two trains and a bus and I was a nervous wreck the first month or two! Anyway, I hope all continues to go well for Ellie and that she makes nice friends and keeps enjoying her classes xx

  2. Your posts are so interesting to read and I always learn something new about your family. Sounds like you've had a lovely time away and I am excited for Ellie and her course. Thank God that one girl showed up. Encourage them to do their best and to outshine the boys while they focus on being rowdy lol. Have a great week ahead.

  3. OH it sounds like her year is off to a fabulous start! I was just thinking today that my son has been up on his own every single day of school so far.... and that can't last all year. LOL.

  4. You go Ellie! I imagine it's a big change and she seems to be coping brilliantly. My son starts college on Monday, but I'll be taking him as it's next door to Madam's school. Karen Early Rising Mum

  5. Wow, our babies are at college!! I'm so glad Ellie had a good first week, she sounds just like Boo, I wonder if the excitement will wane, lol. Boo doesn't need to get the bus to college (it's actually closer to us than her school was and she can walk there in less than five minutes.) But they give all the students a bus pass and she was off out with her new friends on the second day, catching the bus and going to a cafe! She was gone for hours but kept texting me, she even sent me a photo of her drink, bless her!

  6. I'm so glad Ellie had a great first week. The course I picked was male dominated at college too. It wouldn't be now but there were only three other girls in my classes. It sounds like she is doing well getting there and back. I think I actually stopped wearing make-up in college after wearing it in school everyday #WotW

  7. Glad Ellie is enjoying college and has made friends with the other girl on her course. I had a similar experience doing Physics A level – there were only three girls and the rest were boys. Learning to climb ladders safely is a good skill to be taught. It sounds like Ellie is settling in really well. Hope that she continues to enjoy college. #WotW
