The one I love. The other man in my life! #Blogtober20

I am taking part in Blogtober20 throughout October and today's prompt is "The one I love".

For this one I could easily write about my fella but I thought I would go with writing about the other man in my life, my dad as I have been mentioning him more and more over the last 15 months or so since we moved house to be nearer to him.

I didn't have much of a relationship with my dad until I turned about 10 years old. He was always working. He was a milkman, delivering milk on a morning and then running his skip hire business during the day and on an evening he was always busy on the farm building the house we lived in. When I was about 10 years old I started going out collecting the milk money and in the skip wagons with him and we became much closer.

What brought us even closer was my mother leaving which sounds heartless but she did some awful things. He was devastated and since then we have grown closer day by day.

I moved a couple of hours from my dad to move in with Stu when Becky was about 4 years old and then he moved to Scunthorpe even further away. For the last 13 years or so we would only see my dad a couple of times a year at the most and only for a few hours at a time. We did speak on the phone nearly every day which was nice but not as nice as seeing him nearly every day. A few years ago we went away for Christmas with my dad and his partner and that made it clear to Stu and I that we needed to spend more time with him while we could. That was one of the main reasons that we moved house.

My dad is getting on in age but you wouldn't think it the way he goes on. He's 72 but sometimes thinks he's a lot younger which isn't always a good thing. He often works too hard and takes too much on and thankfully things have always worked out OK.

Over the past 15 months the girls have got to know my dad, their grandad and they love him just like he loves them. They think he is hilarious, he is a massive joker and I have seen the girls just about in tears laughing at his antics. They love going to his house. He always has them doing different things. Picking cherries and fruit off his trees, painting, helping with the gardening and driving his tractor. He spoils them rotten but would never admit it. He always gives them cans of pop and proper Cornetto ice creams instead of the cheap Tesco own one's I get.

It was hard at the start of lockdown not seeing my dad. It felt like we were being robbed of time together but at the same time I was glad he was staying at home and staying safe. He is never a one to follow rules so I was glad when he did.

I have recently been helping him out with his business and the things he needs to do on the computer. Sending emails and paying bills. He is finally getting the hang of using a computer with my help and was so proud when he scanned something himself and attached it to an email. hehehe Between Stu and I we have even got him using spreadsheets to do his accounts, he was using paper and writing everything down.

I feel so lucky that I am getting this time with my dad and so, so lucky that the girls are getting to know their grandad.

  6. Aww this post made me grin so much my cheeks hurt, and also made my eyes leak. He sounds like an amazing man. I was super close to my Dad too. He passed away when he was 54 & I was 23. My biggest regret in life is that he never got to meet his grandkids. So it's amazing that you moved back to be closer to him. #Blogtober

  9. What a lovely post, he sounds wonderful, my parents only live a short distance from us, the children and I used to have a really close relationship with my dad, but ever since my sister had her daughter two weeks, after our youngest, we barely see my parents as they spend all their time with her. I know what you mean about not acting their age though, mines 75 and you wouldn't think it.
