Girls Just Want to Have Fun! #Blogtober20

I am taking part in Blogtober20 throughout October and today's prompt is "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

A few years ago my house used to be over run with toys but my girls are at an age now where they don't really play with toys. Days of Barbie dolls, cars and pretend play toys are long gone. Ellie will still play with building toys like K'nex, Lego and the Geomag set she got for her birthday but now it's all about screens and electronics.

For them fun is all about playing games on computers, their tablets and the xbox. At the moment their biggest obsession is Fortnite.

Becky got an xbox one at Christmas for the sole reason of playing the game Fortnite. In case you didn't know Fortnite is an online survival game where 100 players fight against each other in player versus player combat to be the last one standing. At least 350 million players across the globe play it.

Fortnite

Becky is obsessed. They have seasons and every few months it changes theme. We've seen secret agents, Deadpool, the Fortnite world flooded with the arrival of Aquaman and now it's onto Marvel.

It has given the girls the incentive to help around the house. I've said if they help I will buy them v-bucks, the currency used in Fortnite. It's a fair swap. I get the help and they get to buy new outfits, dances and other things.

One day Ellie's friend was here and she had a go playing on our xbox which got her interested in it. She had played it on her tablet in the past but not an xbox. She soon got an xbox and started playing too which of course meant Ellie wanted to play it. She will only play it on her PC though. Becky's girlfriend had no interest in playing Fortnite until she played it and now she loves it too.

Becky, Ellie and Ellie's friend sometimes play in teams where they fight against other teams. I've said I am tempted to buy them headphones with microphones on so they're not shouting between rooms here and Ellie's friend can hear when she's at her house.

Even Stu has started playing and the girls will sometimes tell him to log into their account to level them up. lol He is soft so instead of working on his account he's working on theirs.

The only person who doesn't play it is me. I did try one night to play it on the xbox and had Becky and Stu shouting random instructions at me and I just couldn't get the hang of it. Fortnite is definitely not a game for me.

I will stick to playing The Sims 4. Ellie's 2nd favourite game is The Sims, she loves to play on it but never actually plays. She just loves to build the biggest and best houses which she is really good at. Becky is the one all about Fortnite. Now that she has her laptop she has the choice where to play. If she's not on the xbox, she's playing on the laptop.

What do your kids do for fun?

  1. My youngest son spends hours and hours playing on the computer. He used to be such a creative kid - building things and drawing - and now he has no time for that. I have really started to hate the computer :( #MMBC

  2. I no longer play games on my computer except solitaire and have no XBox - alas I am from generations past. I played online games back 10 to 12 years ago and then stopped - it had become addictive and I was wasting all my time on games. Sounds like everyone in your home is having fun. Enjoy. #MMBC

  4. I'm so glad your girls love to play Fortnite. I have never played it and don't think it's accessible with my screen reader. I am mostly into word games on my phone.

  5. My lot never really got into Fortnite. The Little Man still loves Minecraft but the girls are pretty diverse. Star is currently working her way through Tales of Xillia which is so old we had to get the PS3 out for her to play it! We all love Fall Guy which is fun but together we play Jackbox TV or our latest favourite is Among Us because we can all play together on our phones or tablets. And of course, Mario and Luigi have been in our homes for over 30 years now!!

  7. I've just had a little look and it seems you can make your own games within Fortnite. Ooo! But I already have loads of hobbies such as sewing and music that take up a lot of my time (and money!) Hmm... I also want to learn how to draw. Hm! I used to love Tombraider 1, back in 2000.

  9. I’m in my 20s and people my age still play this game. It looks like fun, although I don’t play it as much.
